The high cost, potential toxicity, and possible enzyme inhibition ability of artificial mediators have limited the large-scale application of laccase (Lac)/mediator systems. Here, sinapic acid (SA), a natural mediator, was covalently attached to amino-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) via amide bond formation. The as-prepared SA@MNPs were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The SA@MNPs were then applied to evaluate the activity of the immobilized mediator for Lac-catalyzed dye decolorization using indigo carmine (IC) as a model dye. When SA and SA@MNPs were used as Lac mediators, IC decolorization yields of ∼93% and 96%, respectively, were obtained after 60 min. Moreover, SA@MNPs exhibited an IC decolorization yield of ∼90% after being reused for 8 cycles. The Lac/SA@MNP system was shown to degrade IC by breaking down the chromophoric group. The easy recyclability, good reusability, nontoxicity, and relatively low cost of SA@MNPs make this immobilized natural mediator a promising tool for dye treatment.

We synthesized carbon-coated iron magnetic nanoparticles by a low cost method using Ferric nitrate as the iron precursor and starch as both reductive agent and carbon source under H2 atmosphere. The structure, size distribution, phase composition, magnetic properties and oxidation resistance of the particles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry and differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that the carbon-coated iron nanoparticles are spherical particles with a diameter of 20-40 nm. They are particles of core-shell structure with an iron core inside and an onion skin carbon layer outside, carbon layer can protect inner iron core from been oxidized, the hysteresis curves show that they are super paramagnetic materials. At the same time the annealing can change the magnetic properties of carbon coated iron nanoparticles.

A rapid, direct, and low-cost method for detecting bacterial toxins associated with common gastrointestinal diseases remains a great challenge despite numerous studies and clinical assays. Motion-based detection through tracking the emerging micro- and nanorobots has shown great potential in chemo- and biosensing due to accelerated “chemistry on the move”. Here, we described the use of fluorescent magnetic spore–based microrobots (FMSMs) as a highly efficient mobile sensing platform for the detection of toxins secreted by Clostridium difficile (C. diff) that were present in patients’ stool. These microrobots were synthesized rapidly and inexpensively by the direct deposition of magnetic nanoparticles and the subsequent encapsulation of sensing probes on the porous natural spores. Because of the cooperation effect of natural spore, magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and functionalized carbon nanodots, selective fluorescence detection of the prepared FMSMs is demonstrated in C. diff bacterial supernatant and even in actual clinical stool samples from infectious patients within tens of minutes, suggesting rapid response and good selectivity and sensitivity of FMSMs toward C. diff toxins.

Magnetic plaster kiln dust (MPKD) was synthesized as a unique, low-cost composite reused of byproduct plaster kiln dust (PKD), which is considered a source of air pollution. The FESEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, VSM, and BET tests were used to characterize the MPKD. The characterization revealed that the MPKD was nanotubes non-agglomerated and super-paramagnetic with a high specific surface area (102.7 m2/g). Compared with the specific area of other materials (composites), the MPKD could be considered a promising substance in the field of water/wastewater treatment.

The ability to detect rare human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) in differentiated populations is critical for safeguarding the clinical translation of cell therapy, as these undifferentiated cells have the capacity to form teratomas in vivo. The detection of hPSCs must be performed using an approach compatible with traceable manufacturing of therapeutic cell products. Here, we report a novel microfluidic approach, stem cell quantitative cytometry (SCQC), for the quantification of rare hPSCs in hPSC-derived cardiomyocyte (CM) populations. This approach enables the ultrasensitive capture, profiling, and enumeration of trace levels of hPSCs labeled with magnetic nanoparticles in a low-cost, manufacturable microfluidic chip. We deploy SCQC to assess the tumorigenic risk of hPSC-derived CM populations in vivo. In addition, we isolate rare hPSCs from the differentiated populations using SCQC and characterize their pluripotency.

Abstract Ecuador is one of the most affected countries, with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, in Latin America derived from an ongoing economic crisis. One of the most important methods for COVID-19 detection is the use of techniques such as real time RT- PCR based on a previous extraction/purification of RNA procedure from nasopharyngeal cells using functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNP). This technique allows the processing of ~10,000 tests per day in private companies and around hundreds per day at local Universities guaranteeing to reach a wide range of the population. However, the main drawback of this method is the need for specialized MNP with a strong negative charge for the viral RNA purification to detect the existence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Here we present a simplified low cost method to produce 10 g of nanoparticles in 100 mL of solution that was scaled to one litter by parallelizing the process 10 times in just two days and allowing for the possibility of making ~50,000 COVID-19 tests. This communication helps in reducing the cost of acquiring MNP for diverse biomolecular applications supporting developing country budgets constraints and chemical availability specially during the COVID-19 International Health Emergency.

Water pollution by anthropogenic activities is proving to be of critical concern as the heavy metals affect aquatic organisms and can quickly disperse to large distances. This poses a risk to both human health and the aquatic biota. Hence, there is a need to treat the wastewater containing toxic metals before they are discharged into the water bodies. During recent years, magnetic nanoparticles came to the foreground of scientific interest as a potential adsorbent of novel wastewater treatment processes. Magnetic nanoparticles have received much attention due to their unique properties, such as extremely small size, high surface-area-to-volume ratio, surface modifiability, multi functionality, excellent magnetic properties, low-cost synthesis, and great biocompatibility. The multi-functional magnetic nanoparticles have been successfully applied for the reduction of toxic metal ions up to ppb level in waste-treated water. This chapter highlights the potential application of magnetic nanoparticles for the removal of heavy metals.

The authors report an approach to the fabrication of a periodic magnetic array using photosensitive polyimide-barium ferrite nanocomposite. These patterns are shaped by a some-like imprint technique, under the interactions between the magnetic nanoparticles and permanent magnetic mold. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to characterize the magnetic array and well-defined structures with magnetic arrays are obtained. The diameter of each dot is as small as 52um. The presented concept leads to a realization of a magnetic array, which offers advances in achieving micrometer-scale patterns with a very low cost and simple process.

Magnetic separation has gained much attention due to its implications in different fields, becoming feasible as an alternative to existent technologies at the industrial and lab scale. Substantial efforts are focused to improve the magnetic particles used in these applications. Here we show how a relatively simple and low-cost simulation strategy (tracer simulations) can be employed to predict the effect of various key factors in magnetic separation processes, namely, particle properties and magnetic separator designs. For concreteness, we consider here specific problems in magnetic separation. The first one is the effect of different profiles of the magnetic field in the separation of magnetic nanoparticles, and the second one is the magnetophoresis of colloidal particles in a dispersion of magnetic nanoparticles.
