Indonesia on the fifth ranks in the world considering of accident number, after China, India, Afghanistan, and Nigeria, where East Java is the province that has the highest accident in Indonesia. The city of Surabaya as the Capital of East Java Province automatically became the centre of government activities, giving rise to transportation activities that indirectly had an impact on accidents. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research to obtain the accident rate and the location of black site in the city of Surabaya. In addition, considering that productive age including junior high school (SMP) is the highest contributor on the accidents, the level of understanding of junior high school students on traffic regulations needs to be analysed. From the data obtained at IRSMS, it can be seen that five roads in Surabaya were the highest contributors to accidents in Surabaya, namely Mastrip, Diponegoro, A. Yani, Kenjeran, and Ir. Soekarno, where the five roads are inter-city connecting roads that blend with the road in the city. In addition, from the interview data, there was a relationship between awareness of traffic behaviour and willingness to protect themselves.

Many precious lives are lost due to road accidents because of over speeding and negligent driving every day. This is the matter of great concern for departments that deal with road safety and for the citizens. It is estimated that 80% of crashes and 65% of near collisions are due to driver’s lack of attention to traffic for three seconds before the event. The number of road crash deaths has increased by 31% from 2007 to 2017. As per the survey on the road accidents in India, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 1, 50,785 people were killed and another 4, 94,624 were injured in 4, 80,652 road crashes in India in 2016. Now day’s accidents are taking place at large scale. Majority of the accidents occurs due to the over speeding of vehicles, though there are speed limiting boards placed at the roadside of highways also at the road side in the city. But none of vehicles (drivers) follows the speed mentioned in the speed limit boards, due to which accidents occurs.

Vehicular Ad Hoc NETworks (VANET) has turn up as a stand to support intelligent vehicles communication, transport safety and performance.Road accidents and traffic congestion are the significant issues of metropolitan territories. In spite of the fact that endless arrangements are given for these issues, still there is no fitting answer for street mishap recognition. Likewise, because of the deferral in arriving at the emergency vehicle to the mishap area and accordingly the gridlock in the middle of the mishap area and clinic expands the probabilities of the passing of the person in question. Thus, it is needed to give handheld answer for the general public. This paper introduces a handheld solution to reduce the loss of life due to accidents and the time taken by the ambulance to reach the hospital. First, the proposed system finds out the road accidents automatically with the help of sensors in intelligent vehicles.  Second, an alert is sent to all nearby hospitals after the road accident. This system maintains a database server which holds all hospital details in around the city. A GPS or GSM gadget in the concerned vehicle will send the area character of the mishap to the close by medical clinics through primary worker and afterward a rescue vehicle from very closest clinic is shipped off the mishap spot. Alongside these, there would be an effect of traffic inside the way of the emergency vehicle utilizing RF correspondence. This will limit the hour of ambulances to arrive at the clinic.Third, this system maintains another database for all kind of mechanical services. This system provides support to the roadsiders while the vehicle got breakdown or any other service issues in the vehicle. It also saves the time of the driver and unnecessary delay. Altogether, this system provides the appropriate handheld solution to the vehicle drivers and the society.

Hill roads in Nepal are comprised of critical geometry and limited roadway clearances. It causes high number of runoff roadway type of accidents with single vehicle. These accidents often carry huge number of fatalities and severe injuries. Installation of crash barriers is the most effective way of preventing such accidents along hill roads. However, the existing practice of construction of crash barriers does not show the satisfactory results. Therefore, this research aimed at the evaluation of typical crash barriers constructed along the valley side of highway. Analysis of the road accident of Malekhu-Kurintar section of Prithvi Highway record shows that this section has relatively higher accident rate and most of the accidents are runoff roadway type. Further, these accidents are mainly caused due to either the absence or the failure of the crash barriers along the valley side of the highway. On the basis of field records, kinetic energy absorbed by the crash barriers and their deflections was investigated by application of computer based analysis tool ABAQUS V6.10. It has given satisfactory results on the deflection of W-beam and plum concrete barriers due to the impact of vehicle moving in various range of speed.

