The purpose of this work was to correlate the effects of thermal aging on the macroscopic properties and microstructural changes for three vulcanized rubber types. The materials were subjected to accelerated thermal aging for periods between 0 and 168 h at 100°C. This aging was evaluated by investigating the mechanical properties and by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman analysis. The results showed that subjecting the materials to thermal aging for a longer time decreased the elongation at break and tear strength and increased the hardness, while tensile strength exhibited different behavior and followed a different trend. The spectroscopy analyses indicated that there is a decrease in the amount of C=C present in the polymer as the aging time increased, which could be identified by the decrease in peak intensity at 1537 and 1600 cm−1 in the FTIR and Raman spectrum, respectively. These results were attributed mainly to an increase in cross-link density, which caused degradation of the material, essentially by a loss of ductility. A good linear relation ( R2 approximately 0.95) between changes in the intensity of FTIR peaks for the C=C signal and changes in elongation at break and hardness was found, concluding that these are good indicators of degradation in elastomers.

The suitability of natural ester oils as an insulating medium in power transformers is discussed in this paper. Owing to environmental concerns, natural ester oils have great potential as mineral oil substitutes in power transformers. In this paper, the aging behaviors of palm and rapeseed natural ester oils were compared with that for mineral oil. The performance of these natural ester oils was assessed based on their properties (moisture content, acidity, and relative content of dissolved decay products) after accelerated thermal aging. The results showed that the palm oil has better performance compared to the rapeseed oil after accelerated thermal aging for 1500 h because of its lower acidity. This was further supported by the presence of sludge in the rapeseed oil after 1500 h of aging.

Nitrogen-doped graphene oxide (GO), namely, NG, was prepared by o-phenylenediamine (OPD) grafting onto GO. The structure and morphology of NG were characterized by FITR, XRD, SEM, EDS, Raman spectroscopy, and TGA. OPD was linked to the GO surface by covalent bonds, and the absorption peak of the C=N bond in the phenazine structure was identified in the FITR spectra. The aging resistance properties of nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR)-NG composites was investigated by mechanical testing, before and after aging. The resistance of the NBR/NG composites with the addition of 3 phr NG fillers was the highest. The aging mechanism was investigated by TGA-DSC, DMA, equilibrium swelling testing, and ATR-FTIR. The results showed that NG could effectively inhibit chain cross-linking in NBR.

The effect of the aging time on the thermal oil aging behavior of hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites under the free or compression state was investigated. The composites aged under the free state and the IRM 903 oil after aging for different time were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The surface morphology of the composites aged under the free state was characterized by microscopic analysis. The thermal stability of the composites aged for different time and the edge and inner samples obtained from the composites aged under the free or compression state were characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis. The effect of aging time on the compressive stress and compressive stain energy density of the compressed composites was investigated. The scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis were exercised to the edge and inner samples obtained from the composites. This research facilitates to discover the heterogeneous aging effect on the degradation behavior of HNBR seals under the compression state in the hot oil environment.
