Abstract Artificial neural networks [ANNs] are an effective method for predicting and classifying variables. This article presents the application of an integrated system based on artificial neural networks and calculations by the finite element method [FEM] for the optimization of geometry of a thin-walled element of an air structure. To ensure optimal structure, the structure’s geometry was modified by creating side holes and ribs, also with holes. The main criterion of optimization was to reduce the structure’s weight at the lowest possible deformation of the tested object. The numerical tests concerned a fragment of an elevator used in the “Bryza” aircraft. The tests were conducted for networks with radial basis functions [RBF] and multilayer perceptrons [MLP]. The calculations described in the paper are an attempt at testing the FEM - ANN system with respect to design optimization.

In this paper thin-walled part deformation during finishing turning process caused by gripping force of hydraulic lathe chuck was investigated. Bearing ring was taken as an example of thin-walled part undergo finishing turning operation. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used to define the deformation of examined part. The aim of presented research was to compare the deformation of bearing ring caused by gripping force of hydraulic 3-jaw chuck and 6-jaw chuck for different values of total gripping force. The data obtained from conducted simulations allowed to evaluate the influence of gripping force on machining part deformation which is directly related with its geometrical accuracy.

A typical ground imitating tank is analyzed regarding it as the thin-walled structure composed of plates (skins) and beams (reinforcement) using finite element method (FEM). Through moving the location of reinforcements, make the skins close with the flanges of the reinforcements in order to imitate actually the connection of the skins and the reinforcements. The thickness of plates, the size and the geometry shape and the location of reinforcements are taken as parameters to be optimized. In calculation, not only consider effects of the oil-weight, the extra-pressure in tank and the dead weight of the tank on the stresses and displacements of the tank, but also analyze the effects of the inertia forces produced due to the rotation of the tank on the stresses and displacements. Displacement, stress and deformation distributions of the ground imitating tank under the three typical flying postures imitated are given.

According to the technical problems such as low stiffness vibration and dimension error in milling Ti6Al4V thin-walled component, the manufacturing with paraffin reinforcement is studied. Firstly, paraffin formula for milling thin-walled component is researched. Secondly, applying the finite element method (FEM) to predict the deformation of machining with paraffin reinforcement and the corresponding milling experiments is done to check the the validity of the model. Finally, the influences of machining accuracy about different paraffin formulas for the same component are obtained. This study supplies support for the research of paraffin formula which are based on reducing the distortion of workpiece.
