Impact injury to cartilage, a common consequence of joint trauma, is commonly thought to lead to degenerative osteoarthritis. Many pharmacologic agents have been developed to prevent or forestall this process. Development of a reliable model for the early stages of cartilage injury and osteoarthritis would enable the testing of novel treatments that could delay or even reverse the progression of this debilitating disease.

Studying the effect of microwave fields on the intensification of heat and moisture exchange processes in a granular layer is a rather complicated task, which cannot be effectively solved without an adequate research methodology. In presented materials, a system of principles and approaches for studying processes of microwave-convective grain treatment has been discussed. Based on the explicitly defined process target, functional-physical analysis has been performed that made it possible to specify the most essential factors of process. Morphological analysis of processes shall be performed in several stages. At each stage, targets of process have to be set by excluding combinations of factors that have no reason to be considered at this particular stage of process development. Application of mathematical simulation methods is advisable for selection of optimal options.

AbstractA SARS-CoV-2 RBD219-N1C1 (RBD219-N1C1) recombinant protein antigen formulated on Alhydrogel® has recently been shown to elicit a robust neutralizing antibody response against SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus in mice. The antigen has been produced under current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) and is now in clinical testing. Here, we report on process development and scale-up optimization for upstream fermentation and downstream purification of the antigen. This includes production at the 1 and 5 L scale in the yeast, Pichia pastoris, and the comparison of three different chromatographic purification methods. This culminated in the selection of a process to produce RBD219-N1C1 with a yield of >400 mg per liter of fermentation with >92% purity and >39% target product recovery after purification. In addition, we show the results from analytical studies, including SEC-HPLC, DLS, and an ACE2 receptor binding assay that were performed to characterize the purified proteins to select the best purification process. Finally, we propose an optimized upstream fermentation and downstream purification process that generates quality RBD219-N1C1 protein antigen and is fully scalable at a low cost.

With increasing need for electronic systems miniaturization to provide greater functionality in hand-held devices, through-sapphire via paves a way for the greater densification of silicon-on-sapphire devices and systems. Evaluations of two laser systems for via drilling in blank and device sapphire are outlined. Designed experiments were conducted to optimize the process and to minimize sapphire-via parasites (debris and heat-affected zone). Optical and electron microscope observations and measurements were conducted. Effects of varying via drilling techniques were evaluated for via shape and amount of parasitic effects. Laser via-drilling parameters were also evaluated for their effect on via quality. Results of the study show that acceptable through-sapphire via can be achieved and the parasites minimized with the selection of proper equipment and optimization of the drilling process.

AbstractIn this article we study a language contact situation in Majorca, Spain, in which adult monolingual speakers of Spanish who arrived recently in Majorca acquire aspects of Majorcan Catalan prosody. Although the possibility that the adoption of features can take place directly from Catalan is not rejected, we provide evidence that it can be an indirect process, through a process of accommodation (Trudgill 1986; Giles and Coupland 1991) to the L2 variety of Spanish spoken by L1 Majorcan Catalan speakers. An experiment was set up in which we recorded four native Spanish speakers who arrived recently in Majorca holding a semi-directed conversation in Spanish with a native speaker of Majorcan Catalan. The results showed consistent adoption of prosodic features of L2 Majorcan Spanish in interrogative sentences (not in declaratives). The results support the idea that the adoption of prosodic features of Majorcan Catalan by monolingual Spanish speakers can take place in early stages of contact. Our article also shows that subjective factors such as determination towards integration play a fundamental role in determining the degree of accommodation. Finally, salience of prosodic features is claimed to play a role in the selection of transferred features.

Overgeneralization occurs when a child uses the wrong word to name an object and is often observed in the early stages of word learning. We develop a method to elicit overgeneralizations in the laboratory by priming children to say the names of objects perceptually similar to known and unknown target objects. Experiment 1 examined 18 two-year-old children's labelling of familiar and unfamiliar objects, using a name that was previously produced. Experiment 2 compared the labelling of 30 two-year-olds and 39 four-year-olds when presented with completely novel objects. The findings suggest that the retrieved word is a blend of previous activation from the prior retrieval and activation engendered by the similarity of the test object to instances of the target category. We put forward a theoretical account of overgeneralization based on current models of adult language processing. The account suggests a common mechanism of activation and retrieval, which may explain not only momentary lapses in the correct selection of words, but other types of naming errors traditionally thought to reflect differences in children's underlying category representations or, perhaps, gaps in their knowledge of words.

Among practical guides to international investment arbitration, Litigating International Investment Disputes stands out due to both its practitioner-friendly selection of topics and in its approach to discussing the myriad milestones of investment dispute proceedings. The contributing authors underline the strategic importance of making procedural decisions in the early stages of the dispute settlement process and offer concrete suggestions on how to use the special nature of investment arbitration to a client’s advantage. Despite omitting a number of helpful topics, and overburdening some chapters with excessive descriptive detail, Litigating International Investment Disputes should serve as a useful companion tool and reference guide, particularly for the less-seasoned investment arbitration practitioner.
