Background: Benzoxazole, containing a 1,3-oxazole system fused with a benzene ring, has a profound effect on medicinal chemistry research owing to its important pharmacological activities. On the other hand, the benzoxazole derivative has exhibited important properties in material science. Especially in recent years, microwave-assisted synthesis is a technique that can be used to increase diversity and quick research in modern chemistry. The utilization of microwave irradiation is beneficial for the synthesis of benzoxazole in recent years. In this focused review, we provide a metaanalysis of studies on benzoxazole in different reaction conditions, catalysts, and starting materials by microwave technique so far, which is different from conventional heating. Methods: Synthesis of different kind of benzoxazole derivatives have been carried out by microwave irradiation. The most used method to obtain benzoxazoles is the condensation of 2-aminophenol or its derivatives with aldehydes, carboxylic acids, nitriles, isocyanates, and aliphatic amines. Results: Benzoxazole system and its derivatives have exhibited a broad range of pharmacological properties. Thus, many scientists have remarked on the importance of the synthesis of different benzoxazole derivatives. Conventional heating is a relatively inefficient and slow method to convey energy in orientation to the reaction medium. However, the microwave-assisted heating technique is a more effective interior heating by straight coupling of microwave energy with the molecules. Conclusion: In this review, different studies were presented on the recent details accessible in the microwave- assisted techniques on the synthesis of the benzoxazole ring. It presents all examples of such compounds that have been reported from 1996 to the present. Benzoxazoles showed an extensive class of chemical substances not only in pharmaceutical chemistry but also in dyestuff, polymer industries, agrochemical, and optical brighteners. Thus the development of fast and efficient achievement of benzoxazoles with a diversity of substituents in high yield is getting more noteworthy. As shown in this review, microwave-assisted synthesis of benzoxazoles is a very effective and useful technique.

A new and simple method was applied for the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles with an average size of 20 nm. In this microwave-assisted combustion method, glycine as a fuel and zinc nitrate as precursor were used. The final product was obtained very fast with high yield and purity. The synthesized nanoscale ZnO was characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The size and morphology of the ZnO nanoparticles have been determined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. This is a simple and fast method for the preparation of ZnO nanoparticles with no need for expensive materials or complicated treatments.

One-pot efficient protocol to the synthesis of 2-amino-5-oxo-4,5-dihydropyrano(3,2-c)chromene-3-carbonitrile derivatives via condensation of various aryl aldehydes, dicyanomethane and 4-hydroxycoumarin in presence of Emim hydroxide as an excellent homogeneous liquid catalyst. The key advantages of this methodology are mild reaction conditions, novel catalyst, short reaction time, eco-friendly, easy work-up procedure and high yield of isolation of derivatives.

AbstractDihydrochalcones are polyphenols that exhibit a diversity of bioactivities, namely anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiviral. We have explored the synthetic access to such molecular entities, and describe now an easy and scalable approach based on reduction of the olefinic double bond of chalcone precursors via in situ hydrogenation with the system Et3SiH-Pd/C in very high yield. The intermediate chalcones were synthesized also by a simple and efficient microwave-assisted Claisen–Schmidt condensation of aromatic aldehydes with acetophenones, conveniently protected with ethoxymethyl ether, if required. Chalcones were obtained as single reaction product in high yield in 2–3 h, while under conventional conditions at room temperature the reaction was carried out with completion only after 24 h. In addition, microwave irradiation has proven very efficient for deprotection of ethoxymethyl ether with iron chloride in only 10 min and very high yield.

An environmentally benign approach for the synthesis of novel 7-substituted 5-aryl-1H-pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidine-2,4-diones, using mineral supports for their catalytic role and as energy transfer media, is described. The methodology eliminates the usage of solvent during the reaction. The rate enhancement and high yield is attributed to the coupling of solvent-free conditions with microwaves. Further, the role of various supports is studied during the reaction and it is concluded that a MW-assisted basic alumina catalysed reaction is the best in terms of catalysis as well as reaction time and yield.Key words: microwave (MW) irradiation, SBT, pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidines, alumina, environmentally benign.
