The Influence of Traffic Signal Solutions on Self-Reported Road-Crossing Behavior

AbstractInjury to pedestrians is a major safety hazard in many countries. Since the beginning of the last century, modern cities have been designed around the use of motor vehicles despite the unfavourable interactions between the vehicles and pedestrians. This push towards urbanization resulted in a substantial number of crashes and fatalities involving pedestrians every day, all over the world. Thus, improving the design of urban cities and townships is a pressing issue for modern society. The study presented here provides a characterization of pedestrian safety problems, with the emphasis on signalized crosswalks (i.e. traffic signal) design solutions. We tested the impact of seven different traffic light configurations (steady [green, yellow, and red], flashing [green, yellow, and red], and light off) on pedestrian self-reported road-crossing behavior, using a 11-point scale -ranging from 0 (“I never cross in this situation”) to 10 (“I always cross in this situation”). Results showed that mandatory solutions (steady green vs. steady red) are the best solutions to avoid unsafe pedestrian behaviors while crossing controlled intersections (frequency of crossing: Mgreen = 9.4 ± 1 vs. Mred = 2.6 ± 2). These findings offer important guidelines for the design of future traffic signals for encouraging a pedestrian/transit-friendly environment.

Abstract: Traffic signal control frameworks are generally used to monitor and control the progression of cars through the intersection of roads. Moreover, a portable controller device is designed to solve the issue of emergency vehicles stuck in overcrowded roads. The main objective of this paper is to design and implement a suitable algorithm and its simulation for an intelligent traffic signal simulator. The framework created can detect the presence or nonappearance of vehicles within a specific reach by setting appropriate duration for traffic signals to react accordingly. By employing mathematical functions and algorithms to ascertain the suitable timing for the green signal to illuminate, the framework can assist with tackling the issue of traffic congestion. We investigated the effect of color-vision deficiency on reaction times and accuracy of identification of traffic light signals. Participants were 20 color-normal and 49 color-deficient males, the latter divided into subgroups of different severity and type. Participants performed a tracking task. At random intervals, stimuli simulating standard traffic light signals were presented against a white background at 5° to right or left. Participants identified stimulus color (red/yellow/green) by pressing an appropriate response button. Mean response times for color normals were 525, 410, and 450 ms for red, yellow, and green lights, respectively. For color deficients, response times to red lights increased with increase in severity of color deficiency, with deutans performing worse than protans of similar severity: response times of deuteranopes and protanopes were 53% and 35% longer than those of color normals. A similar pattern occurred for yellow lights, with deuteranopes and protanopes having increased response times of 85% and 53%, respectively. For green lights, response times of all groups were similar. Error rates showed patterns similar to those of response times. Contrary to previous studies, deutans performed much worse than protans of similar severity. Actual or potential applications of this research include traffic signal design and driver licensing.

Traffic Light Optimization aims to find the solution for an increased amount of unnecessary waiting time on traffic signals. Traffic Signal Optimization is the process of changing the timing parameters relative to the length of the green light for each traffic movement and the timed relationship between signalized intersections using a computer software program. Our project aims to set the timer of green light based on real-time traffic congestion i.e. number of vehicles in a particular direction of the traffic light. To work in this project, we are using the OpenCV method to detect vehicles and then perform our calculation in the algorithm to predict the time for the green light to be in an active state.

Traffic signal optimization for traffic signals located near highway-rail grade crossings (HRGC) can be difficult because of the complex nature of the interactions between the two systems and the necessity of considering multiple objectives, such as safety and operational efficiency. The problems are magnified when considering traffic control for corridors that have multiple intersections located near HRGCs. This paper develops a methodology for optimizing traffic signals along a highway-railway corridor while considering the dual objectives of maximizing safety and efficiency. The Highway 6 (Cornhusker Hwy) corridor in Lincoln, Nebraska was used as a test bed. The corridor was modeled in VISSIM, and was used to emulate the traffic control along Highway 6, including the preemption logic. The traffic control logic was modeled using the Vehicle Actuated Programming (VAP) in the VISSIM simulation model. In addition, the logic allows multiple train events on the railway track that runs parallel to Highway 6 to be modeled. The model was calibrated to local traffic conditions using empirical field data. The impact of train frequency, length, direction, speed, etc., on the performance of the network and pedestrian safety will be evaluated.

An innovative “bike box”—a right-angle extension to a bike lane (BL) at the head of the intersection—was installed with accompanying traffic signs but no extra traffic signals at a busy downtown intersection featuring two one-way streets in Eugene, Oregon, in summer 1998. The box allows bicyclists traveling to the intersection in a left side BL to get to the head of the traffic queue on a red traffic signal indication and then proceed ahead of motor vehicle traffic toward a right side BL when the traffic signal changes to green. Cyclists traveling through the intersection were videotaped before and after placement of the box. The videotapes were coded to evaluate operational behaviors and conflicts with motorists, other bicyclists, and pedestrians. Twenty-two percent of the bicyclists who approached in the left side BL and then crossed to the BL on the right side of the street (the bicyclists for whom the box was most intended) used the box. Many more bicyclists in this target group could have used the box (i.e., they had a red signal indication and enough time to move into the box). A problem with motor vehicle encroachments into the box likely diminished the frequency of use. The rate of conflicts between bicycles and motor vehicles changed little in the before and after periods. No conflicts took place while the bike box was being used as intended.

