Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή ερευνά την δυναμική σχέση μεταξύ των αγορών κρατικών ομολόγων και των αντίστοιχων ασφαλίστρων ανταλλαγής πιστωτικού κινδύνου (Credit Default Swaps – CDS) των υπερχρεωμένων χωρών του Ευρωπαϊκού νότου. Εξετάζεται τόσο η βραχυχρόνια όσο και η μακροχρόνια σχέση μεταξύ των περιθωρίων (spreads) των κρατικών ομολόγων της Ελλάδος, της Ισπανίας, της Ιταλίας και της Πορτογαλίας, και των spreads των αντίστοιχων CDS. Συνολικά, μελετούμε την περίοδο από τον Ιανουάριο του 2006 ως τον Φεβρουάριο του 2015, κατά την διάρκεια της οποίας η παγκόσμια χρηματοοικονομική κρίση μετασχηματίστηκε σε κρίση κρατικού χρέους στην Ευρωζώνη, έχοντας ως σκοπό να απαντήσουμε στο ερώτημα: ποια αγορά κατέχει την ηγετική θέση στην διαδικασία προσδιορισμού της αγοραίας τιμής (price discovery) του πιστωτικού περιθωρίου (credit spread). Ειδικότερα, αντιμετωπίζεται το ζήτημα της σχετικής αποτελεσματικότητας των αγορών ομολόγων και CDS αναφορικά με την τιμολόγηση του κρατικού πιστωτικού κινδύνου. Ήτοι, εάν ο πιστωτικός κίνδυνος αντανακλάται πρώτα στα spreads των ομολόγων ή σε αυτά των CDS. Με άλλα λόγια, κατά πόσο μία αύξηση των spreads των ομολόγων μπορεί να έχει ως αποτέλεσμα την αύξηση των spreads των αντίστοιχων CDS, ή το αντίστροφο. Επιπροσθέτως, επιχειρούμε να ερευνήσουμε τα πρότυπα μεταβολής της διαδικασίας του price discovery στο χρόνο, εφαρμόζοντας μία δυναμική οικονομετρική μεθοδολογία. Η δυναμική αυτή προσέγγιση μας επιτρέπει, αφενός να ανιχνεύσουμε πιθανές εναλλαγές στην κατεύθυνση επιρροής της μίας αγοράς από την άλλη, και αφετέρου να συνδέσουμε τις εναλλαγές αυτές με συγκεκριμένα γεγονότα της Ευρωπαϊκής κρίσης χρέους, τα οποία ενδέχεται να έχουν επηρεάσει τις αντιλήψεις των αγορών σχετικά με τον κρατικό πιστωτικό κίνδυνο όπως αυτός αποτυπώνεται στα credit spreads.Σύμφωνα με τα εμπειρικά ευρήματα της παρούσας διατριβής, συμπεραίνουμε ότι κατά τη διάρκεια περιόδων αυξημένης αβεβαιότητας και οικονομικών αναταραχών, τουλάχιστον στην Ελλάδα, στην Ισπανία και στην Πορτογαλία, η αγορά των CDS αντικατοπτρίζει πρώτη τις νέες πληροφορίες σχετικά με τον κρατικό πιστωτικό κίνδυνο. Κατά συνέπεια, μια αύξηση των spreads των CDS δύναται να προκαλέσει την αύξηση του κρατικού κόστους δανεισμού. Επιπλέον, η δυναμική προσέγγιση η οποία ακολουθήθηκε δείχνει πως η διαδικασία του price discovery μεταβάλλεται στο χρόνο, παρουσιάζοντας συχνές εναλλαγές σε ότι αφορά την αγορά οδηγό. Η κατεύθυνση επιρροής από την αγορά ομολόγων προς την αγορά των CDS, και αντιστρόφως, εξαρτάται από τα χρηματοοικονομικά χαρακτηριστικά και τις συνθήκες του οικονομικού περιβάλλοντος της εκάστοτε χρονικής περιόδου. Ειδικότερα, διαπιστώνουμε ότι σε περιόδους οικονομικών αναταραχών και χρηματοοικονομικής ασφυξίας η αγορά των CDS οδηγεί την αγορά των υποκείμενων ομολόγων κατά την διαδικασία του price discovery, ενσωματώνοντας πιο γρήγορα και πιο αποτελεσματικά από την ομολογιακή αγορά τις νέες πληροφορίες αναφορικά με τον κρατικό πιστωτικό κίνδυνο. Ως εκ τούτου, τα spreads των CDS αντανακλούν με μεγαλύτερη ακρίβεια, από τα spreads των ομολόγων, τις αντιλήψεις των αγορών αναφορικά με τον κρατικό πιστωτικό κίνδυνο.

This paper studies international sovereign Credit Default Swaps (CDS) market focusing attention to the CDS of Central and East Europe. The main purpose of the study was to perform detail analysis of Lithuanian CDS in the global capital market. We compared the CDS markets of other countries and found some commonalities between them. We study the credit curve produced by CDS and volatility of CDS. A great attention is paid to investigate the relationship of CDS and the government bond market. Analysis of finding a leading role of CDS and the bond markets in the price discovering process is made. A leading market for different periods is found by using the Vector Error Correction model. Our main finding is that during the volatile period price discovery takes place in the bond market and in the calm period price discovery is observed in the CDS market. Disclosed relationship between CDS spreads and Eurobonds yield risk premium gives an additional decision making tool for sovereign debt managers.

This study provides a dynamic analysis of the lead-lag relationship between sovereign Credit Default Swap (CDS) and bond spreads of the highly indebted southern European countries, considering an extensive time sample from the period before the global financial crisis to the latest developments of the sovereign indebtedness in the euro area. We employ an integrated price discovery methodology on a rolling sample, with the intention to shed light on whether the CDS spreads can trigger rises in bond spreads, and the relative efficiency of credit risk pricing in the CDS and bond markets. In addition, we attempt to depict the evolution of the price discovery process regarding the direction of influence from one market to the other. The rolling window analysis verifies that the price discovery process evolves over time, presenting frequent alternations concerning the leading market. We find that during periods of economic turbulence the CDS market leads the bond market in price discovery, incorporating the new information about sovereign credit risk faster and more efficiently than the bond market does. This regularity should be seriously considered by private and public participants as they make investment and funding decisions. Therefore, the motivation of our paper is to identify the dominant market in terms of price discovery during a period of economic turmoil and, thus, to provide insights for decision making to investment bodies and central governments.
