This study analyzes the variables that influence international competitiveness, both in industrialized and developing countries. Based on rich archival resources, the study explains the intense international competition between European and North American publishers in pursuing Latin American book markets throughout the course of the First Global Economy. The case of Spain provides an opportunity to study the patterns of the internationalization process of a nonleading country and compare them with the strategies developed by German, U.S., French, and British companies. This research sheds light on the importance of social networks and national cultural influences in the internationalization of this singular industry.

Latin American countries were not a part of the earlier draft of the route map of China’s Belt and Road initiative. Through efforts of both sides, starting from the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in May 2017, Latin America has become an indispensable and important participant of the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative. In view of the differences in history and objective circumstances between China and Latin America in terms of histories, cultures, current economic states and development needs etc., policy coordination plays a fundamental role in the China-Latin America cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road initiative. This article explores the four aspects of policy coordination in the BRI context, namely historical background, philosophy, principle and objective. The article notes that the weight of the US, EU and Japan in the global economy is decreasing, and the number of contradictions in the national economies of these countries, on the contrary, is growing. At the same time, the aggregate economic weight of developing countries is increasing. This new paradigm of development of the world economy gives a chance to developing countries, namely China and Latin America, to deepen economic cooperation. China has already become the second largest trading partner and the third largest source of investment for Latin American countries. China also proposes a solution based on its own Chinese experience, which will allow countries from Latin America to further accelerate their economic growth through infrastructure cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. The basic principles of such cooperation are win-win cooperation, shared growth through discussion and collaboration and the essence of policy coordination, etc. It is believed that, on the premise of a high degree of consensus achieved through policy coordination, both China and Latin America will achieve sustainable and efficient cooperation and development under the framework of the Belt and Road initiative.

Shahid Javed Burki’s Changing Perceptions and Altered Realities: Emerging Economies in the 1990s is a collection of his essays and speeches on a variety of economic issues relevant to developing countries. These range from the trend towards open regionalism in the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC) to the challenges of integrating into the global economy faced by small states. Three points in particular are of great help in understanding the nature of the problems faced by emerging economies over the past decade. First, there exist great differences within the developing world and, by extension, in the ranks of the poor. Second, the complexity of the situation demands that domestic institutions in developing countries be made stronger and more efficient. And third, market-based policies, though far from perfect, represent the best available set of solutions to the many problems faced by the developing world.

Abstract: This article seeks to analyze the reactions and comments of followers of official Seventh-day Adventist Church pages on social networks about the production of audiovisual fiction content on the Feliz7play streaming platform. To this end, the article elaborates a socio-theological overview of the conflicting relationship between Adventism and audiovisual fiction, followed by a brief description of the use of audiovisual fiction by Adventists in the North American and Latin American context and, finally, proposes a Netnographic analysis of Adventists’ reaction to audiovisual fiction productions on the Feliz7Play platform through the Adventist official pages on social networks. It is concluded that the theological problems that Adventist culture considers audiovisual fiction to have are a projection of the criticism that the founding discourse elaborated on fiction in literature and theater, which, in turn, has an strong impact on the production of fictional Adventist content today.

Digital Competences mediate the population of vulnerable Latin American contexts. In these there is the need to expand social communication as a way of learning and self-improvement. This research proposes to determine the effects of transfer of digital competences in two types of interaction: university students-adults, adults-schoolchildren. Therefore, two groups of individuals participate in two experimental phases of didactic transfer through the use of social networks, based on the execution of a Research Seed Project and another Project of Professional Practices of Social Responsibility in vulnerable contexts. We found effectiveness in the transfer of Digital Competences in both cases during more than six months of project execution. We report greater predisposition for the acquisition of information, communication, self-evaluation and access to information in adults. The schoolchildren managed to reinforce their skills to apply Digital Safety and Problem Solving, improving notably in this group. This program is seen as part of the improvement of teaching that every school needs as a means of curricular strengthening, whether they are teachers of advanced age or students of the primary stage. We believe that these skills will open up to the professional world with better visionary prospects for developing countries.

Two strategies of economic growth are pointed out: the low road, that is producing more at lower cost and lower wages, with increasingly intensive exploitation of labor and environment, and the high road, that is upgrading capabilities in order to produce better basing on knowledge. Restrictions for developing countries trying to reach global competitiveness are formulated. Special attention is paid to the concept of upgrading and opportunities of joining transnational value chains. The importance of learning and forming social and political institutions for successful upgrading of the economy is stressed.

This paper analyzes the problem of technological backwardness of economy. In many mostly developing countries their economies use obsolete technologies. This can create the illusion that this or that business is prosperous. At the level of international competition, however, it is obvious that these types of firms do not have any chance for success. Retroeconomics as a theory of technological backwardness and its detrimental effect upon a country’s economy is considered in the paper. The role of the government is very important for overcoming the effects of retroeconomy. The phenomenon of retroeconomy is already quite deep-rooted throughout the world and it is essential to consolidate the attention of economists and politicians on this threat.

Reasons of high inequality in the modern world are considered in the article. In developing countries it interacts with underdeveloped markets and inefficient government programs to slow growth, which in turn slows progress in reducing poverty. Increasing reach of global markets makes rising inequality more likely and deepens the gap between rich and poor countries. Because global markets work better for the already rich, we should increase the representation of poor countries in global fora.
