A self-scanned photodiode array has been used as a multiplex sensor for laboratory detection and measurement, by dispersive spectroscopy, of trace quantities of the atmospheric pollutant NO2. The on-line data acquisition and numerical analysis system allows in particular to eliminate some systematic errors and drifts (Taylor filtering) and the noise associated with high spatial frequencies (low-pass filtering). We have then been able to show that an absorption spectrum, corresponding to low absorber concentrations, has a sufficient information content for the characterization of the pollutant and the measurement of its concentration (ppm m), even when noise and drifts are present. The proposed system can be favorably compared to the ones, based on a single photoelectric detector, which are commercially used.

The aim of this paper is to present a new ECG and motion activity monitoring and on-line analysis system for athle-tes. The developed system is intended to facilitate the coach in optimizing and individualizing the training of elite athletes.The hardware system consists of the device for registration of ECG and accelerometer signals and wireless trans-mission to computer. The coach software works in two modes: on-line version is used during training and off-line version is designed for detailed data analysis after training. The new method for respiration frequency evaluation was developed and checked on 28 persons, and in most cases the developed algorithm correctly evaluated the respiration frequency of the investigated persons. The evaluation of athlete’s functional state from calculated and measured pa-rameters and formation of warning signals (green — normal state, yellow — limitary state and red — premonitory state) is based on the analysis applying Moore and Mealy automata algorithms. The software for the evaluation of the patient’s activity was tested on 11 healthy students: the increase in physical activity level during the brisk walk was 1.4 times higher compared to the level during the slow walk, and during the jogging sessions it was 1.89 times higher than during the slow walk.The results obtained during the investigations show that the developed ECG and motion activity monitoring system with two packages of software allows to measure cardio respiratory changes and changes in intensities of physical activity under daily conditions. The comprehensive off-line analysis by monitoring data provides the possibility for coaches to make more detailed analysis of cardio respiratory changes and changes in intensities during training.Keywords: monitoring system for athletes, electrocardiogram, accelerometry, respiration frequency.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an on-line Cumulative Sentence Analysis (CSA) instruction on university engineering students' English reading comprehension. Within the framework of CSA instruction, the reading comprehension process can be divided into six steps: identifying finite verbs, finding key words, separating clauses, identifying subjects and main verbs, adding words stepwise, and translating the sentence. The results showed that the experimental group achieved a higher level of reading comprehension performance following the instruction. Inter-group comparison also revealed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in the post-test, while no difference was found between these groups in the pretest. The findings clearly demonstrated that on-line CSA instruction is an efficient and feasible approach to helping engineering students cope with their problems of reading English texts.

This paper discusses the use of computing machines in the biological and social sciences, namely the ultilization of computerized behavior analysis systems in the quantification of human behavior. Only systems of which living human organisms are a part are considered. Some specific functional uses of computers for stimulus preparation and presentation, response collection, and apparatus scheduling and control are presented. All of these functions may be performed by automated systems characterized by the amount of experimental integration and control performed by the computer. Systems types include on-line open-loop, on-line closed loop single or multiple purpose, and off-line. The multiple-man, multiple-purpose system which permits numerous automated investigations upon different source subjects to occur simultaneously is highlighted as the culmination of current automated behavioral analysis systems. But the possibility of behavioral scientists “tapping” into operating systems is presented as possibly having revolutionary consequences with respect to the data gathering of human behaviour. Finally, a general automated behavioral analysis system schematic assists in discussing current advantages, potential advances, and impending limitations of contributions of computers to the quantification of human behavior.
