This study evaluates the role of thermomechanical processing and heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a hot rolled, annealed, and aged Fe-18Mn-10Al-0.9C-5Ni (wt%) steel. The steel exhibited rapid age hardening kinetics when aged in the temperature range of 500–600 °C for up to 50 h, which has been shown in other work to be the result of B2 ordering in the ferrite and κ-carbide precipitation within the austenite matrix. The ultimate tensile strength increased from 1120 MPa in the annealed condition to 1230 MPa after 2 h of aging at 570 °C. Charpy V-notch toughness was evaluated at −40 °C in sub-sized specimens with a maximum in the annealed and quenched condition of 28.5 J in the L-T orientation.

Abstract CARLSON ALLOYS C600 AND C600 ESR have excellent mechanical properties from sub-zero to elevated temperatures with excellent resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. It is a solid-solution alloy that can be hardened only by cold working. High strength at temperature is combined with good workability. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: Ni-470. Producer or source: G.O. Carlson Inc.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) present excellent mechanical properties. However, the exploitation of chemical properties of HEAs is far less than that of mechanical properties, which is mainly limited by the low specific surface area of HEAs synthesized by traditional methods. Thus, it is vital to develop new routes to fabricate HEAs with novel three-dimensional structures and a high specific surface area. Herein, we develop a facile approach to fabricate nanoporous noble metal quasi-HEA microspheres by melt-spinning and dealloying. The as-obtained nanoporous Cu30Au23Pt22Pd25 quasi-HEA microspheres present a hierarchical porous structure with a high specific surface area of 69.5 m2/g and a multiphase approximatively componential solid solution characteristic with a broad single-group face-centered cubic XRD pattern, which is different from the traditional single-phase or two-phase solid solution HEAs. To differentiate, these are named quasi-HEAs. The synthetic strategy proposed in this paper opens the door for the synthesis of porous quasi-HEAs related materials, and is expected to promote further applications of quasi-HEAs in various chemical fields.

Microstructure of Al-Cu-Yb and Al-Cu-Gd alloys at casting, hot-rolled -cold-rolled and annealed state were observed; the effect of annealing on the microstructure was studied, as were the mechanical properties and forming properties of the alloys, and the mechanism of action was explored. Analysis of the solidification process showed that the primary Al solidification is followed by the eutectic reaction. The second Al8Cu4Yb and Al8Cu4Gd phases play an important role as recrystallization inhibitor. The Al3Yb or (Al, Cu)17Yb2 phase inclusions are present in the Al-Cu-Yb alloy at the boundary between the eutectic and aluminum dendrites. The recrystallization starting temperature of the alloys is in the range of 250–350 °C after rolling with previous quenching at 590 and 605 °C for Al-Cu-Yb and Al-Cu-Gd, respectively. The hardness and tensile properties of Al-Cu-Yb and Al-Cu-Gd as-rolled alloys are reduced by increasing the annealing temperature and time. The as-rolled alloys have high mechanical properties: YS = 303 MPa, UTS = 327 MPa and El. = 3.2% for Al-Cu-Yb alloy, while YS = 290 MPa, UTS = 315 MPa and El. = 2.1% for Al-Cu-Gd alloy.

Mg alloys with fine mechanical properties and high damping capacities are essential in engineering applications. In this work, Mg–Zn–Y based alloys with lamellar long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases were obtained by different processes. The results show that a more lamellar second phase can be obtained in the samples with more solid solution atoms. The density of the lamellar LPSO phase has an obvious effect on the damping of the magnesium alloy. The compact LPSO phase is not conducive to dislocation damping, but sparse lamellar phases can improve the damping capacity without significantly reducing the mechanical properties. The Mg95.3Zn2Y2.7 alloy with lamellar LPSO phases and ~100 μm grain size exhibited a fine damping property of 0.110 at ε = 10–3.