Road accident prediction plays an important role in accessing and improving the road safety. Fuzzy logic is one of the popular techniques in the broad field of artificial intelligence and ability to improve performance similar to human reasoning and describe complex systems in linguistic terms instead of numerical values. In this study, a system was established based on Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) in which output data such as traffic Accident Rate (AR) and input data such as various highway geometric parameters. The study was conducted on two road segment from plain and rolling terrain highway and two road segments from hilly and mountainous terrain highway within the rural area of the Indian Territory. Two Highway Accident Rate Prediction Models (HARPMPRT and HARPMHMT) were developed due to the complexity of geometric parameters of rural highway on different terrain conditions which takes horizontal radius, superelevation, K-value, vertical grade and visibility as input variables and Accident Rate (AR) as output variables. The findings show that the proposed model can be effectively applied as a useful Road Safety tool capable of identifying risk factors related to the characteristics of the road and great support to the decision making of incident management in Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Gelendzhik is the resort town, there aren't a lot of industrial enterprises here. The main pollutant is transport. The work purpose is the assessment of a condition of the artificial landings of a pine located along the Federal highway "Don" and landings, which is nearly the sea coast. Researches were conducted to a standard technique of the General vital state (A. S. Bogolyubov). The assessment of a condition of pines was carried out during 6 years: from 2010 to 2015. For carrying out research we used 6 experimental grounds on the Markotkhsky spine and 2 control grounds within the town. We investigated 24 trees on each platform, middle age of the trees were 30 - 40 years. Results. 1. The condition of trees in the pine forests located in immediate proximity with the Federal highway "Don" (No. 1, 2, 3) is unsatisfactory. As even weak influences of the majority of atmospheric gaseous pollutants (sulphurous gas, nitrogen oxides, etc.) give effect of a necrosis and hloroz of pine needles, the condition of pines is connected with technogenic pollution. So near the Federal highway "Don" the air environment is strongly polluted by exhaust gases. Information of 2012 confirm that negative influence of the route on Markotkh's vegetation decreases at reduction of load of the route. 2. On the sites located above on a slope (No. 4,5,6) thanks to remoteness and the wind mode intensity of influence of pollutants is lower and a condition of pines the quite satisfactory. 3. Trees on the sites located near the sea (No. 7,8) are in a good shape. Small deterioration of a state is noted in very droughty years. Conclusion. Results of six years' research show that the condition of the plantings which are in close proximity with the road worsens. It is explained by increase in intensity of the movement on the road, especially during a resort season. Gelendzhik is the city with a good ecological shape, but the damage to environment is already caused. If not to take measures, we can lose a unique part of the nature in the future, recreate it will be impossible. Measures of reduction of negative impact of exhaust gases were offered. Results of researches are transferred to ecological department of the City administration of Gelendzhik.

Retracing in his novel the labyrinthine journey that leads Oedipus from the place of his abomination (Thebes) to the city of his future glory (Colonus), Henry Bauchau fills the emptiness between Sophocles’s Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus. Bauchau’s hero, a powerful king, loses everything and stabs his eyes out when the cruel truth about his real identity is revealed. Blind, homeless, devoid of meaning of life, Oedipus leaves on a journey to pass away anywhere. However, his way to death turns out to be, thanks to benevolent presence of others and art’s liberating power, the road to personal elucidation. The story of Bauchau’s Oedipus, who finally recognizes himself as a truly human, is based therefore on the passage between absence and presence, between darkness and lucidity, on the union of contradictions which symbolize the complexity of human nature. This paper attempts to analyse different representations of absence in Bauchau’s novel. Afterwards, the article focuses on the ways which facilitate Oedipus’s road leading from depersonalization to rediscovery of his own identity.

A comparative case study (2017–2020) was conducted to identify demographic, social, medico-legal, and toxicological variables associated with non-fatal accidents in driving under the influence (DUI) subjects. A second aim was to identify the factors predictive of substance use disorders among subjects. Drivers charged with alcohol DUI (blood alcohol concentration (BAC) > 0.5) and/or psychoactive substance DUI were included; cases included those involved in an accident while intoxicated, and the comparison group included DUI offenders negative for road accident involvement. Significance was determined by chi-square and Mann–Whitney tests. To prevent confounding effects, a multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was performed. Our sample encompassed 882 subjects (381 in the case group and 501 in the comparison group). Parameters such as psychoactive substances and BAC at the time of the road crash/DUI and the day of the week, when subjects were involved in the road accident or found DUI, resulted in significant differences ( p < 0.01) between groups. The model’s independent variables of BAC > 1.5 g/L ( p = 0.013), BAC > 2.5 g/L ( p < 0.001), and concurrent alcohol and psychoactive substance use ( p < 0.001) were independent risk factors for an accident. Smoking >20 cigarettes/day was an independent risk factor for unfitness to drive ( p < 0.01). Unfitness to drive was based primarily on ethyl glucuronide levels >30 pg/mg. Our results suggest a detailed assessment of DUI subjects with variables associated with accidents (BAC > 1.5 g/L and concurrent intake of psychoactive substances). Hair analysis, including ethylglucuronide (EtG) concentration, should be always performed. Based on our results, nicotine use should be investigated in cases of driving license regranting.
