SNPTRD was planning to employ cold crucible induction heating technique to investigate the corium pool heat transfer, using the UO2 and ZrO2 mixture as the simulated corium pool. Compared with the actual situation, the primary problem of the cold crucible induction heating was the additional introduction of electromagnetic field. To investigate the cold crucible applicability in simulating the corium pool heat transfer, the distribution of joule heat inside cold crucible and the magnitude of electromagnetic force were carried out. To be more suitable for heat transfer test research, the shape of cold crucible was changed to hemisphere, and the cooling water channels were set horizontally. The simulation results indicated that joule heat distribution would be more uniform with lower frequency power but considering power efficiency, there was only one best frequency. The magnitude of electromagnetic force can be ignored compared to the gravity on the natural convection research.

In this study, Ti46Al0.5W0.5Si ingots were directionally solidified by a near-rectangular cold crucible under different process parameters. These process parameters include the electromagnetic stirring, the crucible configuration and the molten drop, all of them have important effect on the S/L interface. The effects of the parameters on the solid/liquid (S/L) interface morphology were investigated, and the mechanisms of the parameters influencing the S/L interface were discussed and revealed. Results showed that the typical S/L interface of the ingots was presented as a curved ‘W-type’ shape. The uneven temperature distribution in the front of the solidified interface is the main reason for a curved S/L interface. Further, the requirements for obtaining a planar S/L interface in the process of cold crucible directional solidification were given, which provided a guide for the future work.

ABSTRACTNew materials with improved high temperature properties are required for higher efficiency gas turbines. One group of alloys which show promise in this area are the eutectic systems Cr-Cr3Si, Nb-Nb3Si, and V-V3Si. Crystals of these refractory metalsilicide eutectics were directionally solidified using Czochralski crystal growth in conjunction with cold crucible levitation melting. The crystals were examined using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In the present paper, these systems are examined with respect to the directionally solidified eutectic microstructures, phase equilibria, crystallography and mechanical properties.
