The compressive Properties and the effect of anti-damage were studied by means of compression and pre-compression damage tests. The study indicated that:The fracture mechanisms of compression tests were quasi-cleavage fracture attributed to the normal stress and shear stress. Fracture strength, the maximum strain and the fracture energy were reduced in varying degrees, and the damage was intensified while increasing preload value. The mechanical property of the TiAl alloy degrades because of the present of the cracks, and large amount of micro-cracks appear on the surface firstly.

In this study, Ti46Al0.5W0.5Si ingots were directionally solidified by a near-rectangular cold crucible under different process parameters. These process parameters include the electromagnetic stirring, the crucible configuration and the molten drop, all of them have important effect on the S/L interface. The effects of the parameters on the solid/liquid (S/L) interface morphology were investigated, and the mechanisms of the parameters influencing the S/L interface were discussed and revealed. Results showed that the typical S/L interface of the ingots was presented as a curved ‘W-type’ shape. The uneven temperature distribution in the front of the solidified interface is the main reason for a curved S/L interface. Further, the requirements for obtaining a planar S/L interface in the process of cold crucible directional solidification were given, which provided a guide for the future work.

ABSTRACTNew materials with improved high temperature properties are required for higher efficiency gas turbines. One group of alloys which show promise in this area are the eutectic systems Cr-Cr3Si, Nb-Nb3Si, and V-V3Si. Crystals of these refractory metalsilicide eutectics were directionally solidified using Czochralski crystal growth in conjunction with cold crucible levitation melting. The crystals were examined using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In the present paper, these systems are examined with respect to the directionally solidified eutectic microstructures, phase equilibria, crystallography and mechanical properties.
