The Upper Devonian (Frasnian) conodont sequence in the Lime Creek Formation of north-central Iowa and comparison with Lime Creek ammonoid, brachiopod, foraminifer, and gastropod sequences

The Upper Devonian (Frasnian) conodont fauna of the Lime Creek Formation of north-central Iowa is dominated by species of Polygnathus. Patterns of species composition and abundance are consistent with the Polygnathus biofacies described from the Frasnian of the Northwest Territories of western Canada. Consequently, the standard Frasnian conodont zones, defined on sequences developed in the Palmatolepis biofacies, are not applicable to the Lime Creek sequence. The Lime Creek conodont sequence correlates with Zones 4, 5 and Faunal Interval 7 of the Frasnian conodont sequence in the Alberta Rockies and with similar sequences in the southwestern United States. The Pb elements of Palmatolepis semichatovae Ovnatanova and Ancyrognathus? deformis (Anderson) are described and illustrated for the first time.In the Lime Creek Formation of north-central Iowa, brachiopods of the lowermost part of the Nervostrophia thomasi Zone of Day (1989a) occur in Zone 4, brachiopods of most of the N. thomasi, Douvillina arcuata, and Cyrtospirifer whitneyi Zones span conodont Zone 5, and the Elita inconsueta and Iowatrypa owenensis Zones occur in Faunal Interval 7. Species of the ammonoid Manticoceras and of the gastropods Floyda, Turbonopsis, and Westerna are restricted to Faunal Interval 7. Species of the calcareous foraminifer Nanicella first occur in Zone 5, and are joined by species of Multiseptida high in Zone 5.

The detailed study of the Guryanovka Formation key sections at the northeast of Gorny Altai (Biya and Bura sections) for the first time revealed the representative collection of conodonts. The conodont fauna is composed of 12 species belong to 9 genera: Belodina compressa (Branson and Mehl, 1933), Phragmodus undatus Branson and Mehl, 1933, Panderodus gracilis (Branson and Mehl, 1933), Panderodus acostatus (Branson, Branson, 1947), Tasmanognatus careyi Burret, 1979, Aphelognathus sp., Panderodus sp., Drepanoistodus sp., Drepantodus sp., Colaptoconus sp., Paltodus sp., Scandodus sp. For the first time, the precise position of the P. undatus conodont Zone was defined in Gorny Altai (continuous Biya Section, base of unit 3).

Eight new acritarch species, four of which are assigned to new genera, are described from Givetian and Frasnian strata of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The new taxa are Apectosphaeridium apoplanium n.gen. et sp., Asyncosmium isum n.gen. et sp., Cerastum pelorum n.gen. et sp., Variolidium omnium n.gen. et sp., Goniosphaeridium rallum n.sp., Leiosphaeridia gigantea n.sp., Polyedryxium leptum n.sp., and Saharidia perplexa n.sp.

Forty-eight species of Polyporaceae are reported for the first time from the four western Provinces and Yukon and District of Mackenzie of the Northwest Territories. The number of species reported are from Manitoba 11, Saskatchewan 8, Alberta 20, British Columbia 10, Yukon Territory 4, and Northwest Territories (Mackenzie Dist.) 13.

SummarySeveral conodont faunas from the Ilfracombe Slates are described and their age discussed. One is referred to the conodont zone of Polygnathus varcus (late Givetian-early Frasnian). The conodonts, the first from the Devonian of North Devon, indicate that, in terms of the German standard, the uppermost Ilfracombe Slates are no younger than basal Manticoceras Stufe in age. The position of the Middle/Upper Devonian boundary within the North Devon sequence is discussed with reference to the limestones of the Combe Martin Slates (the ‘Ilfracombe limestones’), which are regarded here as Middle Devonian in age.

AbstractThe base of the Emsian, which is defined by the first appearance of the conodont Polygnathus kitabicus, has never been successfully demonstrated in the South China Block (including Guangxi and eastern Yunnan). As a result, we studied conodonts from the lowermost part of the Shizhou Member of the Yukiang Formation at the Dacun-1 section in the Liujing area, Guangxi. This new investigation has revealed a conodont fauna only consisting of Polygnathus pireneae, P. sokolovi, P. kitabicus, P. sp. and Pandorinellina exigua philipi, which can be assigned to the uppermost part of the pireneae Zone and the lowermost part of the kitabicus Zone in ascending order. The Pragian/Emsian boundary at the Dacun-1 section is located in the highest thick-bedded limestone bed that can be observed in the lowermost part of the Shizhou Member. Therefore, this is the first time that the lower boundary of the Emsian defined by the lowest occurrence of P. kitabicus is reported in the South China Block. However, the scarcity of suitable limestone samples for conodont analysis in the middle and upper parts of the Shizhou Member precludes definitive identification of the upper boundary of the kitabicus Zone in the Liujing area.

The Chattanooga Shale of the southern Appalachian Basin contains a diverse conodont fauna of the high Givetian, Frasnian, and Famennian. The predominantly fine-grained strata were deposited in an offshore setting where depositional packages are separated by unconformities. Conodonts allow regional and global correlation of these strata, recognition of the Frasnian-Famennian boundary, and narrow biostratigraphic constraint of two Frasnian ash beds, MN Zone 8 for the Belpre Ash and upper MN Zone 13 for the Center Hill Ash. Three new Frasnian palmatolepid conodonts are described in open nomenclature, and the holotype ofPalmatolepis regularisCooper is reillustrated.

New data was added to the oribatid species composition of the Rivnensky Nature Reserve. Overall, 62 mite species were recorded for the territory of research in this study. The species Acrogalumna longipluma, Micreremus brevipes, Licneremaeus licnophorus, Oribatella reticulata, and Porobelba spinosa were not previously listed for the Western Polissia. Of the 60 species of Lower Oribatida mites that have been recorded by other authors in that area, only 18 are found again in the Rivnensky Nature Reserve, indicating that our results are intermediate. A representative of the genus Mainothrus Choi, 1996 (Mainothrus badius (Berlese, 1905)) is found in Ukraine for the first time.
