Abstract The main driving idea of the present study was the comparison between two different chemical modifications of hyaluronic acid (HA) followed by the development of nanocomposite hydrogels directly in situ by biomineralization of photocrosslinkable HA polymers through sol-gel synthesis. In this way, it has been possible to overcome some limitations due to classical approaches based on the physical blending of inorganic fillers into polymer matrix. To this aim, methacrylated and maleated HA, synthesized with similar degree of substitution (DS) were compared in terms of mechanical and physico-chemical properties. The success of in situ biomineralization was highlighted by reflect Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Furthermore, mechanical characterization demonstrated the reinforcing effect of inorganic fillers evidencing a strong correlation with DS. The swelling behavior resulted to be correlated with filler concentration. Finally, the cytotoxicity tests revealed the absence of toxic components and an increase of cell proliferation over culture time was observed, highlighting these bio-nanocomposite hyaluronan derivatives as biocompatible hydrogel with tunable properties.

ABSTRACTA comparison of the use of three different coordination compounds of copper as precursors for the sol-gel synthesis of YBa2Cu3O7-δ has been made. For yttrium, the tris(isopropoxide) was used exclusively, while the use of both Ba(O-i-Pr)2 and Ba(OCH2CH2OEt)2 (prepared in situ from Ba metal) as sources for Ba were studied. After dissolving Y(O-i-pr)3, a Ba source, and the copper(I) alkoxide, [Cu(O-i-Bu)]4, hydrolysis led immediately to an orange gelatinous solid which yielded YBa2Cu3O7-δ upon firing in oxygen. Copper(II) acetate was found to give heterogeneous mixtures under our conditions and was not further studied. Copper(II) acac (acac = acetylacetonate) yielded the best results. Partially hydrolyzed solutions of Cu(acac)2, Ba(OCH2CH2OEt)2, and Y(O-i-pr)3 were spin coated on SrTi03 (100) and fired under oxygen to give oriented (b axis normal to the surface) thin films of YBa2Cu3O7-δ. The onset of superconductivity for the films was 92 K, but they did not reach zero resistance until much lower temperatures.

A new organic–inorganic hybrid synthesized through a sol-gel process starting from alkoxysilane and chitosan is reported. Functionalization of the hybrid was effected through in situ hydrolysis–condensation reaction of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) in the reaction medium. The process yields highly transparent and hydrophobic silica–chitosan hybrids. The hybrid gel was investigated with respect to chemical modification, thermal degradation, hydrophobicity, and transparency under the ultraviolet-visible region. The extent of hydrophobicity had been tailored by varying the precursor ratio. SiO2–chitosan–MTMS hybrids showed a higher thermal stability than SiO2–chitosan–VTMS (SCV) hybrids with respect to hydrophobicity. Condensation of silsesquioxanes generated from the hydrolysis of MTMS and VTMS over the silica-chitosan particles impart hydrophobicity to the hybrid. The coatings of functionalized SiO2–chitosan precursor sol on glass substrates showed nearly 100% optical transmittance in the visible region. The present hybrid material may find application in optics and other industries.
