<i>Pyrenophora tritici</i>-<i>repentis</i>, causal agent of tan spot, is one of the most important wheat leaf spot pathogens worldwide. The race structure of <i>P. tritici</i>-<i>repentis</i> isolates obtained from wheat (except one from noncereal grass species) in the Czech Republic was studied. The 86 monosporic isolates of <i>P. tritici</i>-<i>repentis</i> originated from different parts of the Czech Republic were grouped into five known races based on necrosis/chlorosis induction on standard differentials (Katepwa, Glenlea, 6B365, Salamouni). The isolates recovered from wheat were races 1, 2 and 4. Race 1 was the most frequent (50%), races 2 and 4 were found rarely (3% and 5% respectively). The isolate of <i>P. tritici</i>-<i>repentis</i> recovered from noncereal grass species was determined as race 4 which seems to be typical for noncereal hosts. The reaction of 30 isolates (42%) was difficult to be compared to reactions of so far identified <i>P. tritici</i>-<i>repentis</i> races. They have to be tested again on additional wheat genotypes.

In the period 2009&ndash;2011 monitoring of the incidence of phoma stem canker was carried out at selected sites of the Czech Republic (&Scaron;umperk and Opava regions in North Moravia). The risk of infection was evaluated by assessing the autumn release of&nbsp;Leptosphaeria&nbsp;spp. ascospores and with the proPlant prediction model. In recent years, the incidence of phoma stem canker has been relatively low and this corresponded with the total count of ascospores released in the autumn period but not with an increased level of infection risk announced by the proPlant model. During the monitored period the ascospore concentration reached maximally 2 ascospores/1 m<sup>3</sup>&nbsp;per day. Maximum ascospore release was recorded in 2010 as a result of favourable weather conditions. The first incidence of phoma leaf spot has been observed in mid-October. The higher values of ascospores concentration were recorded in the Opava region, but the total number of the trapped ascospores was more often higher in the &Scaron;umperk region.&nbsp;

This is the first report of&nbsp;Puccinia oxalidis&nbsp;causing leaf spot diseases on ornamental&nbsp;Oxalis triangularis&nbsp;subsp.&nbsp;papilionaceae&nbsp;cv. Atropurpurea in Moravia, Czech Republic. The macroscopic symptoms and microscopic features are described.

In 2001&ndash;2004 virulence of the wheat leaf rust population in the Czech Republic was studied on Thatcher near-isogenic lines with Lr1, Lr2a, Lr2b, Lr2c, Lr3a, Lr9, Lr10, Lr11, Lr15, Lr17, Lr19, Lr21, Lr23, Lr24, Lr26 and Lr28. Samples of leaf rust (180 in total) were obtained from different parts of the Czech Republic. Resistance genes Lr9 and Lr19 were effective to all tested isolates like in the previous years. Unlike the previous years virulence on Lr24 and Lr28 was observed. Relatively effective were also Lr1, Lr2a, Lr24, Lr28 and Lr2b. Other Lr genes were defeated by the majority of the tested samples. Our results transformed to the numbers of physiologic races indicate that race 61SaBa prevailed like in the previous years, followed by races 61, 2, 12SaBa, 2SaBa, 14, 77SaBa, 12, 57, 6, 53, 53SaBa, 77, and 14SaBa. Twenty-one winter wheat cultivars registered in 2001&ndash;2004 were tested with 8 leaf rust isolates. Out of them 15 showed resistance at least to one rust isolate. High resistance recorded in field trials for cvs Batis and Ilias, which were susceptible to all tested rust isolates at the seedling stage, demonstrates the importance of field (partial) resistance. &nbsp;

Reactions of winter triticale cultivars mostly from central Europe to recent and old leaf rust isolates were tested in the greenhouse. In one trial 20 cultivars were tested with 8 leaf rust isolates, collected recently from official wheat and triticale trials in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In another trial 15 cultivars were tested with 6 old leaf rust isolates, used to identify leaf rust resistance genes in wheat. The cultivars Cando, Hortenso and Tricolor, registered in the Czech Republic, were resistant to the majority of the recent isolates. The Hungarian cultivar Tatra was resistant to all the recent isolates. The old leaf rust isolates were virulent only to a few of the triticale cultivars. Randomly selected isolates from wheat and triticale were tested on triticale cultivars and on Thatcher near isogenic lines with different Lr genes. On average, leaf rust isolates from triticale were virulent to a higher number of triticale cultivars than isolates collected from wheat and vice versa.

