Observations of turbulent secondary flows in a rough-wall boundary layer

AbstractThe characteristics of a turbulent boundary layer overlying a complex roughness topography were explored with stereo particle-image velocimetry measurements in the wall-normal–spanwise $(y\mbox{--}z)$ plane. The roughness under consideration was replicated from a turbine blade damaged by deposition of foreign materials containing a broad range of topographical scales arranged in a highly irregular manner. The single-point turbulence statistics displayed strong spanwise heterogeneity, in particular spanwise-alternating low- and high-momentum flow pathways in the mean flow marked by enhanced Reynolds stresses and turbulent kinetic energy. The spanwise regions between high- and low-momentum flow pathways were occupied by swirling motions, suggesting the generation and sustainment of turbulent secondary flows due to the spanwise heterogeneity of the complex roughness under consideration. Similar observations were recently reported for more ordered spanwise roughness transitions by Nugroho, Hutchins & Monty (Intl J. Heat Fluid Flow vol. 41, 2013, pp. 90–102) and Willingham et al. (Phys. Fluids vol. 26, 2014, 025111).

This paper presents results of an experimental investigation on the response of a rotor boundary layer to an impinging Inlet Guide Vane (IGV) wake. High resolution two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements are conducted in a refractive index matched facility that provides an unobstructed view of the entire flow field. Data obtained at four different rotor phases, as the wake is chopped and passes by the rotor blade, allows us to examine the response of the rotor boundary layer to the mean flow and turbulence associated with the impinging wake. We focus on the suction side boundary layer in regions with adverse pressure gradients, from mid chord to the trailing edge. The phase-averaged velocity profiles are used for calculating the momentum and displacement thicknesses of the boundary layer, and for estimating the pressure gradients along the wall. Distributions of Reynolds stresses are also provided. The phase-averaged velocity profiles in the rotor boundary layer vary significantly with phase. During wake impingement the boundary layer becomes significantly thinner and more stable compared to other phases at the same location. Analysis of the possible causes for this trend suggests that the dominant contributors are unsteady, phase-dependent variation in pressure gradients along the wall.

A naphthalene sublimation technique is used to determine the circumferential and longitudinal variations of mass transfer from a smooth circular cylinder in a crossflow of air. The effect of the three-dimensional secondary flows near the wall-attached ends of a cylinder is discussed. For a cylinder Reynolds number of 19000, local enhancement of the mass transfer over values in the center of the tunnel are observed up to a distance of 3.5 cylinder diameters from the tunnel wall. In a narrow span extending from the tunnel wall to about 0.066 cylinder diameters above it (about 0.75 of the mainstream boundary layer displacement thickness), increases of 90 to 700 percent over the two-dimensional flow mass transfer are measured on the front portion of the cylinder. Farther from the wall, local increases of up to 38 percent over the two-dimensional values are measured. In this region, increases of mass transfer in the rear portion of the cylinder, downstream of separation, are, in general, larger and cover a greater span than the increases in the front portion of the cylinder.

In low-pressure-turbines (LPT) around 60–70% of losses are generated away from end-walls, while the remaining 30–40% is controlled by the interaction of the blade profile with the end-wall boundary layer. Experimental and numerical studies have shown how the strength and penetration of the secondary flow depends on the characteristics of the incoming end-wall boundary layer. Experimental techniques did shed light on the mechanism that controls the growth of the secondary vortices, and scale-resolving CFD allowed to dive deep into the details of the vorticity generation. Along these lines, this paper discusses the end-wall flow characteristics of the T106 LPT profile at Re = 120K and M = 0.59 by benchmarking with experiments and investigating the impact of the incoming boundary layer state. The simulations are carried out with proven Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and large-eddy simulation (LES) solvers to determine if Reynolds Averaged models can capture the relevant flow details with enough accuracy to drive the design of this flow region. Part I of the paper focuses on the critical grid needs to ensure accurate LES, and on the analysis of the overall time averaged flow field and comparison between RANS, LES and measurements when available. In particular, the growth of secondary flow features, the trace and strength of the secondary vortex system, its impact on the blade load variation along the span and end-wall flow visualizations are analysed. The ability of LES and RANS to accurately predict the secondary flows is discussed together with the implications this has on design.

