Between Order and Justice: Investments in Africa and Corporate International Responsibility in Swedish Media in the 1960s

This article analyzes how the public relations of multinational companies was affected by the double impact of decolonization and spread of television during the 1960s. It contributes to recent theoretical conceptualizations of corporate social responsibility by adding the dimension of home country stakeholders and the border-crossing character of corporate responsibility. The analysis deals with the changing media representations in Sweden of Swedish-owned firms in Liberia and South Africa before, during, and after what has been called the “postcolonial moment” (1960–1963). In its wake, Swedish industrialists faced a new policy problem: firms in overseas markets were no longer expected to do only what was legal in the host country but also what was considered right in their home country. The analysis follows the debates concerning this issue of corporateinternationalresponsibility throughout the 1960s, and how national business organizations and executives in firms such as the Liberian-American-Swedish Mining Company publicly sought to defend the role of Swedish foreign direct investment in Africa. The business community developed various public relations strategies to engage with its critics, professionalized their media relations, and organized international study tours for unions and politicians.

Corporate Social Responsibility has caught the attention of the business community worldwide because consumer and capital markets now champion or punish a company for its relationship with its environment. But this approach is still new and has several defects: it’s reactive, excessively focused on mass media, it’s not specialized, it confuses Public Relations with Social Responsibility, etc. This shows not only little knowledge of the basic concepts but also of the main reason underlying any Social Responsibility process: a sustainable improvement in the relationship with the population as a foundation for sustainable development. In order to achieve this it is necessary to have clear objectives, an clear definition of the target audience, and well designed action plans. Only then will we be able to assess the success or failure of our intervention.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) earlier applied as corporate philanthropy and has been in practice in India since ages. However, philanthropy in globalised and modern India does not solve the purpose in quantity and quality. Clause 135 of Company Act 2013 created huge hue and cry among the business community in India. As per clause 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, Every company with an annual turnover of 1,000 crore INR ($161 million) and more, or a net worth of 500 crore INR ($80 million) and more, or a net profit as low as five crore INR ($800,000) and more have to spend at least 2% of their average net profit over the previous three years on CSR activities. With the introduction of new Company act 2013 India became the first country in the world to have legislation for compulsory CSR spending. The paper aims at analyzing the motive of making CSR spending mandatory and it also attempts to explain the concept of CSR in the present Indian scenario, the social issues addressed by the Indian corporations, and methodologies adopted by them to address those issues.

The purpose of this article is to examine the influence of corporate social responsibility practices of Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL), Bangladesh and to know the client’s knowledge, feedback, awareness and eagerness towards the CSR activities while choosing a bank. This study also investigates the level of present and expected CSR contribution of this bank. A cross- sectional survey design was used for the study featuring a self administered questionnaire and data were collected from 100 clients at South Surma branch. Data were analyzed using SPSS and the findings revealed that CSR activities played an important role for clients to choose a bank. Most of the clients were aware of CSR program and they had positive reaction to CSR practices of DBBL. Clients also suggested to expand CSR practices and they were willing to contribute for social activities financially. The results show the policy implications for business community, citizen, customers, investors, managers and other stakeholders.

Businesses work in a wide social environment in which they have a responsibility to a range of stakeholders including the community. The term Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to the responsibility that modern business organizations have to creating a healthy and prosperous society. Ethical practices in refractory marketing help marketers distinguish between right and wrong behavior. Adherence to ethics is essential in industrial markets as mutual trust among buyers and sellers is the key to long-term success. Marketing has evolved from a production-centric approach to a societal marketing approach that lays greater emphasis on the ethical issues in marketing. With the advent of globalization, corporations continue to evolve, grow in power, and influence the process of consolidation. Corporations are in positions of power that allow them to do greater damage to others when they act unethically or socially in an irresponsible manner. The rights theory encompasses a variety of ethical philosophies holding that certain human rights are fundamental and must be respected by other humans. The economic theories of the firm cannot be segregated of ethical considerations as they have crucial impact on how the firm concentrates on economic power, formulate the rules of law. Profit maximisation has always been the driving force and an undercurrent behind the development of corporate. But profit is not made in vacuum, it always has an associated cost, some of which is always externalized (Rhee, 2008). Corporate law has an ethical foundation and the debate on values necessarily revolves round the activities of the firm. This research paper on the basis of secondary sources of data collected from reports, research papers and Internet, focuses on corporate social responsibility (CSR) of TATA Group with reference to Tata Krosaki Refractories Ltd, Bajoria Group with reference to IFGL Refractories Ltd (Odisha), OCL Refractories Ltd, Sarvesh Refractories, and Manishree Refractories (Odisha). The study intends to understand the scope of corporate social responsibility and get an insight in CSR and ethical practices in the light of the case study of the refractory industries in Odisha.

