OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: There is no consensus on what constitutes translational research. To effectively support translation of research into practical settings, universities must determine who is involved, in which disciplines, and what results. In addition, it is unclear whether these researchers would see “translational research” as describing their work. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: A survey assessing perceptions, successes, and barriers to the application of research was distributed to faculty, fellows, and graduate students within the University of Michigan. This survey included a question on the definition of translational research. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Investigators of every rank and school participated (n=865), and all schools reported forms of applied research. Over 70% of participants said it was important to use research results beyond academia, and those responses represented diverse successes ranging from product development to artistic endeavors. Common barriers to such as lack of time and funding were also widely experienced. The definitions of translational research were divided between strictly health-oriented or broadly focused application. However, both definitions and familiarity with the term differed by field. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Translation of research is widespread throughout the university, and many would define translational research to include their research discipline. Strategic university policies could benefit society by enhancing translation and application across many disciplines.

The study aimed to identify the reality of knowledge management and obstacles to its implementation and ways to develop it as seen by academics at the universities of Hebron and Alquds Open in Hebron. The study followed the analytical descriptive approach. The study population is composed of academics working at the universities of Hebron and Alquds Open in Hebron Governorate. To collect the data, a questionnaire was used consisting of (60) paragraphs. The sample size was (62) academic. The results indicate that the reality of knowledge management and its obstacles to development was generally high. The results also showed that the level of awareness of the concept of knowledge management was high. , And that knowledge recognition is a feature of modern management. The results also show that the most prominent constraints to knowledge management application are excessive centralization and complex administrative procedures. The results confirmed ways to develop knowledge management application. The results of the study showed that there are significant differences in the reality of knowledge management and the obstacles to its implementation and ways of activating it from the point of view of academics in the universities of Hebron and Alquds Open in Hebron Governorate due to variables :(gender, scientific qualification, years of service, age, university). While there were differences of statistical significance according to variable academic education. In light of the results, the study made a number of recommendations. The most important of these are the following:( The university should promote knowledge management applications through scientific activities and issue journals and publications to disseminate knowledge. The university policies should include supporting scientific research and researchers.

Graduate students in the humanities increasingly view training in the use of digital tools and methodologies as critical to their success. Graduate students' interest in becoming familiar with digital tools often accompanies their awareness of a competitive academic job market, coupled with a recognition that teaching and research positions increasingly call for experience and skills in the Digital Humanities (DH). Likewise, recent debates over DH's role in the future of humanities scholarship have heightened the sense that DH skills can translate to crucial job skills. While many graduate students receive encouragement from faculty to pursue digital scholarship, individual academic departments often have limited resources to prioritize the development of these skills at the expense of existing curricular components. This chapter looks at initiatives at the University of Michigan Library that demonstrate the ways in which subject librarians, in collaboration with data and technology specialist librarians, can fill this gap by creating opportunities for graduate students to develop DH skills.

Librarians are excellent research collaborators, although librarian participation is not usually considered, thereby making access to research funds difficult. The University of Michigan Library became involved in the university’s novel funding program, MCubed, which supported innovative interdisciplinary research on campus, primarily by funding student assistants to work on research projects. This article discusses three different MCubed projects that all benefited from librarian involvement. These projects spanned across many areas from translational research to systematic reviews to digital humanities. Librarian roles ranged from mentoring and project management to literature searching.

In April 2007 David William Cohen and his graduate students held a symposium on the future of African Studies at the University of Michigan. David Cohen, two graduate students—Isabelle de Rezende and Clapperton Mavhunga—as well as five invited speakers with different disciplinary backgrounds—Pius Adesanmi, Tim Burke, Jennifer Cole, Paul Zeleza, and myself—contributed papers. The purpose of the conference, entitled “2020: Re-Envisioning African Studies,” was twofold. First, it appeared timely to reflect yet again on the state of African Studies in disciplinary-based and area studies departments. Second, David Cohen had the idea of 2020 representing both the utopia of ideal vision and the concrete question of what the field might look like when the graduate students participating might conceive their second book projects. What follows are the thoughts—not a list of solutions—by a historian who has studied in three academic contexts—Germany, Zimbabwe, Britain—who has taught in as many—Britain, Germany, USA—and who has gathered experience both in area and disciplinary-based departments.Finding one's intellectual home in area studies is problematic for a range of reasons, not least for the exoticization and marginalization of non-western world regions in the global flows of ideas. At the same time, African Studies make for a comfortable sense of belonging. This is a community of scholars who provide a productive and engaging, if at times impassioned, conversation with colleagues across disciplinary boundaries, time periods, and the great diversity of African and diasporic societies and regions. The question is: what place does the historical discipline occupy within this field, and what is its future?

The National Graduate Education Comprehensive Fees Policy has been in operation for more than five years since the fall semester of 2014, which is long enough to evaluate the effectiveness of the policy. Base on the existing research results, this paper proposes to adopt the core index of graduate students' scientific research ability—the level and quantity of published papers to evaluate the implementation effect of this policy, take GF University as an example to analyze the construction of the university's award and scholarship system, and make quantitative analysis of the academic graduate students' published papers. It finds that the implementation effect of scholarship system is not obvious. Therefore, this paper analyzes the reasons and puts forward the relevant countermeasures.

Abstract: This chapter describes how the University of Michigan School of Social Work’s Technical Assistance Center (UMSSW/TAC) developed its theory of change as a partner in the Skillman Foundation-funded Detroit Good Neighborhoods initiative. The definition of a theory of change accepted was of “a specification of what must be done to achieve the desired goals, what other important impacts may also be anticipated, and how these goals and impacts would be generated.” The chapter discusses the processes in the creation of iterations of Foundation and UMSSW/TAC theories of change. The chapter concludes with the benefits, limitations, issues, and challenges of aligning logic models with the varied expectations and goals of residents, funding foundations, and university partners.

Abstract Introduction: Access to qualified biostatisticians to provide input on research design and statistical considerations is critical for high-quality clinical and translational research. At diverse health science institutions, like the University of Michigan (U-M), biostatistical collaborators are scattered across the campus. This model can isolate applied statisticians, analysts, and epidemiologists from each other, which may negatively affect their career development and job satisfaction, and inhibits access to optimal biostatistical support for researchers. Furthermore, in the era of modern, complex translational research, it is imperative to elevate biostatistical expertise by offering innovative training. Methods: The Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research established an Applied Biostatistical Sciences (ABS) network that is a campus-wide community of staff and faculty statisticians, epidemiologists, data scientists, and researchers, with the intention of supporting both researchers and biostatisticians, while promoting high-quality clinical and translational research. Results: Since its inception in early 2018, the ABS Network has grown to several hundred faculty and staff members across a range of health and research disciplines. The ABS Network offers free trainings on innovative methods and tools in the biostatistical field, a web-based portal with resources and training lectures, and connections to U-M faculty and/or staff members for consultation and collaboration. Conclusions: Although challenging, if approached strategically, the creation of a collaboration network of biostatisticians can be accomplished. Furthermore, the process can be adopted and implemented for establishing collaboration with any network of professionals with common interests across different disciplines and professional fields regardless of size.
