Undoubtedly, carbon-based (nano)composites can be promising photocatalysts with improved photocatalytic activity due to the coupling effect from the incorporation of carbon species. In this mini-review, we focus on the recent development of photocatalysts based on carbon-based (nano)composites. TiO2 is well-known as a typical photocatalyst. Special attention is paid to the various types of carbon–TiO2 composites such as C-doped TiO2, N–C-doped TiO2, metal–C-doped TiO2, and other co-doped C/TiO2 composites. Various synthetic strategies including the solvothermal/hydrothermal method, sol–gel method, and template-directed method are reviewed for the preparation of carbon-based TiO2 composites. C/graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) composites and ternary C-doped composites are also summarized and ascribed to the unique electronic structure of g-C3N4 and the synergistic effect of the ternary interfaces, respectively. In the end, we put forward the future perspective of the photocatalysts containing carbon species based on our knowledge.

The TiO2 and Ag and Zn doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method.The sol-gel method is one of the versatile method to prepare doped and co-doped nanoparticles. sol gel method has emerged as simpler and better option than physical and chemical procedures as it is fast, clean and eco-friendly alternative that does not involve any costly instruments .Synthesis of doped and co-doped nanoparticles having good photocatalytic activity have great potential for the degradation of dye. We have tried to develop new effective antimicrobial reagents with good photocatalytic activities which are not resistant to disease causing microbes.

Co doped TiO2 nanoparticles and thin films were prepared from Ti(OC4H9)4 by sol-gel method. The influence of Co-doping and its content on the crystallite structure and phase composition of TiO2 was systematically investigated by SEM and XRD, the precursor was analysed by TGA. The photocatalytic activity of nanocomposites was investigated in the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange. The results indicated that the inhibitory effect of Co-doping on the phase transformation of TiO2 from anatase to rutile receded obviously when the calcination temperature was changed to 650°C from 550°C. Under the ultraviolet light radiation, the favourite Co-doping concentration was 1% and the obtained Co doped TiO2 thin films exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than nanoparticles and pure TiO2 in the photodegradation of methyl orange.

Pure TiO2 and Fe- and Co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) as photocatalysts were synthesized using wet chemical methods (sol-gel + precipitation). Their crystalline structure and optical properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible light (UV-Vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanoparticles was evaluated through degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) under UV-A and visible-light irradiations. The XRD and Raman analyses revealed that all synthesized nanomaterials showed only the anatase phase. The DRS results showed that the absorption edge was blue-shifted for Fe-doped TiO2 NPs. The decrease in charge recombination was evidenced from the PL investigation for both Co-doped and Fe-doped TiO2 nanomaterials. An enhancement in photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine in aqueous suspension under both UV-A light and visible-light irradiations was observed for Fe-doped Titania NPs by comparison with pure TiO2. These results suggest that the doping cations could suppress the electron/hole recombination. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of TiO2-based nanomaterials was enhanced.

Co-doped TiO2 (0.5-4 mol%) photocatalysts were synthesized via sol-gel method and their physical and chemical properties were investigated. Addition of Co oxide dopant induced anatase to rutile phase transition and reduced the band gap energy of TiO2. The fluorescence result indicated that the electron-hole recombination rate was reduced with the presence of Co oxide dopant. The best photocatalyst obtained was 3Co-TiO2 which enhanced the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 by 12 folds to 26.6%. The importance of fluorescence properties of Co-doped TiO2 towards its photodegradation of Congo Red was presented.
