The Stone-Weierstrass theorem gives very simple necessary and sufficient conditions for a subset A of the algebra of all real-valued continuous functions on the compact Hausdorff space X to generate a subalgebra dense in namely, this is so if and only if the functions of A strongly separate the points of X, in other words given any two distinct points of X there exists a function in A taking different values at these points, and given any point of X there exists a function in A non-zero there. In the case of the algebra of all complex-valued continuous functions on X, the same result holds provided that we consider the subalgebra generated by A together with Ā, the set of complex conjugates of the functions in A.

We consider the weighted Hermite-Fejér interpolation process based on Jacobi nodes for classes of locally continuous functions defined by another Jacobi weight. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the weighted norm boundedness and for the convergence, as well as error estimates of the approximation, are given.

AbstractThe mean value inequality is characteristic for upper semi-continuous functions to be subharmonic. Quasinearly subharmonic functions generalise subharmonic functions. We find the necessary and sufficient conditions under which subsets of balls are big enough for the characterisation of non-negative, quasinearly subharmonic functions by mean value inequalities. Similar result is obtained also for generalised mean value inequalities where, instead of balls, we consider arbitrary bounded sets, which have non-void interiors and instead of the volume of ball some functions depending on the radius of this ball.

In this article, we consider a twisted partial action $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ of a group $G$ on an associative ring $R$ and its associated partial crossed product $R\ast _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}^{w}G$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the commutativity of $R\ast _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}^{w}G$ when the twisted partial action $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ is unital. Moreover, we study necessary and sufficient conditions for the simplicity of $R\ast _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}^{w}G$ in the following cases: (i) $G$ is abelian; (ii) $R$ is maximal commutative in $R\ast _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}^{w}G$; (iii) $C_{R\ast _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}^{w}G}(Z(R))$ is simple; (iv) $G$ is hypercentral. When $R=C_{0}(X)$ is the algebra of continuous functions defined on a locally compact and Hausdorff space $X$, with complex values that vanish at infinity, and $C_{0}(X)\ast _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}G$ is the associated partial skew group ring of a partial action $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ of a topological group $G$ on $C_{0}(X)$, we study the simplicity of $C_{0}(X)\ast _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}G$ by using topological properties of $X$ and the results about the simplicity of $R\ast _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}^{w}G$.

We investigate weightedLpmean convergence of Grünwald interpolation operators based on the zeros of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a general weight and generalizedJacobiweights. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for such convergence for all continuous functions.

LetC(X)be the space of real-valued continuous functions on a Hausdorff completely regular topological spaceX. endowed with the compact-open topology. In this paper necessary and sufficient conditions are given for a subspace ofC(X)to be the range of a pointwise contractive projection inC(X).

AbstractNecessary and sufficient conditions for the incompleteness of exponential system in Cα are characterised, where Cα is the weighted Banach space of complex continuous functions f defined on ℝn with f(t)exp(−α(t)) vanishing at infinity in the uniform norm.
