Cooperative Cyber-Physical Systems (Co-CPSs) can be enabled using wireless communication technologies, which in principle should address reliability and safety challenges. Safety for Co-CPS enabled by wireless communication technologies is a crucial aspect and requires new dedicated design approaches. In this paper, we provide an overview of five Co-CPS use cases, as introduced in our SafeCOP EU project, and analyze their safety design requirements. Next, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the main existing wireless communication technologies giving details about the protocols developed within particular standardization bodies. We also investigate to what extent they address the non-functional requirements in terms of safety, security and real time, in the different application domains of each use case. Finally, we discuss general recommendations about the use of different wireless communication technologies showing their potentials in the selected real-world use cases. The discussion is provided under consideration in the 5G standardization process within 3GPP, whose current efforts are inline to current gaps in wireless communications protocols for Co-CPSs including many future use cases.

In the future smart factories will satisfy the demand of highly customized products. Stationary and mobile cyber-physical systems (CPS), as part of smart factories will exchange various information. Most of that will happen wirelessly. Out of that reason, a concept for real-time wireless networking of mobile CPS based on LTE is presented in this paper. Through a combination of LTE with GPS and adaptive streaming schemes, a real-time capable wireless communication system seems possible. The paper specifies further the necessary and targeted technical requirements of industrial communication for mobile CPS. It concluded with methods to test, evaluate and validate the communication system.

AbstractModern societies are built on good road infra-structure and efficient transport system. Safety is a high-priority consideration in development of road traffic systems. In recent years the weather information has become becomes very vital for road traffic safety because slippery roads are the key source of road accidents in northern regions of Europe, America and Canada as well. In this article we are presenting the test experiences and pilot road weather related services by executing a set of Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communication scenarios by using IEEE 802.11p and 5G test networks. We have made an effort to evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.11p and 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) 5G test network. We also analyzed the performance of IEEE 802.11p with and without safety feature for secure and reliable vehicular communication. The combination of IEEE 802.11p with 5G test network cellular network makes the traffic system heterogeneous for traffic safety. This heterogeneous system provides the opportunity to exploit the vehicle-based actuators, sensor, and observation data in order to produce the intelligent service platform and up-to-date real time services for vehicles.In this article we have also made a comparison by using an IEEE 802.11p system having safety feature of SafeCOP (Safe Co-operating Cyber-Physical Systems using Wireless Communication) project. SafeCOP is a European project that aims cyber-physical systems-of-systems relying on wireless communication for safe and secure cooperation. This safety feature will help to decrease the amount of road accidents (Car crashes, injuries and fatalities) by offering safe and secure V2V and V2I co-operation. The fundamental advantage of this kind of performance analysis is that the communication between Vehicle-to-Road Weather station (V2RWS) can be exchanged safely and reliably, at the cost of network resources consumed by a safety feature in IEEE 802.11p. It’s clearly presented in this paper, that the use of heterogeneous network and SafeCOP feature for vehicular networking has a clear potential in near future for vehicle’s safety and security of vehicular network.

Abstract The emergence of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) into the Smart Grid applications receiving significant attention by researchers of the Internet of Things (IoT) assisted smart city projects. Communication networks (WiFi/WLAN) is one of the key building blocks of AMI for information exchange. The wireless communication networks are vulnerable to various security threats that lead to problems in designing the AMI system in smart city projects. The main requirements of cyber-physical systems like AMI include confidentiality, integrity, availability, and privacy. To satisfy the requirements of cyber-physical systems, we focused on the wireless communication protocol that addresses data transmission reliability and data security with minimum power consumption and overhead. The Secure and Reliable AMI (SRAMI) protocol using the unique trust-based mechanism for reliability and lightweight cryptography mechanism for the security proposed for Wireless Sensor Network (WSN)-assisted AMI. The trust-based algorithm introduces to establish a reliable data transmission technique among two communicating entities of AMI. In this regard, next-hop selected according to trust-evaluation using parameters energy consumption, geographical distance, and bandwidth availability parameters. Furthermore, the lightweight Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC)-based hybrid technique introduces to satisfy the data integrity and privacy requirements in the AMI network. The performance of SRAMI evaluated using throughput, Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), average energy consumption, delay, and communication overhead compared to state-of-art methods. The throughput and PDR improved by 5 % and 3.14 % compared to existing methods. The energy consumption, delay, and overhead reduced by 7.36 %, 12.16 %, and 17.66 % compared to existing techniques.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) will revolutionize how humans relate with the physical world around us. Many grand challenges await the economically vital domains of transportation, health-care, manufacturing, agriculture, energy, defence, aerospace and buildings. Exploration of these potentialities around space and time would create applications which would affect societal and economic benefit. This paper looks into the concept of emerging Cyber-Physical system, applications and security issues in sustaining development in various economic sectors; outlining a set of strategic Research and Development opportunities that should be accosted, so as to allow upgraded CPS to attain their potential and provide a wide range of societal advantages in the future.
