The creation of a hierarchical interface between the carbon fiber (CF) and the epoxy resin matrix of fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites has become an effective strategy for introducing multifunctional properties. Although the efficacy of many hierarchical interfaces has been established in lab-scale, their production is not amenable to high-volume, continuous, cost effective fiber production, which is required for the large-scale commercialization of composites. This work investigates the use of commercially available CO2 laser as a means of nano-structuring the surface of carbon fiber (CF) tows in an incessant throughput procedure. Even though the single carbon fiber tensile strength measurements showed a decrease up to 68% for the exposed CFs, the electrical conductivity exhibited an increment up to 18.4%. Furthermore, results on laminates comprised of irradiated unidirectional CF cloth, demonstrated an enhancement in out of plane electrical conductivity up to 43%, while preserved the Mode-I interlaminar fracture toughness of the composite, showing the potential for multifunctionality. This work indicates that the laser-induced graphitization of the CF surface can act as an interface for fast and cost-effective manufacturing of multifunctional CFRP composite materials.

This paper presents an experimental investigation into the effects of the application of carbon nanotube (CNT) based nanopolymer, and thin film buckypaper, to the interface of stiffened carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite joints. Bonded CFRP composite T-joints, were manufactured with dispersed CNT epoxy nanopolymer mixture, and buckypaper films, applied at the joint interface, and tested under pull-off loading. The presence of the nanomaterial at the interface causes a localized out-of-plane reinforcement, which resists pull-off loads, leading to superior performance compared to composite bonded joints without nano-reinforcements, however, the introduction of substantial voids, in the case of the buckypaper samples, lead to faster structural failure. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used to map the strain contours of the T-joint specimen during testing, which revealed damage initiation and hot-spot zones. Fluorescent optical microscopy of the joint sections was also performed to investigate these hot-spot zones and damage initiation areas, at the mesoscale, to study the possible causal mechanisms of the failure process in the tested composite bonded joints.

Carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites a perfect structural material due to their outstanding malleable strength, great rigidity, light mass and pronounced thermal resistance. But their inferior out-of-plane properties which are controlled by the matrix–fibre interface restrict the use of CFRP composites in critical applications. Amalgamation of nanofiller in the CFRP composites has found to improve the matrix-fibre interface and there by out-of-plane response. Though matrix modification has contributed to the improvement of interface, fibre modification has a scope for higher levels of nanofiller incorporation and proper fibre nanofiller adhesion. Out of several methods available for fibre modification electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is an eye-catching method for monitoring as well for nanofiller deposition. In recent ages, Graphene has grabbed wonderful consideration Among the graphene based functionalised nanofillers Carboxyl functionalized Graphene (G-COOH) modified CFRP composites have shown better ILSS properties. This research primarily aims to fabricate a CFRP composite using G-COOH modified carbon fibres with varying nanofiller concentrations of 0.5g/ltr, 1g/ltr and 1.5g/ltr in the EPD bath and its impact on the mechanical properties of the FRP composites. The laminates thus obtained were subjected to short beam shear test for the determination of inter laminar shear strength (ILSS). Fractography of the tested samples to observe various failure modes has been carried out by using scanning electron microscope (SEM).
