Two types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), powder and liquid, were added to cementitious composites to build self-sensing concrete. To properly evaluate and quantify the effect of MWCNTs on electrical resistance, various tests, including isothermal conduction calorimetry, were carried out. One of primary issues of self-monitoring concrete is dispersion, so ultrasonication was used to properly mix the CNTs in the dispersion solution, and silica fume was employed to make the specimens. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and porosity analyses were performed to investigate the physical properties of the composites and to confirm uniform dispersion. The distance of the electrical resistance was also measured, and the dosages and types of MWCNTs were analyzed.

The main topic of this paper is the study of polyisoprene-multi wall carbon nanotubes (PiMWCNT) composites electrical conductivity and volatile organic compound sensing properties with respect to type of multi wall carbon nanotubes used. Electrical percolation parameters like percolation threshold and critical exponent of produced composites are determined and analyzed. PiMWCNT composites exhibit a promising sensitivity to the presence of volatile organic compounds. Therefore the composites sensing mechanism of volatile organic compounds are analyzed in more detail by applying an original measuring technique which enables simultaneous measurement of an electrical resistance, mass and length change measurement of the sample in the presence and subsequent absence of a vapour. Measurement results enabled the evaluation of both vapour diffusion behavior in the composite and electrical resistance change mechanism.

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) solutions were deposited on quartz plates by spin coating to yield 2-3 ?m thick PAN films. The films were decomposed at 1000?C in N2 atmosphere into electrically conducting carbonaceous coatings. When the precursor solution contained cobalt (0.2 g Co-acetate per 1 g PAN) and/or multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs, 2 mg MWCNT per 1 g PAN) the specific electrical resistance of the product film dropped from the original 492 ??cm-1 value down to 46 ??cm-1. By excluding all other possibilities we came to the conclusion that the beneficial effect of carbon nanotubes is related to their catalytic action in the final graphitization of condensed nitrogen-containing rings into graphitic nanocrystallites.

AbstractCarbon nanotubes (CNT) are interesting candidates for the reinforcement in robust composites and for conducting fillers in polymers due to their fascinating electronic and mechanical properties. For the first time, we report the incorporation of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) into silica-glass surfaces by means of partial surface-melting caused by a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser. MWNTs were detected being well incorporated in the silica-surface. The composites are characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman-spectroscopy. A model for the composite-formation is proposed based on heatabsorption by MWNTs and a partial melting of the silica-surface.

Background: In this paper, transient two-dimensional laminar boundary layer viscous incompressible free convective flow of water based nanofluid with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) past a moving vertical cylinder with variable surface temperature is studied numerically in the presence of thermal radiation and heat generation. Methods: The prevailing partial differential equations which model the flow with initial and boundary conditions are solved by implicit finite difference method of Crank Nicolson type which is unconditionally stable and convergent. Results: Influence of Grashof number (Gr), nanoparticle volume fraction ( ), heat generation parameter (Q), temperature exponent (m), radiation parameter (N) and time (t) on velocity and temperature profiles are sketched graphically and elaborated comprehensively. Conclusion: Analysis of Nusselt number and Skin friction coefficient are also discussed numerically for both single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs).