Abstract Globally, organizations are increasingly embracing corporate social responsibility (CSR) to strengthen competitive advantage. Although CSR is recognized to be context-sensitive, the literature is still lacking studies that examine CSR in different contexts, particularly non-western ones. Our study adds to a deeper understanding of CSR in Vietnam by identifying the predictors of CSR attitudes of business students. Vietnam has rich cultural, social, and economic characteristics that offer new theoretical perspectives and insights on the contextual nature of CSR. Our findings showed that CSR attitudes related positively to idealism and student seniority, and negatively to materialism and male students. A positive CSR–relativism relationship was uncovered. Spirituality related positively to the importance of CSR to business sustainability and negatively to CSR's importance to short-term competitiveness. The findings have theoretical and practical implications on the understanding and practice of CSR that would benefit CSR researchers, business organizations, and education institutions.

This work firstly aims to develop a sustainability model based on Ibn Haldun’s teaching of sustainability. Religious coloring refers to the spirituality, which is re-discovered in modern ages and transferred to the workplace. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; data collected from Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies were analyzed using structural equation modelling. According to the results, while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR/CS and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that higher lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR/CS score.

Citra perusahaan yang baik di mata publik menjadi salah satu faktor yang harus diperhatikan di tengah persaingan bisnis saat ini. Bagi perusahaan fintech lending yang bergerak pada layanan keuangan dan beroperasional secara online, trust dan citra positif dari pengguna atau calon pengguna menjadi hal yang penting. Membangun trust dan citra positif merupakan fungsi dari public relations dalam sebuah perusahaan. Melalui penelitian ini akan dilihat bagaimana praktisi public relations Investree menjalankan aktivitas PR dalam rangka mengelola citra perusahaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma interpretif dan pendekatan kualitatif, dengan wawancara sebagai metode utama dalam pengumpulan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa posisi PR di Investree sudah dijalankan secara strategis dengan aktivitas PR yang paling dominan dilakukan adalah media relations, customer relations, dan content and brand management. Akan tetapi, aktivitas lainnya seperti community relations, government relations, corporate social responsibility dan lain sebagainya juga dilakukan oleh tim lainnya dalam departemen Marketing & Communications. Selanjutnya, semua tools PR juga telah dimanfaatkan oleh tim PR Investree, mulai dari controlled PR, uncontrolled PR, dan juga semi-controlled PR, termasuk salah satunya adalah media sosial dalam mengelola citra positif di mata publik. The article aggregates a variety of tools aimed to boost awareness and understanding of social responsibility among different groups of shareholders. At the same time the re-search shows a list of tools applicable for public relations (PR) practitioners (not only) to disseminate and promote corporate social responsibility (CSR). This paper emphasizes two groups of tools as qualitative and quantitative. All the tools were analyzed according to the scope of needed activities and interpreted in terms of applicability to the CSR goals.

Corporate Social Responsibility is a continuing commitment by the business community to act ethically and contribute to the economic development of the local community and the wider community, along with the improvement of the living standards of workers and their families (Wibisono 2007). The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of CSR costs on the company’s of net profit on PT. United Tractor, Tbk. This research uses simple linear regression analysis method. The type of data used is quantitative data obtained from secondary data. The results showed that there is no influence between the two variables (corporate social responsibility cost to net income of the company). Based on t-test, t-table> t-count (3,182> -2,074) and significant 0,130 where this value> 0,05 meaning there is no influence between independent variable to dependent variable.Keywords: Cost of Corporate Social Responsibility, Net income


The article deals with highlighting the relevance of the new direction of psychology of business, leadership and communication for the modern labor market. The emphasis has been placed on the fact that the modernization of educational programs promotes Europeanization and improvement of the quality of training so that specialists can operate in intercultural professional environment, and the quality of scientific research leads to constant search in order to ensure the competitiveness of graduates, spread of values and formation of a positive image of the country. The work presents the educational program “Psychology of Business and Management” for the training of specialists in the psychology of interpersonal and business communication, business counseling, psychological assessment of the staff, personnel management, legal support, organizational behavior and applied ethics, prevention of professional deformations, gender differences in the field of management activities; media psychology, psychology of advertising and public relations (PR) etc. Methods for successful formation and development of students’ personal and professional skills (soft skills) demanded by employers in order to provide their preparedness for being employed by business organizations have been offered; the general socio-psychological basics of success in business have been outlined. A system of values needed for leadership and success has been presented. The concepts of “success” and “successfulness” in the business environment have been considered.
