This study aims to discuss and analyze strategies developed by two companies to protect their market share to front the threat of new competitors. A multiple case study was the method undertaken, and two companies were analyzed: a supermarket network and an educational institution. For the results to be analyzed a comparative study was developed, including the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) and the environmental trends in which companies operate (PEST). The data from PEST was classified together with the SWOT analysis, creating a SWOT/PEST matrix for joint analysis of both methods. Consequently, it should be noted that the use of strategies based on strengthening the brand to protect ones market is effective, since it is accompanied by actions that also focus on the variable price, specifically when new competitors adopt aggressive pricing policies.

This research examines the impact of parking pricing and parking availability on potential travel mode substitution among current drivers, in four case study areas in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). It serves to evaluate opportunities to decrease private vehicle usage among the GTA’s workforce. More specifically, the objective of this study is to analyze whether and to what extent parking pricing and parking availability alter drivers’ willingness to change their mode of transportation. Results from ordered logit models demonstrated that a driver’s willingness to change their mode of transportation was statistically correlated with parking cost and parking availability. Parking availability also impacted the correlation between parking pricing and drivers' willingness to change their mode of transportation. The results from this MRP suggests that interventions focused on reducing driving for commuting purposes may focus on changing parking pricing, but depending on the availability of parking, the impacts of such policy/ program may be different.

Abstract. Finding ways to improve the efficiency in water usage is one of the most important challenges in integrated water resources management. One of the most promising solutions is the use of scarcity-based pricing policies. This contribution presents a procedure to design efficient pricing policies based on the opportunity cost of water at the basin scale. Time series of the marginal value of water are obtained using a stochastic hydro-economic model. Those series are then post-processed to define step pricing policies, which depend on the state of the system at each time step. The case study of the Mijares River basin system (Spain) is used to illustrate the method. The results show that the application of scarcity-based pricing policies increases the economic efficiency of water use in the basin, allocating water to the highest-value uses and generating an incentive for water conservation during the scarcity periods. The resulting benefits are close to those obtained with the economically optimal decisions.
