The interactions between free surface waves and layers of cohesive sediments including wave height attenuation and mud movement are of great importance in coastal and marine engineering. In this study, the results from a new analytical model were compared with those from literature experimental works and analytical models in terms of wave height dissipation rate and mud velocity. It was found that the new model provided good agreements in the case of coexisting waves and currents, while the literature model of Ng (explained in Section 2 of the text) —assuming the mud layer as a highly viscous layer with high shear rates—matched well with the experimental data for high viscosity (mud viscosity, νm = O [0.01 m2/s]). In addition, it was found that the new model is able to successfully simulate particles velocity in the presence of co-current.

Analytical models are presented to predict the internal vessel conditions during the decompression regimes of an initially saturated liquid. A subcooled blowdown analysis considers the elasticity of both the liquid and vessel. A bubble growth analysis for the intermediate period of blowdown is based on thermally dominated bubble growth from a solid surface into a superheated liquid. A dispersed analysis for the latter decompression period assumes the vapor bubbles have grown sufficiently so the liquid is uniformly distributed within the vapor phase. The sub-cooled analysis predicts the initial period of blowdown reasonably well. The bubble growth analysis predicts the rise in system pressure above that value to which it initially falls after the end of subcooled blowdown. It considers an initially “slow” depressurization rate (less than 400 MPa/s) where nucleation and bubble growth is the dominate volume producing, and thus pressure recovery, mechanism. It provides insight into why the system pressure initially drops below the saturation pressure, and it also offers an explanation for the subsequent recovery of the system pressure toward the saturation pressure. The thermodynamic equilibrium analysis provides a reasonable prediction of the latter stage of decompression. The combination of these three models predicts the overall two-phase decompression phenomenon reasonably well.

Acoustic radiation force (ARF) creep imaging applies step ARF excitation to induce creep displacement of soft tissue, and the corresponding time-dependent responses are used to estimate soft tissue viscoelasticity or its contrast. Single degree of freedom (SDF) and homogeneous analytical models have been used to characterize soft tissue viscoelasticity in ARF creep imaging. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fundamental limitations of the commonly used SDF and homogeneous assumptions in ARF creep imaging. In this paper, finite element (FE) models are developed to simulate the dynamic behavior of viscoelastic soft tissue subjected to step ARF. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous models are studied with different soft tissue viscoelasticity and ARF configurations. The results indicate that the SDF model can provide good estimations for homogeneous soft tissue with high viscosity, but exhibits poor performance for low viscosity soft tissue. In addition, a smaller focal region of the ARF is desirable to reduce the estimation error with the SDF models. For heterogeneous media, the responses of the focal region are highly affected by the local heterogeneity, which results in deterioration of the effectiveness of the SDF and homogeneous simplifications.

The growth of a spherical bubble in a viscous, incompressible fluid due to a transient tension is analyzed. The maximum attainable radius of the bubble is derived. The problem is closely related to the experimental study of cavitation inception by the stress wave technique. The analysis reveals clearly the role played by the viscosity and shows that for liquids of high viscosity the stress wave technique can be employed advantageously to determine the average sizes of the nuclei of cavitation.

Microwave cutting glass and ceramics based on thermal controlled fracture method has gained much attention recently for its advantages in lower energy-consumption and higher efficiency than conventional processing method. However, the irregular crack-propagation is problematic in this procedure, which hinders the industrial application of this advanced technology. In this study, the irregular crack-propagation is summarized as the unstable propagation in the initial stage, the deviated propagation in the middle stage, and the non-penetrating propagation in the end segment based on experimental work. Method for predicting the unstable propagation in the initial stage has been developed by combining analytical models with thermal-fracture simulation. Experimental results show good agreement with the prediction results, and the relative deviation between them can be <5% in cutting of some ceramics. The mechanism of deviated propagation and the non-penetrating propagation have been revealed by simulation and theoretical analysis. Since this study provides effective methods to predict unstable crack-propagation in the initial stage and understand the irregular propagation mechanism in the whole crack-propagation stage in microwave cutting ceramics, it is of great significance to the industrial application of thermal controlled fracture method for cutting ceramic materials using microwave.

This paper discusses the need for nationally based analytical models of the medieval period. The use of cluster analysis as a method for classifying demesne farms, by the crops they grew and their livestock management, is explained. Successful implementation of cluster analysis requires both the existence of a large base sample, to permit isolation of specific groupings within the data, and access to considerable processing time. The paper concludes by demonstrating how discriminant analysis can provide an efficient and systematic way of classifying even a single manor within a national frame of reference.
