A technique for the determination of tannin content in traditional Chinese medicine injections (TCMI) was developed based on ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy. Chemometrics were used to construct a mathematical model of absorption spectrum and tannin reference content of Danshen and Guanxinning injections, and the model was verified and applied. The results showed that the established UV-based spectral partial least squares regression (PLS) tannin content model performed well with a correlation coefficient ([Formula: see text]) of 0.952, root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) of 0.476[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/ml, root mean square error of validation (RMSEV) of 1.171[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/ml, and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.465[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/ml. Pattern recognition models using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and [Formula: see text] nearest neighbor ([Formula: see text]-NN) classifiers based on UV spectrum could successfully classify different types of injections and different manufacturers. The established method to measure tannin content based on UV spectroscopy is simple, rapid and reliable and provides technical support for quality control of tannin in Chinese medicine injections.

An analysis of a relationship between fire resistance limits scatter for steel structures coated with intumescent fire retardant coating and an appropriate interval of thicknesses of the coating was carried out. A methodology for the determination of this relationship was proposed. This methodology was tested on a practical example. A steel structure with a reduced thickness of 6 mm was considered. A typical dependence of the required thickness of the structure was taken into account. A ratio of a mean square deviation of the fire resistance limit to this limit was accepted to be equal 0.1. Using these values an appropriated interval of the thicknesses of the intumescent fire retardant coating was determined. This interval can be calculated for any given confidence level. Boundaries of this interval can be not symmetric in relation to the value of the normative thickness of the fire retardant coating. The proposed methodology can be used for the determination of the required thicknesses of the intumescent fire retardant coatings on steel structures for the given r value, reduced thickness of the structure and the confidence level.

To evaluate the application of ultraviolet spectroscopy for the rapid determination of aesculin, aesculetin and fraxetin inCortex fraxiniextract solutions, ultraviolet spectra ofCortex fraxiniextract solutions from different batches were collected in the spectral range from 200 nm to 400 nm. The relationship between ultraviolet spectra and chemical parameters displayed some non-linear characteristics. Thus, K-OPLS was proposed to establish the calibration models for the determination ofCortex fraxiniextract solutions between the reference data and ultraviolet spectra. The calibration results were achieved for the determination ofCortex fraxiniextract solutions. The coefficients of determination in calibration (R2) for aesculin, aesculetin and fraxetin were 0.989, 0.957 and 0.939, while in prediction (R2) were 0.982, 0.979 and 0.962, respectively. And the root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP) for aesculin, aesculet and fraxetin were 11.99, 3.02 and 1.59 μg/mL. The results demonstrated that ultraviolet spectroscopy could be used for the rapid determination of these three components inCortex fraxiniextract solutions.

Abstract This study introduces a reliable method to detect adulteration of spirit drinks. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence in combination with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and partial least squares (PLS) regression was used to determine the content of water and ethanol in adulterated fruit spirit samples. EEM fluorescence spectra recorded in the emission wavelength range of 315–450 nm and in the excitation wavelength range of 240–305 nm were used for PARAFAC. The model created using PARAFAC-PLS was able to predict the water and ethanol level in adulterated apple spirit with the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) values of 1.9 % and 1.8 %, respectively. Regarding adulterated plum spirit, the RMSEP values of 0.7 % and 3.5 % were obtained for water and ethanol, respectively. The aim of this work was to determine whether EEM-PARAFAC can be used to distinguish between plum and apple spirit. Better results were obtained for apple spirit and the method is useful also for water-apple spirit blends.
