Bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Sparassis crispa collected from North Western Himalayan region of India were analyzed. Phenolic content 11.14±0.08 mg tannic acid equivalent per g of the extract and flavonoids 1.96±04 mg catechin equivalent per g of the extract were recorded to be the major antioxidant components in this wild edible mushroom. Significant antioxidant efficiency on inhibition of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was observed when compared to standard antioxidant like L-ascorbic acid. IC50 value of the extract was 2.11 mg/mL. The findings suggest S. crispa as an easily accessible source of natural antioxidants.

Increased side toxicities and development of drug resistance are the major concern for the cancer chemotherapy using synthetic drugs. Therefore, identification of novel natural antioxidants with potential therapeutic efficacies is important. In the present study, we have examined how the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of vialinin A, a p-terphenyl compound derived from Chinese edible mushroomT. terrestrisandT. vialis, prevents human umbilical vascular endothelial cell (HUVEC) neovascularization in vitro and in vivo models. Pretreatment of HUVECs with vialinin A prevents vascular endothelial growth factor- (VEGF) induced HUVEC cell growth in a dose-dependent manner. Further, vialinin A also inhibits VEGF-induced migration as well as tube formation of HUVECs. Treatment of HUVECs prevents VEGF-induced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) and also inhibits VEGF-induced NF-κB nuclear translocation as well as DNA-binding activity. The VEGF-induced release of various angiogenic cytokines and chemokines in HUVECs was also significantly blunted by vialinin A. Most importantly, in a mouse model of Matrigel plug assay, vialinin A prevents the formation of new blood vessels and the expression of CD31 and vWF. Thus, our results indicate a novel role of vialinin A in the prevention of neovascularization and suggest that anticancer effects of vialinin A could be mediated through its potent antioxidant and antiangiogenic properties.

Seaweeds waste is a main oceanic nonproductive material in related industries. In this study, it was utilized for incubation of Cantharellus sp., a popular edible mushroom. The micro particles obtained from the incubation were investigated for antioxidant activities. The results showed that the Cantharellus can grow on the seaweeds waste and produced dense mycelia. Meanwhile, antioxidant assays showed that the total antioxidant capacity and hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity of the micro particles obtained from Cantharellus incubation were significantly higher than those of the seaweeds waste. This is not only the first time to incubate Cantharellus sp. on seaweeds waste, but also the first study involved in antioxidant activities of fermented culture with Cantharellus sp.. It would be a beneficial pathway to recycle seaweeds waste with incubation of Cantharellus to produce potential natural antioxidants.

AbstractAuricularia cornea, jelly mushroom, is a popular ingredient of traditional Chinese cuisine. This study aimed at evaluating the growth, yield, biological efficiency, total phenolic and flavonoid contents, the antioxidant activity, elemental composition, and molecular structure of the wild and domesticated strain Ac24 and the commercially cultivated edible mushroom A. cornea strains Ac1, Ac3 and Ac15. Based on the weight of the fresh fruiting bodies of A. cornea strains, the maximum yield was obtained from commercial strain Ac1 (237.10 g), followed by Ac3 (224.47 g), Ac15 (158 g) and Ac24 (132.37 g), while the biological efficiency range of A. cornea strains was 52.94–94.84%, with significant differences among the A. cornea strains. Our results revealed that Ac24 contained the highest phenolic content (20.10 mg GAE · g−1), while the highest flavonoid content was found in Ac1 (35.13 mg CE · g−1). The maximum mineral contents and the strains were as follows: copper (7.2 mg · kg−1) and zinc (310 mg · kg−1) in Ac1, manganese (788 mg · kg−1) in Ac3 and iron (310 mg · kg−1) in Ac24. DPPH assay found maximum antioxidant activity in Ac24 (IC50 0.233 mg TX · mL−1), FRAP (591 mg TX · g−1) in Ac15, and erythrocyte haemolysis in Ac24. SEM-EDX and FTIR analyses verified the differences among A. cornea strains. The results revealed that wild, domesticated A. cornea strain Ac24 is a promising dietary source of natural antioxidants and is of high nutritional value, compared to commercially cultivated strains.

Pasta was prepared by incorporation of Ocimum sanctum (Basil) for better textural and sensory properties. The pasta was incorporated with the leaf extract of Ocimum sanctum at different concentrations of control, 5, 10, and 15.The natural antioxidants present in the O. sanctum leaf powder that was incorporated in the fruit leather showed extended shelf-life over three months when compared with control, without any added preservative at ambient temperature. Also the nutritional stability of the product was studied under two flexible packages of polypropylene and polyester out of that the products packed in polypropylene showed better storage stability .
