A C15 Laves phase, HfV2+Nb, shows promising mechanical properties and here we describe the structure of its grain boundaries. The C15 Laves phase has a fcc lattice with a=7.4Å. An alloy of composition Hf14V64Nb22 (including a C15 matrix and a second phase of V-rich bcc solution) was made by arc-melting. The alloy was homogenized at 1200°C for 120h. Preliminary study concentrated on Σ3{<110>/70.53°} grain boundaries in the C15 phase using Philips 400T and CM 30 microscopes. The most-commonly observed morphology of Σ3{<110>/70.53°} grain boundaries in the C15 phase is a faceted boundary. A bright field image (BFI) of the faceted boundary and the corresponding diffraction patterns with the grain boundary edge-on are shown in Fig. 1(a). From the diffraction patterns using a <110> zone axis for both grains, it is obvious that this is a Σ3{<110>/70.53°} grain boundary. Crystallographic analysis shows that the Σ3{<110>/70.53°} grain boundaries selectively facet with the following relationships between the two grains: {111}1//{111}2, {112}1//{112}2, {111}1//{115}2, and {001}1//{221}2.

AbstractWe propose a phase-field theory for enriched continua. To generalize classical phase-field models, we derive the phase-field gradient theory based on balances of microforces, microtorques, and mass. We focus on materials where second gradients of the phase field describe long-range interactions. By considering a nontrivial interaction inside the body, described by a boundary-edge microtraction, we characterize the existence of a hypermicrotraction field, a central aspect of this theory. On surfaces, we define the surface microtraction and the surface-couple microtraction emerging from internal surface interactions. We explicitly account for the lack of smoothness along a curve on surfaces enclosing arbitrary parts of the domain. In these rough areas, internal-edge microtractions appear. We begin our theory by characterizing these tractions. Next, in balancing microforces and microtorques, we arrive at the field equations. Subject to thermodynamic constraints, we develop a general set of constitutive relations for a phase-field model where its free-energy density depends on second gradients of the phase field. A priori, the balance equations are general and independent of constitutive equations, where the thermodynamics constrain the constitutive relations through the free-energy imbalance. To exemplify the usefulness of our theory, we generalize two commonly used phase-field equations. We propose a ‘generalized Swift–Hohenberg equation’—a second-grade phase-field equation—and its conserved version, the ‘generalized phase-field crystal equation’—a conserved second-grade phase-field equation. Furthermore, we derive the configurational fields arising in this theory. We conclude with the presentation of a comprehensive, thermodynamically consistent set of boundary conditions.

AbstractIn this paper, partial inverse problems for the quadratic pencil of Sturm–Liouville operators on a graph with a loop are studied. These problems consist in recovering the pencil coefficients on one edge of the graph (a boundary edge or the loop) from spectral characteristics, while the coefficients on the other edges are known a priori. We obtain uniqueness theorems and constructive solutions for partial inverse problems.

Digital image correlation (DIC) has emerged as a popular full-field surface profiling technique for analyzing both in-plane and out-of-plane dynamic structures. However, conventional DIC-based surface 3D profilometry often yields erroneous contours along surface edges. Boundary edge detection remains one of the key issues in DIC because a discontinuous surface edge cannot be detected due to optical diffraction and height ambiguity. To resolve the ambiguity of edge measurement in optical surface profilometry, this study develops a novel edge detection approach that incorporates a new algorithm using both the boundary subset and corner subset for accurate edge reconstruction. A pre-calibrated gauge block and a circle target were reconstructed to prove the feasibility of the proposed approach. Experiments on industrial objects with various surface reflective characteristics were also conducted. The results showed that the developed method achieved a 15-fold improvement in detection accuracy, with measurement error controlled within 1%.

This paper presents an analytical approach to investigate the nonlinear axisymmetric response of moderately thick FGM sandwich shallow spherical shells resting on elastic foundations, exposed to thermal environments and subjected to uniform external pressure. Material properties are assumed to be temperature independent, and effective properties of FGM layer are graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Formulations are based on first-order shear deformation shell theory taking geometrical nonlinearity, initial geometrical imperfection, Pasternak type elastic foundations and various degree of tangential constraint of boundary edge into consideration. Approximate solutions are assumed to satisfy clamped boundary condition and Galerkin method is applied to derive closed-form expressions of critical buckling loads and nonlinear load-deflection relation. Effects of geometrical parameters, thickness of face sheets, foundation stiffness, imperfection, thermal environments and degree of tangential edge constraints on the nonlinear stability of FGM sandwich shallow spherical shells are analyzed and discussed.

In order to make the contact pressure distribution of polishing wafer surface more uniform during chemical mechanical polishing (CMP), a kind of the bionic polishing pad with sunflower seed pattern has been designed based on phyllotaxis theory, and the contact model and boundary condition of CMP have been established. Using finite element analysis, the contact pressure distributions between the polishing pad and wafer have been obtained when polishing silicon wafer and the effects of the phyllotactic parameter of polishing pad on the contact pressure distribution are found. The results show that the uniformity of the contact pressure distribution can be improved and the singularity of the contact pressure in the boundary edge of polished wafer can be decreased when the reasonable phyllotactic parameters are selected.
