What are the consequences of lay beliefs about how things are made? In this article, we describe a Western folk theory of artifact creation, highlighting how intuitive dualism regarding mental and physical labor (i.e., folk psychology) can lead to the perceived transmission of properties from makers to material artifacts (i.e., folk physics), and affect people’s interactions with material artifacts. We show how this folk theory structures the conceptual domain of material artifacts by differentiating the contemporary lay concepts of art/craft and industrial production, and how it influences people’s evaluations of different types of artifacts and their makers. We propose that the folk theory and lay concepts of art/craft and industrial production are best understood within a specific sociohistorical context, and review potential sources of cross-cultural and cross-temporal variation. We conclude by making recommendations for future research and examining the implications for promoting environmental sustainability and social justice in production systems.

ResumenEl modelo industrial de producción de alimentos ha incentivado la emergencia de cadenas agrarias alternativas. Estas suponen modelos de producción fuertemente vinculados al territorio y tienen la finalidad de transitar desde la producción industrial a la captura de valor por medio de sistemas de producción que garanticen la seguridad y soberanía alimentaria. Esta investigación analiza el funcionamiento de la agricultura orgánica en Chile, en tanto producción agraria no convencional, con la finalidad de perfilar su desarrollo como una estrategia de captura de valor y producción de alimentos saludables especialmente para pequeños productores agrarios. Se busca visibilizar modelos de producción que reconectan el flujo de producción-circulación-consumo a través de un mecanismo de gobernanza que posibilite la captura de valor en el territorio.AbstractThe current judgement of the agro-food industrial production has encouraged the emergence of alternative agro-food chains. These involves production models strongly linked to the territory, and that aim to transition from industrial production to capture value through production systems that ensure food security and sovereignty. This research analyzes the performance of organic agriculture in Chile, while unconventional agricultural production, in order to shape its development as a strategy to capture value and healthy food production especially for small farmers in order to visualize models production reconnect the production circulation-consumption through a governance mechanism that enables the capture of value in the territory.

In the field of alternative energy sources there is an argue in the comparison of its effects on the benefits and disadvantages to the economics and the environment. New studies are born which are in contradiction with each other. The demand for bioenergy feedstock is growing rapidly however there are the environmental problems caused by the extending energy crop plantations. There is such a significant need for land to grow traditional energy crops on (rape, soy, palm-oil, sugarcane, etc.) that the food purpose agricultural capacity could be in danger. Probably the extensivelygrowing energy crops play a role in the very high prices of food. In some countries like China for example laws prohibit the use of food based crops such as corn for energie production. In the case of corn based ethanol production the cost only for the feedstock itself is over 60% of the whole preparation costs which significantly effects the entire economy of the energy productions process.The microalgaes however have a huge biotechnological potential and their production is notably cheaper then the traditionaly grown food crops growing expenses. They play a significant role as feedstocks in todays industrial production in such fields as comestible production, cosmetics, pharmaceutics and biotechnology especially in biofule production. In the field of economy the major aspects here are also the technological designsand the construction. For the future industrial production the closed type systems seem to have more advantages compared to the open, pond-type systems. For high value material production the more innovative and more easily developed closed photobioreactors are the profitable regardless the vast techological designs used in the construction.

Abstract Background The factors affecting host-pathogen ecology in terms of the microbiome remain poorly studied. Chickens are a key source of protein with gut health heavily dependent on the complex microbiome which has key roles in nutrient assimilation and vitamin and amino acid biosynthesis. The chicken gut microbiome may be influenced by extrinsic production system parameters such as Placement Birds/m2 (stocking density), feed type and additives. Such parameters, in addition to on-farm biosecurity may influence performance and also pathogenic bacterial numbers such as Campylobacter. In this study, three different production systems ‘Normal’ (N), ‘Higher Welfare’ (HW) and ‘Omega-3 Higher Welfare’ (O) were investigated in an industrial farm environment at day 7 and day 30 with a range of extrinsic parameters correlating performance with microbial dynamics and Campylobacter presence. Results Our data identified production system N as significantly dissimilar from production systems HW and O when comparing the prevalence of genera. An increase in Placement Birds/m2 density led to a decrease in environmental pressure influencing the microbial community structure. Prevalence of genera, such as Eisenbergiella within HW and O, and likewise Alistipes within N were representative. These genera have roles directly relating to energy metabolism, amino acid, nucleotide and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) utilisation. Thus, an association exists between consistent and differentiating parameters of the production systems that affect feed utilisation, leading to competitive exclusion of genera based on competition for nutrients and other factors. Campylobacter was identified within specific production system and presence was linked with the increased diversity and increased environmental pressure on microbial community structure. Addition of Omega-3 though did alter prevalence of specific genera, in our analysis did not differentiate itself from HW production system. However, Omega-3 was linked with a positive impact on weight gain. Conclusions Overall, our results show that microbial communities in different industrial production systems are deterministic in elucidating the underlying biological confounders, and these recommendations are transferable to farm practices and diet manipulation leading to improved performance and better intervention strategies against Campylobacter within the food chain.

Στα πρώτα στάδια της διατριβής αναλύεται η θεωρητική άποψη της διαχείρισης της αλλαγής στην οργάνωση της βιομηχανικής παραγωγής με τα κρίσιμα στοιχεία της, τα οποία ορίζονται ως οι «Τέσσερις Διαστάσεις της Αλλαγής»: Οργανωτική κουλτούρα, Διαχείριση ανθρώπινου δυναμικού, Οργανωτική δομή, Συστήματα και τεχνικές για την επιτυχή οργανωτική μετάβαση. Μετά την εξέταση των τεσσάρων διαστάσεων για οργανωτικές αλλαγές, αναλύονται οι διαφορές μεταξύ Ιαπωνικής και Ευρωπαϊκής βιομηχανικής κουλτούρας προκειμένου να αντληθούν κάποια χρήσιμα συμπεράσματα. Η εξέταση του θέματος μας οδηγεί να αναλύσουμε με μεγαλύτερη σαφήνεια τη σωστή προσέγγιση της διαχείρισης των αλλαγών στην πράξη με την εφαρμογή ενός ερωτηματολογίου σε πέντε κλίμακες σε μια Ελληνική μικρομεσαία βιομηχανία (50 Εργαζόμενοι).
