Abstract The Korean poultry industry produces more than 4,000 tons of hatchery by-products (HBPs) every year. There is an increasing interest in the use of HBPs as a feed ingredient in The Korean feed industry. However, limited information regarding nutritional values for HBPs has been available. Thus, we conducted an experiment to measure apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AAs) in 4 different HBPs for broiler chickens. Four HBPs included infertile eggs (IFE), unhatched eggs (UHE), low grade and dead chicks (LDC), and mixture (MIX) containing 55% IFE, 10% UHE, 10% LDC, and 25% hatched eggshells. A total of three-hundred-thirty-six 21-d-old Ross 308 broiler chickens were randomly allotted to 1 of 4 dietary treatments with 7 replicates per treatment. Each diet contained individual HBP as a sole source of AAs. Additional 125 birds were used to estimate ileal endogenous losses of AAs. Results indicated that the AID and SID of 5 essential AAs (Arg, Met, Trp, His, and Val) for LDC were greatest (P < 0.05), but those (Arg, Met, and Trp) for MIX were the least (P < 0.05) among 4 HBPs. The AID and SID of most AAs in IFE were comparable to those in UHE. However, the AID and SID of 3 essential AAs (Lys, Leu, and Phe) were not different among 4 HBPs. The average AID and SID of both essential and nonessential AAs (18 AAs) for LDC were greatest (P < 0.05), but those for MIX were the least (P < 0.05) among 4 HBPs. In conclusion, HBPs used in this experiment contain high amounts of digestible AAs, which are comparable to other animal by-products. Generally, AAs in LDC are more digestible than AAs in other 3 HBPs (UHE, IFE, and MIX).


Pebbles are commonly used parameters for the determination of finite strain in deformed rocks. In high grade metamorphic environments, rocks probably behave as viscous fluids and a theory exists which relates the deformation experienced by a pebble to that of the host rocks. However, some deformed conglomerates are found in low grade metamorphic rocks where the assumption of viscous behaviour is unrealistic The deformation of artificial conglomerates made of geological materials, at room temperature and varying confining pressure is described. In these experiments, pebbles deform by cataclasis at surprisingly low applied loads and large finite strains are achieved. The amount of deformation experienced by pebbles of different rock types depends mainly on their yield strengths and ductility contrasts with respect to the matrix. A theoretical analysis assuming that pebble and matrix behave as workhardening Bingham materials during deformation relates the strain experienced by a pebble to that of the host rock. The results suggest that significant pebble deformation can occur during gravitational loading of sediments. An attempt is made to verify this idea by analysing the shape of pebbles in conglomerates of the Upper Witwatersrand System. At some sites the pebbles appear to have deformed during gravitational compaction while at others a tectonic deformation has been superimposed upon the pre-tectomic strain.

Epithelial ovarian tumors are a group of morphologically and genetically heterogeneous neoplasms. Based on differences in clinical phenotype and genetic background, ovarian neoplasms are classified as low-grade and high-grade tumor. Borderline ovarian tumors represent approximately 10%–20% of all epithelial ovarian masses. Various histological subtypes of ovarian malignancies differ in terms of their risk factor profiles, precursor lesions, clinical course, patterns of spread, molecular genetics, response to conventional chemotherapy, and prognosis. The most frequent genetic aberrations found in low-grade serous ovarian carcinomas and serous borderline tumors, as well as in mucinous cancers, are mutations in BRAF and KRAS genes. The most commonly observed BRAF mutation is substitution of glutamic acid for valine in codon 600 (V600E) in exon 15. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether fully integrated, real-time polymerase chain reaction–based Idylla™ system may be useful in determination of BRAF gene mutation status in codon 600 in patients with borderline ovarian tumors and low-grade ovarian carcinomas. The study included tissue specimens from 42 patients with histopathologically verified ovarian masses, who were operated on at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Nicolaus Copernicus University Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz (Poland). Based on histopathological examination of surgical specimens, 35 lesions were classified as low-grade ovarian carcinomas, and 7 as borderline ovarian tumors. Specimens with expression of BRAF V600E (VE1) protein were tested for mutations in codon 600 of the BRAF gene, using an automated molecular diagnostics platform Idylla™. Cytoplasmic immunoexpression of BRAF V600E (VE1) protein was found in three specimens: serous superficial papilloma, serous papillary cystadenoma of borderline malignancy, and partially proliferative serous cystadenoma. All specimens with the expression of BRAF V600E (VE1) protein were tested positively for BRAF V600E/E2/D mutation. No statistically significant relationship (p > 0.05) was found between the presence of BRAF V600E mutation and the probability of 5-year survival. BRAF mutation testing with a rapid, fully integrated molecular diagnostics system Idylla™ may be also a powerful prognostic tool in subjects with newly diagnosed serous borderline tumors, identifying a subset of patients who are unlikely to progress.
