Since discovery of the Y-Ba-Cu oxide compound showing superconductivity above liquid nitrogen temperature, intensive study has been under way to clarify nature of the high Tc oxides[l-4]. Much efforts were also made in the field of superconductor applications. A number of studies have been carried out by a powder metallurgical process of Y-Ba-Cu oxide compound wires, although, obtained critical current densities were still low at liquid nitrogen temperature[5–6]. Other techniques for wire fabrication is also being attempted[7–9]. In this study, Y-Ba-Cu oxide superconducting composite tapes were prepared by a diffusion process, which is one of the promising methods to obtain a high critical current density.

Since the discovery of high Tc superconducting oxide such as Ln-Ba-Cu-O system which shows superconductivity above liquid nitrogen temperature, intensive study has been carried out to investigate its intrinsic properties[l-4]. Superconducting wire which operates in liquid nitrogen is one of the emerging products among application, however, there are many factors to be investigated for practical use. Critical current density, Jc, is one of the most important characteristics of superconductor, although, only few report describing Jc measurement ever published[5]. In this paper, fabrication procedure of silver sheathed Y-Ba-Cu-O wire by powder metallurgical technique and its superconducting properties have been reported. Other factors which may influence superconductivity such as microstructure of the oxide, configuration of wires, etc. are also discussed.

We have measured the magnetizations and determined the dependence of lower critical magnetic fields on temperature for high Tc Y-Ba-Cu-O Superconductor in liquid nitrogen temperature region. The structure examinations and the measurements of virgin magnetization in small fields show that our samples are made up of granules coupled to each other. Therefore the measured lower critical fields are attributed to the values at which flux enters the granulas.

The integral rotation of the angular distribution of γ rays from the 749 keV level of 51 Cr excited by the (α,n) reaction in Ti5Fe95 and Ti5Ni95 targets has been used to measure the hyperfine magnetic fields at Cr nuclei in these alloys at liquid nitrogen temperature. The values are[Formula: see text]

The magnetic anisotropy of crystals of calcite and sodium nitrate does not alter between room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature. By using such diamagnetic crystals, it is easy to compare strong magnetic fields to 1 part in 1000. The effect is large enough for the measurement of fields of the order of 100 gauss, but in small fields the accuracy is limited by ferromagnetic contamination.

For power applications of HTS it is crucial to predict their AC losses in the typical operating conditions. We report measurements of energy losses in Bi-2223 multifilamentary tapes carrying AC currents and exposed to AC magnetic fields oriented perpendicular or parallel to their wide surface. Losses have been evaluated at liquid nitrogen temperature by transport and magnetisation measurements. The results have been compared to the experimental values obtained by calorimetric method the values estimated by a numerical model specifically developed of evaluation of AC losses in HTS tapes.
