The specific features of the structural organization of biofilms formed with the participation of Legionella in the water supply systems of health care facilities (HCF) and in the water-cooling towers of industrial enterprises in the Moscow Region were studied to elaborate new approaches to preventing legionellosis in the potentially dangerous water systems. A massive Legionella biofilm in association with other gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria was shown to form for 2-3 weeks on the protective antibacterial filters built in the hot water supply systems of the risk-group units of HCFs. The specific features of the structural organization of biofilms of Legionella onto surface of water-cooling towers, which were a set of a few systematic groups of microorganisms, such as fungi, gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and cyanobacteriae located in the presence of a matrix and metal inclusions. The results confirm that it is necessary to destruct and prevent the formation of natural Legionella biofilms in the potentially dangerous water systems, which is an essential component of the current strategy for the prevention of legionellosis.

The main performance indicators of a water supply system include the quality and safety of water, continuous work, relevant pressure and small water loss. The majority of foreign and local projects on reducing water loss have been carried out in the water supply systems of metropolitans; however, the specificity of small settlements differs from that of big cities. Differences can be observed not only in the development of infrastructure and technical indicators but also in the features of water consumption. The article presents the analysis of water loss formation and describes reduction measures in a small settlement. The conducted research defines that water loss in big cities is much smaller than that in small settlements. The major part of water used in small settlements is applied for agrarian purposes rather than for domestic needs. It has been found that water is employed for the irrigation of plants and livestock watering, which often is not accounted. Research also shows that slight (<0.2 m³/h) physical water loss (holes in the network) that occur in small settlements may compose up to 30% of all water supplied to the water network. Pagrindiniai vandens tiekimo sistemos efektyvumo rodikliai yra šie: vandens saugumas ir kokybė, nepertraukiamas darbas, tinkamas slėgis ir maži vandens nuostoliai. Absoliuti dauguma užsienio ir šalies vandens nuostolių mažinimo projektų buvo atlikta didmiesčių vandentiekiuose, tačiau mažų gyvenviečių specifika gerokai skiriasi nuo didžiųjų miestų. Skiriasi ne tik infrastruktūros lygis, techniniai rodikliai, bet ir vandens vartojimo ypatumai. Straipsnyje analizuojami vandens nuostolių susidarymas ir galimi mažinimo būdai mažose gyvenvietėse. Nustatyta, kad rajono centruose susidarantys vandens nuostoliai yra gerokai mažesni nei mažose gyvenvietėse. Didžioji dalis gyvenvietėse vartojamo vandens skirta augalams laistyti ir gyvuliams girdyti, o ne gyventojų buitiniams poreikiams tenkinti. Nustatyta, kad vanduo, naudojamas laistyti ir gyvuliams girdyti, dažnai nėra įtraukiamas į apskaitą. Nustatyta, kad mažų gyvenviečių vandentiekio tinkle susidarantys maži (<0,2 m³/h) fiziniai nuostoliai (pvz., dėl skylių tinkle), gali sudaryti daugiau nei 30 % viso į tinklą tiekiamo vandens kiekio.

AbstractChironomid midges have been known to include parthenogenetic species for over a century. One of these species, Paratanytarsus grimmii (Schneider), cited under several different names here shown to be junior synonyms, has attained some notoriety as a pest. Its occurrence as a supposedly paedogenetic (actually pharate adult parthenogenetic) inhabitant of water distribution systems is discussed and related to its more usual occurrence in a variety of small water bodies including aquaria. New synonymy is proposed and a lectotype designated.

In this article, the necessity of integrated approach to the analysis and solution of problems of safety of water supply and wastewater treatment are declared. The paper presents the results of the determination of heavy metals in drinking water samples from centralized water supply systems and wells of individual water supply of the Sverdlovsk region. It was found that the content of copper ions in the samples does not exceed its maximum permissible concentration, and the content of lead and cadmium ions in most samples is higher than the permissible norms. It is established that water samples from Nizhny Tagil and Serov are more contaminated with cadmium. The causes of drinking water pollution are discussed. It was found that the pollution of water from the centralized water supply systems with heavy metals is mainly due to the non-compliance of the operated water pipes with sanitary and hygienic requirements. Groundwater pollution is caused by the infiltration of industrial effluents containing heavy metals from storage and sedimentation tanks through soil. It is shown that numerous industrial enterprises in the Sverdlovsk region aggravate the process of pollution of surface and groundwater with heavy metals. The unsatisfactory quality of water in terms of the content of heavy metals in Sverdlovsk region is revealed. The authors dwell on the need to continue research to determine the content of other heavy metals in water and expand the geography of sampling in the region in order to assess more accurately the quality of water.

In order to improve the economic performance of the company, the establishment of rational water use schemes and the reduction of the use of fresh water obtained from water supply systems or natural bodies of water can become an important factor. Water-cooling circulating systems, where cooling towers are used as cooling facilities, are the basis of rational water use systems. In water recycling systems that need stable water cooling at high specific hydraulic and thermal loads, cooling towers are used. By spraying water with nozzles or irrigation devices, the surface of water needed to cool it by contact with air is formed. A cooling tower is a heat exchange device for removing heat from various production processes to the environment by evaporating part of the water passing through it. The share of evaporated water usually does not exceed 1.5 %. Most of the cooling towers used were built 30 - 50 years ago. Almost all of these installations are morally and physically outdated. To consider the main criteria that should be guided with the choice of method for reconstruction of cooling towers to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their operation.
