The title of this Article pays homage to Greg Frederickson's widelyknown book on geometrical dissections, Dissections: Plane & Fancy [1]. I enjoyed the book so much, I built an honours geometry course around it − a terminal mathematics course for honours students needing a mathematics credit for their general education requirements. Not only is there significant geometry involved, but there is a fair amount of number theory relevant to finding infinite families of dissections of, for example, m squares to n squares. However, although many dissections from one regular polygon to another are quite elegant, the mathematics involved in specifying the dissections is often formidable.

Measures of dogmatism, ethnocentrism, and authoritarianism were administered to freshmen invitees to a special Humanities Program and again 2 yr. later. Mean changes on the three scales were reported for two groups: (a) Ss who accepted the invitation and completed the sequence and (b) Ss who declined the invitation and completed the college general education requirements in the conventional “collection of courses” fashion. Both groups changed significantly toward decreased dogmatism, ethnocentrism, and dogmatism but Group (a) had the largest net change from an initially lower level on each of the scales.

In some countries, university students fulfill a set of general education requirements in addition to the core requirements for their major program of study. The role of general education requirements is to broaden students, particularly with respect to general skills and knowledge such as reasoning, communicating, understanding the natural and social world, and appreciating cultures, the arts, and human values. In this paper, we propose that community informatics can be part of contemporary general education. We present a brief course outline for a notional CI 101 in order to promote more concrete consideration and critical analysis of this proposal.
