The preparation of a series of new coordination compounds of bivalent nickel with the terdentate ligand 2,4,8-tri(2?-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine and various anions (Cl-, Br-, I-, CNS-, or ClO-4) is reported. Compounds having metal-ligand ratios of 1 : 2, 1 : 1, and 2 : 1 were isolated, and in the last case the possibility of simultaneous terdentate and bidentate behaviour is discussed. In all cases the compounds formed were high-spin with magnetic moments ranging between 3.1 and 3.3 B.M. In general, octahedral coordination is proposed for these compounds. The additional possibility of five-coordination in the case of the 1 : 1 complexes is discussed, but such coordination could not be confirmed by the investigations employed. The isolation of a series of coordination compounds containing a protonated form of the ligand is also reported.

Two thiacalix[4]arene-based coordination compounds, a {Co24} octahedral coordination cage and a {Co8} cluster, are effective adsorbents towards Hg(ii) and the adsorption capacity of the {Co24} cage compound reaches 330 mg g−1.