The technical report presents a summary of results obtained in the leaf rust race surveys carried out in Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic in the years 1966&ndash;2001. The physiologic races were determined using the standard differentials Malakoff (Lr1), Carina (Lr2b), Brevit (Lr2c), Webster (Lr2a), Loros (Lr2c), Mediterranean (Lr3), Hussar (Lr11), Democrat (Lr3) and the additional differential Salzm&uuml;nder Bartweizen (Lr26). Races 14, 77, 61, 53 and&nbsp;2&nbsp; successively dominated in the given period. They mostly appeared in two variants, avirulent and virulent to Lr26. Genes for virulence in the leaf rust races were compared with genes for resistance in the registered wheat cultivars listed in the report. Most frequent were the genes Lr3 and Lr26.

A downy mildew was observed on <I>Buddleja × weyeriana</I> Weyer ex Rehd. (<I>B. davidii × globosa</I>) cv. Sungold in a nursery in the northern part of the Czech Republic in July 2008. This downy mildew disease of <I>Buddleja</I> (Butterfly Bush) had been unknown in the country so far. Characteristics of visual symptoms and microscopic features are described. The morphology of the fungus was typical for <I>Peronospora hariotii</I>, conforming to the published description by GÄUMANN (1919). The sexual stage was not found. This is the first report of <I>Peronospora hariotii </I>causing leaf spot disease on <I>Buddleja</I> in the Czech Republic.

Apricot pseudo-chlorotic leaf spot virus (APCLSV) is a novel, still poorly known Trichovirus in the family Betaflexiviridae. It is most closely related to Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) (2,4) and infects stone fruit trees of the Prunus genus. Its presence has so far been detected in apricot, plum, Japanese plum, and peach trees in Italy, Spain, France, Hungary, Turkey, Jordan, and Australia (1,2,4). During the summers of 2008 and 2010, leaf samples of old Czech local plum cultivars were obtained from the Holovousy collection and assessed for the presence of viruses belonging to the Capillovirus, Trichovirus, and Foveavirus genera using the polyvalent degenerate oligonucleotides (PDO) nested reverse transcription (RT)-PCR test (3). Following amplification from total RNAs extracts, the amplicons were cloned and several clones were sequenced for each plant sample. In plum (Prunus domestica) cv. Babce, a mixture of amplicons was observed and BlastN and BlastX analyses of the obtained sequences revealed the presence of ACLSV and APCLSV. The 310-bp APCLSV amplicon (GenBank Accession No. JN790294) showed highest identity (82.9% in nucleotide sequence and 97.1% in amino acid sequence) with the Sus2 isolate of APCLSV (4) and clustered with APCLSV isolates in a phylogenetic analysis. APCLSV infection was further confirmed with an APCLSV-specific RT-PCR assay (4), which yielded a product of the expected 205-bp size (GenBank Accession No. JN653070) with closest homology again to the Sus2 APCLSV isolate (83.4 and 94.3% nucleotide and amino acid identity, respectively). To our knowledge, this finding represents the first detection of APCLSV in domestic plums in the Czech Republic, extending our vision of APCLSV diversity and its geographic distribution. For unknown reasons, APCLSV has almost always been reported in mixed infection with ACLSV (1,2,4) and the situation in cv. Babce does not deviate from this trend. This has greatly hindered the analysis of the pathogenicity of APCLSV, a situation further complicated in the current case because the Babce cultivar was also infected by Plum pox virus. The fungus Ramularia collo-cygni is increasingly important as the causal agent of Ramularia leaf spot (RLS), a novel leaf spot disease of barley. The work aimed to identify gene resources suitable for developing new breeding lines of winter barley with improved resistance. During the first experimental period (2001&ndash;2005), RLS incidence was monitored in 711 cultivars and advanced breeding lines. Differences were detected in the intensity of symptomatic expression, but no material showed high resistance. During the second experimental period (2006&ndash;2009), response to natural RLS infection was evaluated in 19 winter barley cultivars (12 six-row and 7 two-row) registered in the Czech Republic. Highest susceptibility was detected in 6-row cvs. Luran, Laverda and Wendy while cvs Breunskylie (2-row), Merlot and Highlight (both 6-row) showed relatively lower disease incidence. High resistance was not detected. On average, 2-row cultivars showed lower intensity than 6-row cultivars and significant variation was observed among years.

In the spring of 2008, leaf spot was observed on <I>Rhododendron hippophaeoides</I> and <I>Rhododendron obtusum</I>; the causal agent was identified as the rust <I>Chrysomyxa rhododendri</I>. The rust occurs primarily in mountain regions and in the Czech Republic was first observed 105 years ago. In the present study we describe pathogen morphology and symptoms on the two new host species.
