The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze about absorption properties of the composite laminate, microstructure hybrid sisal and banana fiber with epoxy matrix. Composite manufacturing was done by hand lay-up method with a ratio of fiber volume fraction of sisal and banana trunks 0:40, 10:30, 15:25, 20:20, 30:10, 40:0 (%) With direction of sisalana agave fiber orientation and banana fiber by fiber length according to the mold. Specimen testing was done by the water absorption test with the standard ASTM D571-8,. Test results obtained from the average water absorption properties of composites with the highest ratio of fiber volume fraction of 40%: 0% is 42.4% while the lowest average water absorption properties contained in the composite with fiber volume fraction of 0%: 40%, with percentage of 11.5%. Therefore we can conclude the increasing volume fraction of sisal fiber withidirection of  fiber orientation, the lower of water absorption properties and conversely increasing the volume of woven banana fiber orientation, the higher of water absorptionproperties.

Hybrid kenaf/glass fibre mat reinforced unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites have been prepared by using simple hand lay up moulding technique. The composites with various formulations were characterized by flexural test while water absorption behaviour were investigated with immersion in distilled water at room temperature. The result shows that the hybrid composites with kenaf fibre mat at the innermost layers (glass fibre mat at the outer layers) has given the highest flexural strength and modulus. On the other hand, water absorption study shows that, the hybrid composites with glass fibre mat at the innermost layers (kenaf fibre mat at the outer layers) showed the highest water uptake and thickness swelling. Further investigations on morphological properties were also done to correlate the mechanical properties of the hybrid kenaf/glass fibre mat reinforced UPE composites.

The paper presents the effect of CaCO3 content on the tensile, flexural and water absorption properties of bamboo fiber/polystyrene-modified unsaturated polyester composites. Two volume fractions of bamboo fibers had been used with the CaCO3 content varied from 2.5 to 10 (wt%). The tensile and flexural properties were used to characterize the composites. In addition, the water absorption and its effect of the flexural properties had also been conducted. The results showed that at the bamboo content of 30%, adding CaCO3 up to 10wt% tended to decrease the tensile strength and elastic modulus of bamboo fiber/modified unsaturated polyester composites up to 27% and 4%, respectively; however, at the bamboo content of 20%, its effect was not significant for both the tensile strength and the elastic modulus. Adding CaCO3 seemed not to have a significant effect for both the flexural strength and modulus. Having exposed in distilled water, CaCO3 did not significantly affect the water uptakes and the flexural properties of bamboo fiber/modified unsaturated polyester composites; however, the flexural strength and modulus significantly decreased in the ranges of 24 - 45% and 36 - 43%, respectively, compared to those in dry condition.

Abstract Coconut shell (CS) reinforced unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites have been prepared by using hand lay-up and compression molding techniques. To improve fiber-matrix adhesion, the CS was chemically treated by two chemical treatments, which are alkali (NaOH) and alkali-silane with concentration NaOH (6%) and silane (2%). To enhance the performance of CS-UPE composites, graphene nano platelets (GNP) was also added as nanofiller. The water absorption tests were conducted to characterize the physical properties of the composites. The result shows that water absorption increases with the increasing GNP. The more adding of GNP fillers’ weight percentages, the higher the water absorption will be getting.

The Impact

Bio-based aerogels containing cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are promising materials due to the inherent physical properties of CNF. The high affinity of cellulose to plant hemicelluloses (xyloglucan, xylan, pectin) is also an opportunity to develop biomaterials with new properties. Here, we prepared aerogels from gelled dispersions of CNFs and xyloglucan (XG) at different ratios by using a freeze-casting procedure in unidirectional (UD) and non-directional (ND) manners. As showed by rheology analysis, CNF and CNF/XG dispersions behave as true gels. We investigated the impact of the freezing procedure and the gel’s composition on the microstructure and the water absorption properties. The introduction of XG greatly affects the microstructure of the aerogel from lamellar to cellular morphology. Bio-based aerogels showed high water absorption capacity with shape recovery after compression. The relation between morphology and aerogel compositions is discussed.
