Medical diagnostic imaging and therapeutic applications using lasers such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and laser hyperthermia therapy have limited success due to the lack of penetration depth of light into in vivo tissues. Light can only travel a few millimeters into tissue before the effects of scattering and absorption attenuate it to unuseful levels.

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are able to convert long wavelength excitation light into high energy ultraviolet (UV) or visible emissions, and they have attracted significant attention because of their distinct photochemical properties including sharp emission bands, low autofluorescence, high tissue penetration depth and minimal photodamage to tissues.
