Passive pitching of splitters in the trailing edge of elliptic cylinders

The distinctive pitching of hinged splitters in the trailing edge of elliptic cylinders was experimentally studied at various angles of attack ($AoA$) of the cylinder, Reynolds numbers, splitter lengths, aspect ratios ($AR$) of the cylinder and freestream turbulence levels. High-resolution telemetry and hotwire anemometry were used to characterize and gain insight on the dynamics of splitters and wake flow. Results show that the motions of the splitters contain various dominating modes, e.g. $f_{p}$ and $f_{v}$, which are induced by the mean flow and wake dynamics. High background turbulence dampens the coherence of the regular vortex shedding leading to negligible $f_{v}$. For a sufficiently long splitter, namely twice the semimajor axis of the cylinder, dual vortex shedding mode exists close to the leading and trailing edges of the splitter. In general, the splitters oscillate around an equilibrium position nearly parallel to the mean direction of the flow; however, a skewed equilibrium is also possible with a strong recirculation region. This is the case with cylinders of low $AR$ and high $AoA$, where higher lift and drag occurs. Flow measurements at various transverse locations within the wake of the cylinder–splitter system indicate that the signature of the low-frequency splitter pitching is shifted in the wake in the cases with non-zero $AoA$ of the cylinder. Although the splitter pitching exhibits two dominant vortex shedding modes in various configurations, only the higher frequency is transmitted to the wake.

The turbulent character of the supersonic wake of a linear cascade of fan airfoils has been studied using a two-component laser-doppler anemometer. The cascade was tested in the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University intermittent wind tunnel facility, where the Mach and Reynolds numbers were 2.36 and 4.8 × 106, respectively. In addition to mean flow measurements, Reynolds normal and shear stresses were measured as functions of cascade incidence angle and streamwise locations spanning the near-wake and the far-wake. The extremities of profiles of both the mean and turbulent wake properties´ were found to be strongly influenced by upstream shock-boundary -layer interactions, the strength of which varied with cascade incidence. In contrast, the peak levels of turbulence properties within the shear layer were found to be largely independent of incidence, and could be characterized in terms of the streamwise position only. The velocity defect turbulence level was found to be 23 percent, and the generally accepted value of the turbulence structural coefficient of 0.30 was found to be valid for this flow. The degree of similarity of the mean flow wake profiles was established, and those profiles demonstrating the most similarity were found to approach a state of equilibrium between the mean and turbulent properties. In general, this wake flow may be described as a classical free shear flow, upon which the influence of upstream shock-boundary-layer interactions has been superimposed.

Understanding the wake characteristics between two in-line vehicles is essential for improving and developing new strategies for reducing in-cabin air pollution. In this study, Ahmed bodies are used to investigate the effects of the rear slant angle of a leading vehicle on the mean flow and turbulent statistics between two vehicles. The experiments were conducted with a particle image velocimetry at a fixed Reynolds number, R e H = 1.7 × 10 4 , and inter-vehicle spacing distance of 0.75 L , where H and L are the height and length of the model. The rear slant angles investigated were a reference square back, high-drag angle ( α = 25 ° ) and low-drag angle ( α = 35 ° ). The mean velocities, Reynolds stresses, production of turbulent kinetic energy and instantaneous swirling strength are used to provide physical insight into the wake dynamics between the two bodies. The results indicate that the recirculation region behind the square back Ahmed body increases while those behind the slant rear-end bodies decreases in the presence of a follower. For the square back models, the dominant motion in the wake region is a strong upwash of jet-like flow away from the road but increasing the rear slant angle induces a stronger downwash flow that suppresses the upwash and dominates the wake region.

An experimental study was conducted to explore the effect of surface flexibility at the leading and trailing edges on the near-wake flow dynamics of a sinusoidal heaving foil. Midspan particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were taken in a closed-loop wind tunnel at a Reynolds number of 25,000 and at a range of reduced frequencies (k = fc/U) from 0.09 to 0.20. Time-resolved and phase-locked measurements are used to describe the mean flow characteristics and phase-averaged vortex structures and their evolution. Large-eddy scale (LES) decomposition and swirling strength analysis are used to quantify the vortical structures. The results demonstrate that trailing edge flexibility has minimal influence on the mean flow characteristics. The mean velocity deficit for the flexible trailing edge and rigid foils remains constant for all reduced frequencies tested. However, the trailing edge flexibility increases the swirling strength of the small-scale structures, resulting in enhanced cross-stream dispersion. Flexibility at the leading edge is shown to generate a large-scale leading edge vortex (LEV) for k ≥ 0.18. This results in a reduction in the swirling strength due to vortex interactions when compared to the flexible trailing edge and rigid foils. Furthermore, it is shown that the large-scale LEV is responsible for extracting a significant portion of energy from the mean flow, reducing the mean flow momentum in the wake. The kinetic energy loss in the wake is shown to scale with the energy content of the LEV.

