In a prior publication, we described a previously unknown eye movement phenomenon during the execution of actively performed multiaxial rotations in high level gymnasts. This phenomenon was consistently observed during the phase of fast free flight rotations and was marked by a prolonged and complete suppression of nystagmus and gaze stabilizing “environment referenced eye movements” (EREM; such as the vestibulo-ocular reflex, optokinetic reflex, smooth pursuit and others). Instead, these eye movements were coupled with intersegmental body movements. We have therefore called it “spinal motor-coupled eye movements” (SCEM) and have interpreted the phenomenon to likely be caused by anti-compensatory functions of more proprioceptive mediated reflexes and perhaps other mechanisms (e.g., top-down regulation as part of a motor plan) to effectively cope with a new-orientation in space, undisturbed by EREM functions. In the phase before landing, the phenomenon was replaced again by the known gaze-stabilizing EREM functions. The present study specifically evaluated long-term measures of vestibulo-ocular reflex functions (VOR) in high level gymnasts and controls during both passively driven monoaxial rotations and context-specific multiaxial somersault simulations in a vestibular lab. This approach provided further insights into the possible roles of adaptive or mental influences concerning the VOR function and how they are associated with the described phenomenon of SCEM. Results showed high inter-individual variability of VOR function in both gymnasts and controls, but no systematic adaptation of the VOR in gymnasts, neither compared to controls nor over a period of three years. This might generally support the hypothesis that the phenomenon of SCEM might indeed be driven more by proprioceptively mediated and situationally dominant eye movement functions than by adaptative processes of the VOR.

This study was intended to test the adaptive plasticity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex before and after either a midsagittal or parasagittal incision in the brainstem. Eye movements were measured with the electromagnetic search coil technique during the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VORD) in the dark, the optokinetic reflex (OKN), and the visuo-vestibular adaptive training procedure. Two types of visual-vestibular combined stimulation were applied by means of low frequency stimuli (0.05 to 0.10 Hz). In order to increase or decrease the VORD gain, the optokinetic drum was oscillated either 180∘ out-of-phase or in-phase with the vestibular stimulus turntable. This “training” procedure was applied for 4 hours. Initial measurements of the VORD were normal with a mean gain value of 0.92 ± 0.08. After 4 hours of “training” with the out-of-phase condition (180∘), VORD gain reached mean values of 1.33 ± 0.11 (n = 6 cats). In the in-phase combination, the mean VORD gain decreased from 1.0 to 0.63 ± 0.02 (n = 2 cats). No significant change of VORD phase was found in any of the cats. Midsagittal or parasagittal pontomedullary brainstem incisions were performed in 4 cats. Recovery of the VOR was tested on the 2nd, 7th, and 30th day after operation. After the 30th day, recovery of the VORD gain stabilized at about 66% of the initial preoperative value. At this stage of the recovery, the optokinetic response (OKN) of the midsagittal-Iesioned cats was practically normal: in the parasagittal-Jesioned cats, the postoperative OKN responses were asymmetric. After stabilization of recovery, lesioned cats were trained with the same adaptation procedure. Although the direct effect of the visuo-vestibular combined stimulation during the training was still operative in all lesioned cats, the adaptive plasticity was completely abolished by the lesions. These results suggest that the commissural brainstem network may play a crucial role in the acquisition of the forced VOR adaptation.

