Summary DBE2 is an information system for the management of biological experiment data from different data domains in a unified and simple way. It provides persistent data storage, worldwide accessibility of the data and the opportunity to load, save, modify, and annotate the data. It is seamlessly integrated in the VANTED system as an add-on, thereby extending the VANTED platform towards data management. DBE2 also utilizes controlled vocabulary from the Ontology Lookup Service to allow the management of terms such as substance names, species names, and measurement units, aiming at an eased data integration.

Web-based applications (Web services and service-oriented architectures) can be run via a Web-based browser. There are several approaches to writing such Web-based applications. A lightweight approach is suitable for hand-held devices. In this approach, a Java servlet or a JSP page (Java 2 Platform, JSP), or an ASP application (Microsoft .NET, ASP) generates HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), XHTML, or XML documents (W3C Semantic Web Activity, XHTML, XML) to be displayed by the browser. Most browsers use an anchored URLs extension (e.g., .doc, .jpg, .xml, etc.) to choose an appropriate plug-in to display the URL when it is clicked. Besides displaying text and multimedia, Web servers and/or browsers can also execute Java applets or scripting languages to read and/or change persistent data. Previously, about 98% of these data were stored in relational or object-relational databases. However, recently more of these data are being stored in XML-based documents. Often these documents have an associated “schema” declaring the nesting of tags and the types of primitive values, or an “ontology” (Everett et al., 2002, Hunter, 2003) declaring classes, attributes, and relations that are used in the document.

Background: Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) commonly affect women in their childbearing years. Vedolizumab (VDZ) is approved for treatment of moderate-to-severe CD and UC, but there is a knowledge gap regarding its use during pregnancy. This targeted literature review describes available evidence on safety of VDZ in pregnant patients in order to offer physicians a detailed and balanced view on persistent data during their decision-making process for an individualized treatment concept. Methods: The search included literature from the MEDLINE database and abstracts of five gastroenterological conferences published until November 2019. Publications were included if pregnancy outcomes in women receiving VDZ or neonatal outcomes in newborns of women previously exposed to VDZ were reported. Results: Out of 196 initially identified records, 18 publications reporting results of five different studies were identified. In total, for 213 of 284 VDZ-exposed documented pregnancies the following pregnancy outcomes were reported: 167 live births (172 infants due to twin births), 1 stillbirth, 35 miscarriages, 10 elective terminations (1 due to detected Down syndrome). Furthermore, during pregnancy, the following complications were observed: seven cases of (pre) eclampsia, three cases of premature rupture of membranes and one case each of placenta previa, chorioamnionitis, pneumonia, first-trimester bleeding, cholestasis, sepsis, or neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage. Based on 172 infants, 30 preterm deliveries (17.4%), 9 cases of low birth weight (5.2%), 5 infections (2.9%), and 6 cases (3.8%) with congenital anomalies were reported. Conclusion: There was no evidence for safety concerns regarding pregnancy outcomes associated with VDZ therapy. Due to the limited scope of included records, further research is needed to understand the safety profile regarding the use of VDZ during pregnancy.

We present a strategy for incrementally migrating legacy systems to object-oriented platforms. The migration process consists of six sequential phases and encompasses reverse engineering and reengineering activities. The aim of reverse engineering is to decompose programs into components implementing the user interface and components implementing application domain objects. The identification of objects is centred around persistent data stores and exploits object-oriented design metrics. Wrapping is the core of the reengineering activities. It makes new systems able to exploit existing resources, thus allowing an incremental and selective replacement of the identified objects. The migration strategy has been defined and experimented within the project ERCOLE (Encapsulation, Reengineering and Coexistence of Object with Legacy) on legacy systems developed in RPG for the IBM AS/400 environment.
