Because of diamond’s wide band gap, high thermal conductivity, high breakdown voltage and high radiation resistance, there is a growing interest in developing diamond-based devices for several new and demanding electronic applications. In developing this technology, there are several new challenges to be overcome. Much of our effort has been directed at developing a diamond deposition process that will permit controlled, epitaxial growth. Also, because of cost and size considerations, it is mandatory that a non-native substrate be developed for heteroepitaxial nucleation and growth of diamond thin films. To this end, we are currently investigating the use of Ni single crystals on which different types of epitaxial metals are grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for lattice matching to diamond as well as surface chemistry modification. This contribution reports briefly on our microscopic observations that are integral to these endeavors.

This research is to fabricate a Pb/WC-ZrO2 inert electrode used in zinc electrodeposition. First, the potential-pH diagram of Pb-H2O system was constructed and the thermodynamic stable region was calibrated in the diagram. On the basis, the co-deposition of Pb, WC and ZrO2 particles from fluorboric acid solutions was realized on the surface of Pb-4wt%Sb substrate. The results show that deposition amounts of ZrO2 and WC particles in the inert electrodes increase with increasing ZrO2 concentrations in the bath, WC particle is easier to deposit into the inert electrodes than ZrO2 particle. The distribution of WC and ZrO2 particles as the second phase within metal matrix Pb is very uniform. Compared with Pb-1wt%Ag alloy electrode, Pb/9.91wt%WC-3.62wt%ZrO2 inert electrode possesses better catalytic activity of oxygen evolution.

ABSTRACTAlthough heteroepitaxy of lattice-matched and lattice-mismatched materials leading to artificially structured materials has resulted in impressive performance in various electronics devices, material combinations are usually limited by lattice matching constraints. A new concept for fabricating material systems using the atomically abrupt and low dimensional nature of layered materials, called van der Waals epitaxy (VDWE), has been developed. GaSe (Eg = 2.1 eV) has been deposited on the three dimensional surface of GaAs (111) using a molecular beam deposition system. GaSe was evaporated from a single Knudsen source, impinging on a heated substrate. Even with a lattice mismatch of 6% between the substrate and the growing film, good quality single crystal films were grown as determined by RHEED. The films have further been analyzed using a complementary combination of XPS and X-ray reflectivity.

The reversible electrodeposition of zinc was investigated in an aqueous electrolyte containing zinc bromide (50 mM) and 1-ethylpyridinium bromide ([C2Py]Br, 50 mM) by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and scanning electron microscopy. Unusual voltammetric behaviour for the Zn/ZnII redox couple was observed in the presence of [C2Py]Br. Passivation of the redox couple was observed after a single deposition–stripping cycle at switching potentials more negative than −1.25 V versus Ag/AgCl. This unusual behaviour was attributed to the reduction of 1-ethylpyridinium cations to pyridyl radicals and their follow-up reactions, which influenced the zinc electrochemistry. This behaviour was further seen to modify the nucleation process of electrodeposition, which altered the morphology of zinc electrodeposits.
