Considering economics and environmental sustainability, recycling of critical metals from end-of-life devices should be a priority. In this work the hydrometallurgical treatment of a spent automotive catalytic converter (SACC) using HCl with CaCl2 as a leaching medium, and solvent extraction (SX) with a thiodiglycolamide derivative, is reported. The aim was to develop a leaching scheme allowing high Pt recoveries and minimizing Al dissolution, facilitating the application of SX. The replacement of part of HCl by CaCl2 in the leaching step is viable, without compromising Pt recovery (in the range 75–85%), as found for the mixture 2 M CaCl2 + 8 M HCl when compared to 11.6 M HCl. All leaching media showed good potential to recover Ce, particularly for higher reaction times and temperatures. Regarding SX, results achieved with a model solution were promising, but SX for Pt separation from the real SACC solution did not work as expected. For the adopted experimental conditions, the tested thiodiglycolamide derivative in toluene revealed a very good loading performance for both Pt and Fe, but Fe removal and Pt stripping from the organic phases after contact with the SACC solution were not successfully accomplished. Hence, the reutilization of the organic solvent needs improvement.

Zinc silicate-based (Zn2SiO4:Eu3+) long afterglow phosphors were produced by solid state reaction method. The effects of borax and Eu2O3 additive on the properties of fabricated products have been studied. The results show that, there is not much difference in phase compositions within the borax additive amount; however, their SEM morphologies are different. Borax additive can increase the grain size of the product. Some sintering phenomena could be observed in the sample with Eu2O3 addition. The fluorescence spectroscopy results indicate that, the emission peak of the sample with Eu3+ additive located at 612nm, which may be a good candidate for red phosphor applications. The luminescent mechanism of Zn2SiO4:Eu3+ is also discussed.

Two Alternatives

An economic analysis has been made of a hypothetical 30,000-dwt tanker operated in continuous, clean service. Under the premise that the ship will continue to operate throughout her remaining book-life in predominantly clean service, two alternatives are considered. Alternative I: Conventional corrosion policy is continued. Annual shipyard repair, including steel renewals and maintenance are performed to the extent required. Alternative II: The required steel renewals are made at the end of the fifth year of service and all tanks are coated with a zinc silicate coating. Annual shipyard repairs and maintenance are subsequently performed to the extent required. In general, the methods consisted of (a) generating steel-renewal requirements by appropriate simulations for the 20 years' book-life of the vessel, and (b) conducting economic analyses of alternatives I and II for comparison. The results of this study indicate that coating the tanks in accordance with alternative II represents a net saving of $998,301 by the end of the vessel's book-life. The payout time on the coating investment was found to be 6.6 years with an average, annual return on the coating investment of 21.9 percent.