To maintain clear vision, the images on the retina must remain reasonably stable. Head movements are generally dealt with successfully by counter-rotation of the eyes induced by the combined actions of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and the optokinetic reflex. A problem of importance relates to the value of the so-called intrinsic gain of the VOR (VORG) in man, and how this gain is modulated to provide appropriate eye movements. We have studied these problems in two situations: 1. fixation of a stationary object of the visual space while the head moves; 2. fixation of an object moving with the head. These two situations were compared to a basic condition in which no visual target was allowed in order to induce “pure” VOR. Eye movements were recorded in seated subjects during stationary sinusoidal and transient rotations around the vertical axis. Subjects were in total darkness (DARK condition) and involved in mental arithmetic. Alternatively, they were provided with a small foveal target, either fixed with respect to earth (earth-fixed target: EFT condition), or moving with them (chair-fixed-target: CFT condition). The stationary rotation experiment was used as baseline for the ensuing experiment and yielded control data in agreement with the literature. In all 3 visual conditions, typical responses to transient rotations were rigorously identical during the first 200 ms. They showed, sequentially, a 16-ms delay of the eye behind the head and a rapid increase in eye velocity during 75 to 80 ms, after which the average VORG was 0.9 ± 0.15. During the following 50 to 100 ms, the gain remained around 0.9 in all three conditions. Beyond 200 ms, the VORG remained around 0.9 in DARK and increased slowly towards 1 or decreased towards zero in the EFT and CFT conditions, respectively. The time-course of the later events suggests that visual tracking mechanisms came into play to reduce retinal slip through smooth pursuit, and position error through saccades. Our data also show that in total darkness VORG is set to 0.9 in man. Lower values reported in the literature essentially reflect predictive properties of the vestibulo-ocular mechanism, particularly evident when the input signal is a sinewave.

This study was undertaken in order to clarify the effects of infrasound on vestibular functions by comparing observations of eye movement under exposure to infrasound and audible noise. Twenty-five healthy males were exposed to a wide octave-band noise, (approx. 125 Hz to 4kHz) or to 16 Hz or 5 Hz at 95 dB for 3 minutes. Their involuntary eye movement with the eyes visually fixed in the horizontal direction was measured before and during exposure with their eyes open and closed. The extent of eye movement before the exposure was significantly greater with eyes closed than with eyes open. This difference was intensified by 5-Hz exposure, but exposure to the noise of 16-Hz infrasound had no effect. The power percentage in the low frequency-band, determined by spectral analysis of the eye movement, was significantly greater with eyes closed than with eyes open before the exposure. This increase in the power percentage in the low frequency-band was reinforced by the 16- and 5-Hz exposures, while no effect was observed upon exposure to the noise. These results suggest that the potential of the vestibulo-ocular reflex was increased upon exposure to infrasound, regardless of whether or not the subjects perceived any sensation.

Head rotation, translation, and tilt with respect to a gravitational field elicit reflexive eye movements that partially stabilize images of Earth-fixed objects on the retinas of humans and other vertebrates. Compared with the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex, responses to translation and tilt, collectively called the otolith-ocular reflex (OOR), are less completely characterized, typically smaller, generally disconjugate (different for the 2 eyes) and more complicated in their relationship to the natural stimuli that elicit them. We measured binocular 3-dimensional OOR responses of 6 alert normal chinchillas in darkness during whole body tilts around 16 Earth-horizontal axes and translations along 21 axes in horizontal, coronal, and sagittal planes. Ocular countertilt responses to 40-s whole body tilts about Earth-horizontal axes grew linearly with head tilt amplitude, but responses were disconjugate, with each eye’s response greatest for whole body tilts about axes near the other eye’s resting line of sight. OOR response magnitude during 1-Hz sinusoidal whole body translations along Earth-horizontal axes also grew with stimulus amplitude. Translational OOR responses were similarly disconjugate, with each eye’s response greatest for whole body translations along its resting line of sight. Responses to Earth-horizontal translation were similar to those that would be expected for tilts that would cause a similar peak deviation of the gravitoinertial acceleration (GIA) vector with respect to the head, consistent with the “perceived tilt” model of the OOR. However, that model poorly fit responses to translations along non-Earth-horizontal axes and was insufficient to explain why responses are larger for the eye toward which the GIA vector deviates. NEW & NOTEWORTHY As the first in a pair of papers on Binocular 3D Otolith-Ocular Reflexes, this paper characterizes binocular 3D eye movements in normal chinchillas during tilts and translations. The eye movement responses were used to create a data set to fully define the normal otolith-ocular reflexes in chinchillas. This data set provides the foundation to use otolith-ocular reflexes to back-project direction and magnitude of eye movement to predict tilt axis as discussed in the companion paper.