Noise Pollution is a growing problem in Modern cities, thanks to rapid population growth, urbanization and new technologies. Moreover, at times, a noisy neighbor or co-worker can drive you crazy and affect your wellbeing. Traffic light control systems ar widely used to monitor and control the flow of automobiles through the junction of many roads. They aim to realize smooth motion of cars in the transportation routes. However, this system also leads to Noise Pollution which this present traffic signal doesn’t considers a problem. But any sound which crosses the parameter of 90 Hz is considered Noise which you’ll get to hear at each and every traffic signal present at every adjacent intersection. Exposure to prolonged or excessive noise has been shown to cause range of health problems ranging from stress, poor concentration, productivity loss in the workplace, and communication difficulties and fatigue from lack of sleep, to more serious issues such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, tinnitus and hearing loss. Hence, to overcome all these problems and help our society we propose a system based on Arduino with High-end microphone sensors and our algorithm to detect and distinguish between Normal sound and Noise based on that decision Vehicle riders present at that traffic signal will be penalized with extra time to spend on that junction

The quality of life underlying the modern society can be attributed to several factors, among them, the technological and economic development experienced in recent years. Durable consumer goods are part of this modern society, such as automobiles. However, because most automobiles are powered by the combustion of fossil fuels, the emission of greenhouse gases is a worrisome environmental problem. The objective of this article is to analyze Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data, population and SELIC rate (SELIC stands for Special System of Settlement and Custody) in the period from 2001 to 2020 to evaluate the impact on the number of vehicles in the Cariri Metropolitan Region (RMC), using multivariate models. It was verified that the fleet of the RMC experienced an increase of 561.45% in the last 20 years. Three prediction models were tested and the conclusion was reached that for the next 20 years it is not sustainable to maintain the same growth already experienced, in a linear manner. Instead, the ideal is to adopt a model with growth forecast with a logarithmic function, i. e. with a stationary tendency in the long time. In a society where over 50% of vehicles are more than 10 years old, it is essential that public managers, the private initiative, the academic-scientific environment and society adopt sustainable practices and consider future scenarios to make decisions in order to preserve the environment and to ensure everyone's quality of life.

In reinforcement learning (RL), dealing with non-stationarity is a challenging issue. However, some domains such as traffic optimization are inherently non-stationary. Causes for and effects of this are manifold. In particular, when dealing with traffic signal controls, addressing non-stationarity is key since traffic conditions change over time and as a function of traffic control decisions taken in other parts of a network. In this paper we analyze the effects that different sources of non-stationarity have in a network of traffic signals, in which each signal is modeled as a learning agent. More precisely, we study both the effects of changing the context in which an agent learns (e.g., a change in flow rates experienced by it), as well as the effects of reducing agent observability of the true environment state. Partial observability may cause distinct states (in which distinct actions are optimal) to be seen as the same by the traffic signal agents. This, in turn, may lead to sub-optimal performance. We show that the lack of suitable sensors to provide a representative observation of the real state seems to affect the performance more drastically than the changes to the underlying traffic patterns.

Abstract With the rapid growth of the number of motor vehicles in the city, traffic congestion is more serious every day, part of it is caused by the coding delay with the red light on, not real traffic jams, now we need a control system that can really change the traffic flow. In this paper, ITLCS (intelligent traffic signal control system) based on OpenCV image processing technology is proposed to adjust the timing of traffic signal according to road density, instead of setting a level that is balanced with other lanes, so that high-load traffic lanes can be used for a long time. The camera facing the roadway in the system takes pictures of the driving route, then takes pictures of the driving density of pedestrians and vehicles, and compares each image through processing technology, after the system is processed, the traffic light signal timing can be adjusted immediately, which greatly reduces the time spent on the inactive green light and can effectively deal with the traffic congestion problem.

The process of globalization, which many times is considered as new world order is affecting all spheres of modern society but also the media. In this paper specifically we will see the impact of globalization because we see changing the media access to global problems in general being listed on these processes. We will see that the greatest difficulties will have small media as such because the process is moving in the direction of creating mega media which thanks to new technology are reaching to deliver news and information at the time of their occurrence through choked the small media. So it is fair to conclude that the rapid economic development and especially the technology have made the world seem "too small" to the human eyes, because for real-time we will communicate with the world with the only one Internet connection, and also all the information are take for the development of events in the four corners of the world and direct from the places when the events happen. Even Albanian space has not left out of this process because the media in the Republic of Albania and the Republic of Kosovo are adapted to the new conditions under the influence of the globalization process. This fact is proven powerful through creating new television packages, written the websites and newspapers in their possession.
