Fiber-metal laminates are hybrid sandwich composite structures made of thin metallic sheets and layers of fiber-reinforced plastics. In this study, for the first time, the effects of polyamide 66 nonwoven interlayers on the tensile, three-point bending, interlaminar shear strength, and low velocity impact responses of fiber-metal laminates are investigated by coupling acoustic emission, thermography, and microscopy techniques. The fiber-metal laminates are interleaved with polyamide 66 nonwoven fabrics at two different areal weight density, namely, 17 gsm (grams per square meter) and 50 gsm. The tensile, bending, interlaminar shear strength, and low velocity impact tests are carried out in accordance with the ASTM standards. During the tensile and flexural tests, acoustic emission data are collected to understand damage types occurring under various loading conditions and, in turn, clearly shed light on the performance of polyamide 66 for interfacial strengthening in fiber-metal laminates. The results of acoustic emission investigation are correlated with the optical and scanning electron microscope-based microscopic analysis. It is shown that the interlaminar shear strength of fiber-metal laminates can be increased significantly (about 42%) by using polyamide 66 nonwoven interlayers. The impacted fiber-metal laminate specimens are examined to determine damage area and length using the lock-in thermography method. It is found that the polyamide 66 interlayers decrease the debonded length and damaged area up to 39 and 32%, respectively. The tensile and flexural strength and modulus of the fiber-metal laminate are not significantly affected by the presence of polyamide 66 interlayers, except a negligible drop in the value of tensile and flexural strength by 6 and 4%, respectively. The polyamide 66 interlayers are proved to be very successful in enhancing plastic deformation ability of the matrix and bonding efficiency between aluminum and composite sections.

This article presents selected aspects of an interlaminar shear strength and failure analysis of hybrid fiber metal laminates (FMLs) consisting of alternating layers of a 2024-T3 aluminium alloy and carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Particular attention is paid to the properties of the hybrid FMLs with an additional interlayer of glass composite at the metal-composite interface. The influence of hygrothermal conditioning, the interlaminar shear strength (short beam shear test), and the failure mode were investigated and discussed. It was found that fiber metal laminates can be classified as a material with significantly less adsorption than in the case of conventional composites. Introducing an additional layer of glass composite at the metal-composite interface and hygrothermal conditioning influence the decrease in the interlaminar shear strength. The major forms of damage to the laminates are delaminations in the layer of the carbon composite, at the metal-composite interface, and delaminations between the layers of glass and carbon composites.

Unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy (UCFRE) is suffering from weak transverse mechanical properties and through-thickness properties. The effect of different amount (0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 phr which is proportional to 0.09, 0.27 and 0.46 wt%, respectively) of multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), on transverse tensile properties, flexural strength, fracture toughness in transverse and longitudinal fiber directions, interlaminar shear strength and lap shear strength of UCFRE has been investigated. Dicyandiamide was used as a thermal curing agent of epoxy resin. MWCNT was dispersed in the epoxy resin by ultrasonic instrument and their dispersion state was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The curing behavior of epoxy resin and its nanocomposites was assessed by differential scanning calorimetry. Results show that transverse tensile strength, modulus and strain-at-break were increased by 28.5%, 25% and 14%, respectively by adding 0.1 phr of MWCNT. Longitudinal flexural properties of UCFRE was not changed by adding different amount of MWCNT. Although longitudinal flexural strength was increased by 5% by adding 0.1 phr of MWCNT. Fracture toughness in transverse and longitudinal fiber directions was increased by 39% and 9%, respectively at 0.3 phr of MWCNT. Results also show that interlaminar shear strength and lap shear strength were increased at 0.3 phr of MWCNT by 8% and 5%, respectively. These increases in mechanical properties were due to the good adhesion of fibers to the matrix, interlocking and toughening action of MWCNT as revealed by SEM.

The γ-ray co-irradiation method was employed to study the effect of diethanolamine modification on the surface of carbon fiber (CF) and the interfacial properties of CF/epoxy composites. Compared with the original carbon fiber, the surface of modified fibers became rougher. The amount of oxygen-containing functional groups was increased and the nitrogen element was detected after irradiation grafting. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of composites reinforced by carbon fibers irradiated in diethanolamine solution was increased and then decreased as the irradiation dose increased. The ILSS of CF/epoxy composites was enhanced by 16.1% at 200kGy dose, compared with that of untreated one. The γ-ray irradiation grafting is expected to be a promising method for the industrialized modification of carbon fibers.
