The solvolysis in D2O/CD3SOCD3 of the 2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-1,2-benzazaphosphole 2-oxides (5a-c), the analogous 2-methyl derivatives (6a-c), and of the 2-methyl-2,3-dihydro-lH-1,2-benzaza-phosphole 2-sulfides (6d) and (6e) was examined semi-quantitatively by n.m.r. spectroscopy. 1-Methyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1 H-1,2-benzazaphosphole 2-oxide (5b) was subjected to reductive ring-opening reactions, base-catalysed C3-alkylation, and base-catalysed formation of a 3-benzylidene derivative.
