It is very important that the installed renewable energy system should produce the maximum power outputs with minimum costs, and that can only be achieved with the selection of the best optimization technique applied for the best control strategies along with the introduction of the hybrid energy storage systems (HESS). This chapter presents some optimization techniques applied in control strategies for hybrid energy storage systems in distributed renewable energy systems. The integration of energy production and consumption component through the smart grid concept enables increased demand response and energy efficiency. Hybrid energy storage systems and their applications in the renewable energy systems are extensively discussed besides control strategies involved. The storages systems will play an important role in future related to smart grid.

Hybrid energy systems (HESs) are an excellent solution for electrification of remote rural areas where the grid extension is difficult or not economical. Usually, HES generally integrate one or several renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal with fossil fuel powered diesel/petrol generator to provide electric power where the electricity is either fed directly into the grid or to batteries for energy storage. This chapter presents a review on the solution approaches for determining the HES systems based on various objective functions (e.g. economic, social, technical, environmental and health impact). In order to take account of environmental and health impacts from energy systems, several energy optimization model was developed for minimizing pollution and maximizing the production of renewable energy.

Renewable energy resources are a favorable solution for the coming energy. So, a great interest has been paid in the last decades for developing and utilizing renewable energy resources as wind energy. As it has a large energy contents and, particularize with the availability, but the major problems of it are represented in unmatched with load demand because the intermittency and fluctuation of nature conditions. Many studies focused on the new strategy of using Battery Storage System (BSS), and solving some problems that affect the DC bus voltage and the BSS by using Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC). Their capability is to store energy to realize the objective of time shifting of surplus energy with a high efficiency. The article main objective is to model, simulate, design, and study the performance of a Stand-Alone Wind Energy System with Hybrid Energy Storage (SAWS-HES). Thus, a complete model of the proposed system is implemented including a detailed modeling procedure of the HESS components. In addition to the main contribution, a study of the performance of EDLC only as a storage device that has fast response device integrated to the suggested system then it hybridized with the BSS. The HESS has the capability to compensate the DC bus voltage in the transient conditions and gives good stability for the system. The SAWS-HES utilizes one main renewable energy resource as wind turbine and overall model is employed under MATLAB/Simulink including a developed simple logic controller. The SAWS-HES simulation results presented a promising performance and have a satisfied performance in meeting the end load demands at different operation conditions. This ensures the SAWS-HES reliability and the effectiveness with HES and the controller in stand-alone operation formulating an excellent solution for the renewable energy systems

Abstract Hybrid energy plants, which include both fossil fuel technologies and renewable energy systems, can provide an important step towards a sustainable energy supply. In fact, the hybridization of renewable energy systems with gas turbines which are fed by fossil fuels allows an acceptable compromise, so that high fossil fuel efficiency and high share of renewables can be potentially achieved. Moreover, electrical and thermal energy storage systems increase the flexibility of the energy plant and effectively manage the variability of energy production and demand. This paper investigates the optimal sizing of a hybrid energy plant which combines an industrial gas turbine, renewable energy systems and energy storage technologies. The considered renewable energy system is a photovoltaic system, while the energy storage technologies are electrical energy storage and thermal energy storage. Moreover, a compression chiller and a gas boiler are also considered. For this purpose, the load profiles of electricity, heating and cooling during a whole year are taken into account for the case study of the Campus of the University of Parma (Italy). The sizing optimization problem of the different technologies composing the hybrid energy plant is solved by using a genetic algorithm, with the goal of minimizing primary energy consumption. Moreover, different operation strategies are analyzed and compared so that plant operation is also optimized. The results demonstrate that the optimal sizing of the hybrid energy plant, coupled with the optimized operation strategy, allows high average cogeneration efficiency (up to 84%), thus minimizing primary energy consumption.

<p>To fulfil ambitious targets for reducing CO<sub>2</sub>-emissions in the building sector, the design of new neighbourhoods or the retrofitting of existing buildings requires an increasingly high use of renewable energy (REN). The coupling of heat and electricity in hybrid energy systems hereby plays a key role, as it allows to cover the needs of both sectors using renewable sources. Existing case studies of hybrid energy systems for individual buildings or neighbourhoods are often highly specific to a given location, and it is difficult to draw generalisable conclusions. This work hence aims at the development of a hybrid energy systems model based on large-scale databases of renewable energy potential with high spatial and temporal resolution, in this case for Switzerland. The resulting model may be used to obtain comparable results for case studies across the country or scaled up to the national level. For this, our approach integrates national-scale databases of hourly solar photovoltaic (PV) potential [1] and ground-source heat pump (GSHP) potential [2] for individual buildings with their modelled heat and electricity demand.</p><p>The presented work consists of three steps. First, hourly energy demand for heat and electricity of the residential and service sectors is derived for the entire Swiss building stock. The hourly demand model combines a top-down modelling of annual energy demand with a bottom-up mapping of hourly demand profiles. Second, the energy demand profiles are matched with the renewable energy potentials in hybrid energy systems, at the scale of individual buildings and neighbourhoods. We further add flexibility options to these systems, such as thermal energy storage. Third, the size of the renewable technologies and the storage options are optimised such as to maximise the autonomy level of the resulting hybrid energy systems. The autonomy level is obtained through the modelling of the system dynamics at monthly-mean-hourly temporal resolution, i.e. at hourly resolution for a typical day per month. This reduces the computational complexity of the approach and assures its scalability to the national level.</p><p>The above workflow is tested on a neighbourhood in Geneva, Switzerland, and the resulting optimal system configurations are compared across different building types in the residential and service sector, and for different shares of REN generation. We show how different system configurations, such as the combined use of PV and GSHPs, as well as the addition of flexibility through the use of a thermal energy storage, impact the self-sufficiency and autonomy level of buildings and neighbourhoods. While the presented work focuses on one neighbourhood only, future extensions will aim at applying the model to the Swiss national scale using all data in the national REN databases.
