A highly improved methodology for the direct amidation of carboxylic acids with amines using silica gel as a solid support and catalyst is described. Several examples using aliphatic, aromatic, unsaturated and fatty acids combined with primary and secondary amines are shown.

Two storage disorders, "pink white" and "pasty yolk" are known to develop in eggs from hens with cyclopropene fatty acids (e.g. malvalic and sterculic acid) in their diet. The pink white condition is related to increased diffusion processes in the egg during storage. The pasty yolk condition is related to an increase in the proportion of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids in the yolk. The change in texture becomes evident during storage at normal temperature, but can be induced quickly in any affected egg, even when new-laid, by low temperature. The present investigations were carried out to see if the development of these defects could be related to any structural differences detectable in eggs from hens fed a cyclopropene compound.

Disparlure, (cis-7,8-epoxy-2-methyloctadecane) the sex attractant of the gypsy moth, Porthetria (Lymantria) dispar, attracts the male nun moth, Lymantria monacha, in the field and is a highly effective olfactory stimulus in electroantennogram (EAG) and single-cell recordings. We have now analyzed the extract of 2000 abdominal tips of the female nun moth. Physical and chemical tests, which included gas-chromatographic retention times, elution volumes from silica gel and silica gel-silver nitrate columns, mass spectra, epoxide functionality, EAG-activity of chromatographic fractions with gypsy moth antennae, presence of disparlure precursor, all indicated that disparlure is present in the extract of nun moth sex glands. The optical activity of the natural disparlure of the two species has not yet been determined. Several authors have reported 1-0 that disparlure,

Column chromatography of the acetone extract of the lichen Cladina macaronesica (Sephadex LH-20, silica gel and silver nitrate-im pregnated silica gel) afforded eight triterpenes identified by chemical and spectral m eans. α-Amyrenone, lupenone, taraxerol, taraxerone and /so-arborinol acetate were isolated for the first time from lichens and (-)-usnic acid and five mononuclear phenolic compounds were also obtained, four for the first time as natural products. The possible transformation of perlatolic acid into these phenolic compounds is briefly outlined.