A new set of experiments have been performed in order to study the effects of the upstream conditions and the surface roughness on a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer. In order to properly capture the x-dependence of the single point statistics, consecutive measurements of 11 streamwise locations were performed. These 2-D Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) measurements enable us to use the full boundary layer equations in order to calculate the skin friction and determine the boundary layer development which is not possible in the majority of experiments on rough surfaces. It will be shown that for fixed experimental conditions (i.e., fixed upstream wind tunnel speed, trip wire, etc), the velocity deficit profiles collapse for each of the scalings investigated but only the Zagarola/Smits scaling (1998) could collapse all the different experimental conditions into a single curve. In addition, the Reynolds stresses were increasingly affected by the surface roughness as the roughness parameter, k+, increased. Moreover, it was found that the shape of the Reynolds stress profiles was very different throughout the entire boundary layer, particularly the < u2 > component. This is likely the result of the flow becoming more isotropic for increased k+, and will be seen in the anisotropy coefficients. Moreover, increased production of < u2 > and < uv > due to roughness is also seen throughout the entire boundary layer although its overall role in the changing shape of the < u2 > profiles still needs to be determined. The effect of roughness on the boundary layer parameters is also evident and their x-dependence is also shown.

This paper reports on an experimental study of the nature of the tip clearance flow in a moderately loaded compressor rotor. The measurements reported were obtained using a stationary two-sensor, hot-wire probe in combination with an ensemble averaging technique. The flow field was surveyed at various radial locations and at ten axial locations, four of which were inside the blade passage in the clearance region and the remaining six outside the passage. Variations of the mean flow properties in the tangential and the radial directions at various axial locations were derived from the data. Variation of leakage velocity at different axial stations and the annulus-wall boundary layer profiles from passage-averaged mean velocities were also estimated. The results indicate that there exists a region of strong interaction of the leakage flow with the annulus-wall boundary layer at half-chord. The profiles are well-behaved beyond this point. The rotor exit flow is found to be uniform beyond 3/4 blade chord downstream of the rotor trailing edge.

The flow in a linear turbine cascade (Gregory-Smith et al. (1990)) is numerically investigated using a Reynolds Stress Turbulence closure. A particular attention is given to secondary flows where the normal Reynolds stresses are expected to play an important role. The most classical turbulence closure, the k-epsilon model uses the Boussinesq Eddy Viscosity concept which assumes an isotropic turbulent viscosity. The Reynolds stresses are then related to local velocity gradients by this isotropic eddy viscosity. Corollary, the principal axes of the Reynolds stress tensor are colinear with those of the mean strain tensor. The advantage of Reynolds Stress Turbulence closure is the calculation of Reynolds stresses by their own individual transport equations. This leads to a more realistic description of the turbulence and of its dependance on the mean flow. The most classical Second Order turbulence model (Launder et al. (1975)) is applied to a linear turbine cascade, and the results are compared to secondary velocity and turbulence measurements at cross-passage planes.

A particle image velocimetry is used to study the characteristics of separated and reattached turbulent flow over two-dimensional transverse blocks of square, rectangular and semi-circular cross-sections fixed to the bottom wall of an open channel. The ratio of upstream boundary layer thickness to block height is considerably higher than in prior studies. The results show that the mean and turbulent statistics in the recirculation region and downstream of reattachment are significantly different from the upstream boundary layer. The variation of the Reynolds stresses along the separating streamlines is discussed within the context of vortex stretching, longitudinal strain rate and wall damping. It appears wall damping is a more dominant mechanism in the vicinity of reattachment. The levels of turbulence diffusion and production by the normal stresses are significantly higher than in classical turbulent boundary layers. The bulk of turbulence production occurs in mid-layer and transported into the inner and outer layers. The results also reveal that the curvature of separating streamline, separating bubble beneath it as well as the mean velocity and turbulent quantities depend strongly on block geometry.

An experimental study of a steady, incompressible, three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer approaching separation is reported. The flow field external to the boundary layer was deflected laterally by turning vanes so that streamwise flow deceleration occurred simultaneous with cross-flow acceleration. At 21 stations profiles of the mean-velocity components and of the six Reynolds stresses were measured with single- and X-hot-wire probes, which were rotatable around their longitudinal axes. The calibration of the hot wires with respect to magnitude and direction of the velocity vector as well as the method of evaluating the Reynolds stresses from the measured data are described in a separate paper (Müller 1982, hereinafter referred to as II). At each measuring station the wall shear stress was inferred from a Preston-tube measurement as well as from a Clauser chart. With the measured profiles of the mean velocities and of the Reynolds stresses several assumptions used for turbulence modelling were checked for their validity in this flow. For example, eddy viscosities for both tangential directions and the corresponding mixing lengths as well as the ratio of resultant turbulent shear stress to turbulent kinetic energy were derived from the data.
