An environmentally benign approach for the synthesis of novel 7-substituted 5-aryl-1H-pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidine-2,4-diones, using mineral supports for their catalytic role and as energy transfer media, is described. The methodology eliminates the usage of solvent during the reaction. The rate enhancement and high yield is attributed to the coupling of solvent-free conditions with microwaves. Further, the role of various supports is studied during the reaction and it is concluded that a MW-assisted basic alumina catalysed reaction is the best in terms of catalysis as well as reaction time and yield.Key words: microwave (MW) irradiation, SBT, pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidines, alumina, environmentally benign.

An efficient method for the synthesis of 3-arylidenechroman-4-ones has been developed under solvent free conditions using grinding technique. Grinding of variously substituted chroman-4-ones with aromatic aldehydes in presence of anhydrous barium hydroxide at room temperature give 3-arylidenechroman-4-ones in high yield (75-92%). Products are obtained by just acidification of the reaction mixture in ice cold water. Reaction in solid state, with enhanced rate, high selectivity and manipulative simplicity are the attractive features of this environmentally benign protocol. The chroman-4-one derivatives required for the reaction have been obtained by polyphosphoric acid (PPA) catalysed cyclisation of phenoxypropanoic acids under microwave irradiations.

Microwave-assisted three-component reaction has been established for the synthesis of aryl alkyl ethers. The reaction was carried out under solvent free conditions in the presence of N-methylimidazole and dialkylacetylenedicarboxylate to furnish a novel approach to O-alkylation of phenol derivatives in high yield

Intramolecular Friedel–Crafts acylation of aryl acids is a “green” reaction and environmentally benign, generates some valuable intermediated compounds for pharmaceutical uses. In addition, metal triflates under microwave irradiation are efficient catalysts, solving many problems when using traditional Lewis acids. Gd(OTf)3/[BMI]BF4, a good catalyst for the intramolecular Friedel–Crafts acylation under mild condition with high yield, reduced the reaction time and pollution. Furthermore, Gd(OTf)3 in [BMI]BF4 was easily recovered and reused without significant loss of its activity

A rapid, solvent-free microwave-assisted method has been developed for the synthesis of novel furo quinolines. The title compounds were achieved by the reaction between corresponding 2-hydroxy-3-formyl-quinolines (1a–1c) with chloroacetamide, ethylchloroacetate, and phenacylbromide in specially designed microwave (MW) oven for organic synthesis in unsealed borosil vessel in presence of potassium carbonate. In this method, isolation is accomplished by just treating the reaction mixture with water, and products were obtained in high yield. Hence, this method was found to be very effective and ecofriendly. The structure of the newly synthesized compounds has been evaluated on the basis of analytical, IR, 1H NMR, and mass spectral data.Key words: furoquinoline, microwave irradiation, potassium carbonate, solvent-free conditions.

A new environmentally benign, simple, and efficient protocol for the sulfonylation of amines using microwave irradiation under solvent- & catalyst-free conditions is reported. The corresponding sulfonamides were obtained in excellent yields within short reaction times.

We report, for the first time, new insights into the nature of the band gap of CuGeO3 (CGO) nanocrystals synthesized from a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method in the presence of citrate. To the best of our knowledge, this synthetic approach has the shortest reaction time and it works at the lowest temperatures reported in the literature for the preparation of these materials. The influence of the surfactant on the structural, electronic, optical, and photocatalytic properties of CGO nanocrystals is discussed by a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches, and that results elucidates the nature of the band gap of synthetized CGO nanocrystals. We believe that this particular strategy is one of the most critical parameters for the development of innovative applications and that result could shed some light on the emerging material design with entirely new properties.
