Heavy-fermion compounds are ideally suited to study cooperative phenomena in highly correlated electron systems. We discuss local-moment magnetism and heavy-fermion band magnetism in the exemplary systems CeCu 2 Ge 2 and Ni-rich Ce(Cu 1− x Ni x )2 Ge 2, respectively. In addition, the coexistence of long-range antiferromagnetic order and heavy-fermion superconductivity in UM 2 Al 3 (M: Ni, Pd) will be addressed.

ABSTRACTVanadium oxides are strongly correlated electron systems that are interesting both from a fundamental scientific point of view and for possible future applications including memory and sensors. In this contribution, we report on the epitaxial growth of V2O3 thin films on c-Al2O3 (0001) with molecular beam epitaxy and atomic oxygen. We studied the influence of deposition rate and substrate temperature on the structural properties and the metal-insulator transition.

μSR is one of the experimental techniques used to search for manifestations of the broken [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] symmetries predicted by some theories of highly correlated electron systems. When [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are broken, the screening of the positively charged muon by the electron system generates a magnetic field in addition to any intrinsic magnetic field that may be present. We estimate the magnetic field that is induced at a muon site when the muon is screened by the fractional statistics gas. The value depends on the distance between the muon and the anyon plane, and a simple theoretical approach to the calculation of the minimum energy muon sites is outlined and some results for Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 and YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 are presented.
