Herein, we present a facile synthesis of three azide-functionalized fluorophores and their covalent attachment as triazoles in Huisgen-type cycloadditions with model alkynes. Besides two ortho- and para-bromo-substituted benzaldehydes, the azide functionalization of a fluorene-based structure will be presented. The copper(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) of the so-synthesized azide-functionalized bromocarbaldehydes with terminal alkynes, exhibiting different degrees of steric demand, was performed in high efficiency. Finally, we investigated the photophysical properties of the azide-functionalized arenes and their covalently linked triazole derivatives to gain deeper insight towards the effect of these covalent linkers on the emission behavior.

Hexane-1,6-diammonium pentaiodobismuth (HDA-BiI5) is one of the narrowest bandgap molecular semiconductor reported in recent years. Through the study of its energy band structure, it can be identified as an N-type semiconductor and is able to absorb most of the visible light, making it suitable to fabricate solar cells. In this paper, SnO2 was used as an electron transport layer in HDA-BiI5-based solar cells, for its higher carrier mobility compared with TiO2, which is the electron transport layer used in previous researches. In addition, the dilution ratio of SnO2 solution has an effect on both the morphology and photophysical properties of HDA-BiI5 films. At the dilution ratio of SnO2:H2O = 3:8, the HDA-BiI5 film has a better morphology and is less defect inside, and the corresponding device exhibited the best photovoltaic performance.

We developed a two-step chemical bonding process using photosensitizer molecules to fabricate photofunctional nanolayer coatings on hematoporphyrin- (HP-) coated Ti substrates. In the first step, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane was covalently functionalized onto the surface of the Ti substrates to provide heterogeneous sites for immobilizing the HP molecules. Then, HP molecules with carboxyl groups were chemically attached to the amine-terminated nanolayer coatings via a carbodiimide coupling reaction. The microstructure and elemental and phase composition of the HP-coated Ti substrates were investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The photophysical properties of the photofunctional nanolayer coatings were confirmed using reflectance ultraviolet-visible absorption and emission spectrophotometry. The singlet oxygen generation efficiency of the photofunctional nanolayer coatings was determined using the decomposition reaction of 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran. The HP-coated Ti substrates exhibited good biocompatibility without any cytotoxicity, and these nanolayer coatings generated singlet oxygen, which can kill microorganisms using only visible light.