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to study the flow structure and turbulence, upstream, over, and downstream a shallow open cavity. Three sets of PIV measurements, corresponding to a turbulent incoming boundary layer and a cavity length-to-depth ratio of four, are reported. The cavity depth based Reynolds numbers were 21,000; 42,000; and 54,000. The selected flow configuration and well characterized inflow conditions allow for straightforward assessment of turbulence models and numerical schemes. All mean flow field measurements display a large flow recirculation region, spanning most of the cavity and a smaller, counter-rotating, secondary vortex, immediately downstream of the cavity leading edge. The Galilean decomposed instantaneous velocity vector fields, clearly demonstrate two distinct modes of interaction between the free shear and the cavity trailing edge. The first corresponds to a cascade of vortical structures emanating from the tip of the leading edge of the cavity that grow in size as they travel downstream and directly interact with the trailing edge, i.e., impinging vortices. The second represents vortices that travel above the trailing edge of the cavity, i.e., non-impinging vortices. In the case of impinging vortices, a strong, large scale region of recirculation forms inside the cavity and carries the flow disturbances, arising from the impingement of vortices on the trailing edge of the cavity, upstream in a manner that interacts with and influences the flow as it separates from the cavity leading edge.

High-incidence lift generation via flow reattachment is studied. Different reattachment mechanisms are distinguished, with dynamic manoeuvres and tip vortex downwash being separate mechanisms. We focus on the latter mechanism, which is strictly available to finite wings, and isolate it by considering steadily translating wings. The tip vortex downwash provides a smoother merging of the flow at the trailing edge, thus assisting in establishing a Kutta condition there. This decreases the strength/amount of vorticity shed from the trailing edge, and in turn maintains an effective bound circulation resulting in continued lift generation at high angles of attack. Just below the static lift-stall angle of attack, strong vorticity is shed at the trailing edge indicating an increasingly intermittent reattachment/detachment of the instantaneous flow at mid-span. Above this incidence, the trailing-edge shear layer increases in strength/size representing a negative contribution to the lift and leads to stall. Lastly, we show that the mean-flow topology is equivalent to a vortex pair regardless of the particular physical flow configuration.

The unsteady flow field produced by a tandem cylinder system with the upstream cylinder yawed to the mean flow direction is investigated for upstream cylinder yaw angles from α = 60° to α = 90°. Multi-point fluctuating surface pressure and hotwire measurements were conducted at various spanwise positions on both the upstream and downstream cylinders. The results indicate that yawing the front cylinder to the mean flow direction causes the pressure and velocity spectra on the upstream and downstream cylinders to become more broadband than for a regular tandem cylinder system, and reduces the magnitude of the peak associated with the vortex-shedding. However, span-wise correlation and coherence measurements indicate that the vortex-shedding is still present and was being obscured by the enhanced three-dimensionality that the upstream yawed cylinder caused and was still present and correlated from front to back, at least for the larger yaw angles investigated. When the cylinder was yawed to α = 60°, the pressure fluctuations became extremely broadband and exhibited shorter spanwise correlation.

The paper presents a state-of-the-art review of turbine trailing edge flows, both from an experimental and numerical point of view. With the help of old and recent high-resolution time resolved data, the main advances in the understanding of the essential features of the unsteady wake flow are collected and homogenized. Attention is paid to the energy separation phenomenon occurring in turbine wakes, as well as to the effects of the aerodynamic parameters chiefly influencing the features of the vortex shedding. Achievements in terms of unsteady numerical simulations of turbine wake flow characterized by vigorous vortex shedding are also reviewed. Whenever possible the outcome of a detailed code-to-code and code-to-experiments validation process is presented and discussed, on account of the adopted numerical method and turbulence closure.

It is shown how natural and forced unsteadiness play a major role in turbine blade trailing edge cooling flows. Reynolds averaged simulations are presented for a surface jet in coflow, resembling the geometry of the pressure side breakout on a turbine blade. Steady computations show very effective cooling; however, when natural—or even moreso, forced—unsteadiness is allowed, the adiabatic effectiveness decreases substantially. Streamwise vortices in the mean flow are found to be the cause of the increased heat transfer.

The capability of three different perturbation approaches to tackle airframe noise problems is studied. The three approaches represent different levels of complexity and are applied to trailing edge noise problems. In the Euler-perturbation approach the linearized Euler equations without sources are used as governing acoustic equations. The sound generation and propagation is studied for several trailing edge shapes (blunt, sharp, and round trailing edges) by injecting upstream of the trailing edge test vortices into the mean-flow field. The efficiency to generate noise is determined for the trailing edge shapes by comparing the different generated sound intensities due to an initial standard vortex. Mach number scaling laws are determined varying the mean-flow Mach number. In the second simulation approach an extended acoustic analogy based on acoustic perturbation equations (APEs) is applied to simulate trailing edge noise of a flat plate. The acoustic source terms are computed from a synthetic turbulent velocity model. Furthermore, the far field is computed via additional Kirchhoff extrapolation. In the third approach the sources of the extended acoustic analogy are computed from a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of the compressible flow problem. The directivities due to a modeled and a LES based source, respectively, compare qualitatively well in the near field. In the far field the asymptotic directivities from the Kirchhoff extrapolation agree very well with the analytical solution of Howe. Furthermore, the sound pressure spectra can be shown to have similar shape and magnitude for the last two approaches.
