The Community Champions program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing provides motivated nursing students with opportunities to partner with the greater Philadelphia community and engage in hands-on learning. With several thriving initiatives, students participate in service learning outside of the classroom, which ultimately strengthens their nursing and leadership skills. Students work to improve health and health education for people of all ages. These experiences help nursing students better understand the social determinants of health and how they impact community members. Dedicated faculty members assist in guiding the students, who work collaboratively to exchange ideas and methods. This program not only has an effect on the community, but also has a profound impact on the students that participate.

Objective: to learn about the social representation of nursing students about the sexuality of elders with dementia. Methods: qualitative study, based on the Theory of Social Representations, developed with 20 Nursing Graduation students from a Brazilian higher education institution. Data was collected through a focal group, processed in the software IRAMUTEQ and analyzed using a Descending Hierarchical Classification. Results: four semantic classes emerged: Sexuality as a right, The theme was insufficient in graduation, Meanings attributed to sexuality, and Care from the perspective of students. Conclusion: the study showed that the nursing students investigated had polysemic representations about the sexuality of elders with dementia, among which discriminatory and stigmatizing conceptions stood out, socially constructed and anchored in common sense.

Our article explores orthorexia nervosa (ON)—an extreme fixation with healthy eating—from a social construction perspective. Interviews with people self-identified as “obsessed” with healthy eating or having ON (“Identifiers”) and nonmedical professionals working with ON (“Professionals”) were comparatively analyzed, along with orthorexia threads from an eating disorder website (“Posters”). Participants made sense of and rationalized their attitudes and feelings concerning healthy eating and aligned themselves according to their interests. Identifiers and Posters applauded “healthy eating” and regarded consumption of “impure” foods as leading to ill-health. Some framed their dietary discipline within an ethically motivated lifestyle, while others were preoccupied with appearance or weight management. Professionals expressed concern for, and disapproval of, extreme views and behaviors in clients and parental and social influences supporting them. Debates surrounding orthorexic practices are tangled; some individuals need help, yet dangers lie in over medicalizing or “troubling” what may be a preferred lifestyle.

ABSTRACTObjective: to examine the circumstances of the establishment Directory Jurandyr Manfredini Scholar at the School of Nursing Alfredo Pinto between 1955 and 1957. Methods: study historical and social and had as perspective the micro history, based on the documentary analysis and the social thought of Pierre Bourdieu. Results: in May of 1955 the Board Scholar at the School of Nursing Alfredo Pinto was named Jurandyr Manfredini, the season, and a doctor of authorized spokespersons of psychiatry headed the National Office of Mental Diseases, organ by which the school was conditional. Conclusion: the creation of the Academic Directory established itself as a new area of symbolic struggle, hitherto absent from the administrative and educational challenges faced by the Direction School. With the approach of the nursing students and leaders of student movement created the conditions to change the rules and regularities of political domination enrolled in school, this fact meant a victory in keeping the spirit of struggle in favor of the student who already has the participation in these discussions on education, the academic routine, the nurses, and social and political life of the Brazilian season. Métodos: estudo histórico-social na perspectiva da micro-história, baseado na análise documental e no pensamento social de Pierre Bourdieu. Resultados: em maio de 1955 o Diretório Acadêmico da Escola de Enfermagem Alfredo Pinto foi denominado Jurandyr Manfredini, a época, médico e um dos porta-vozes autorizados da psiquiatria dirigia o Serviço Nacional de Doenças Mentais, órgão pelo qual a Escola estava subordinada. Conclusão: a criação do Diretório Acadêmico constituiu-se como um novo espaço de luta simbólica, até então ausente dos desafios administrativos e pedagógicos enfrentados pela Direção da Escola. Com a aproximação dos alunos de enfermagem as lideranças do movimento estudantil foram criadas as condições para se alterar as regras e regularidades políticas de dominação inscritas na Escola, tal fato significou uma vitória na manutenção do espírito de luta a favor do estudante já que possibilitou a participação desses em discussões relativas ao ensino, o cotidiano acadêmico, a enfermagem, e vida social e política brasileira da época. Resultados: en mayo de 1955, el Directorio Académico de la Escuela de Enfermería Alfredo Pinto fue nombrado Jurandyr Manfredini, en aquél momento, médico y un de los portavoces autorizados de la psiquiatría, a cargo de la Oficina Nacional de las Enfermedades Mentales, órgano mediante el cual la escuela estaba subordinada. Conclusión: la creación del Directorio Académico estableció un nuevo campo de lucha simbólica, hasta entonces ausente en los retos administrativos y desafíos educativos que enfrentaba la Dirección de la Escuela. Con el acercamiento de los estudiantes de enfermería a los dirigentes del movimiento estudiantil fueron creadas las condiciones para cambiar las reglas y regularidades de la dominación política vigentes en la escuela. Este hecho significó una victoria para mantener el espíritu de lucha en favor de los estudiantes, ya que posibilitó la participación de ellos en los debates sobre la enseñanza, la rutina académica, la enfermería, y la vida social y política brasileña de la época. Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate nursing students’ perceptions of their educational environment in a private college. Perceptions were compared between genders and 2 bachelor’s programs. Methods: A total of 219 students participated in this study, drawn from the Generic Bachelor of Science in Nursing (GBSN) and the Post-Registered Nurse Bachelor of Science in Nursing (PRBSN) programs of the Shifa College of Nursing, Islamabad, Pakistan. The Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure was utilized for data collection. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate total scores, as well as means and standard deviations, and the t-test was applied for comparisons according to program and gender. Results: The overall total mean score (119 of 200) is suggestive of more positive than negative perceptions of the educational environment. The mean score of 13 of 28 on the social self-perception subscale suggests that the social environment was felt to be ‘not a nice place.’ The t-test revealed more positive perceptions among students enrolled in the PRBSN program (P<0.0001) than among those enrolled in the GBSN program and more positive perceptions among female students than among male students (P<0.0001). Conclusion: Commonalities and differences were found in the perceptions of the nursing students. Both positive and negative perceptions were reported; the overall sense of a positive environment was present, but the social component requires immediate attention, along with other unsatisfactory components. Establishing a supportive environment conducive to competence-based learning would play an important role in bringing desirable changes to the educational environment.

AbstractResearch on decision making has mainly been based on economic models that have tried to downplay the overall context of decision-making situations. When we look into the social influences on decision making we realize it is crucial that we bring the issue of context back into the spotlight. In the present paper we explore the methodological foundations of selected qualitative approaches for studying social influences on decision-making, focusing especially on their strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that this area has great potential for further research providing academic rigor is maintained when using qualitative methods.
